    Rita Reys

Who is she? I came across a Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers session with her on vocals. I have never heard of her before.
  2. How good is this? Is it worth picking up?
  3. I think the late Bill Miner once told me that he had a list, or more properly, a looseleaf book on every broadcast tape that Boris Rose had. How he got that from Rose I don't know. I would easily say that if any broadcast emanated from 'Birdland' and perhaps several other clubs e.g., the 'Royal Roost', 'Cafe Bohemia', etc., from the late '40s through the mid '50s, Rose was quite likely to have it. So while I can't just cough up the names of artists at will, many of the great names as well as lesser ones are represented in those tapes. Hopefully they don't belong to the ages and one day they will surface on some lable.
  4. Marty, what else did he have besides Mingus?
  5. Horace Silver at the Blue Note, May 5th 2004. That band cooked.
  6. That one sold for $400? Wow, I have 3, I should sell 2 of them.
  7. I came across this photo of 'The Crocodile Hunter' holding his baby under his arm while teasing a crocodile. It's just as stupid as Michael Jackson holding is baby over a balcony. Has anyone seen this before?
  8. Man, I only figured out 3 of these from disc 1, 13, 15, and 16.
  9. Yeah, I wish I could find that cylinder and once and for all prove Bolden created jazz. Bunk Johnson supposedly had the cylinder, at least that's what I read once.
  10. What would you consider the most extraordinary piece of music in your wads of albums, CD's, and tapes? Something that you're sure almost no one else knows about. I stumbled across this person who followed around jazz artists in the 60’s and 70’s. He befriended just about all he told me about. They even let him record the shows. He has a stash of private recordings; in fact he gave me copies of some, which he had to have transferred from tape because they started to deteriorate. I have a Sonny Stitt one that just blows me away. I listen to that at least once a week. The music is brilliant despite the sound dropouts from its age.
  11. For all the musicians on this board, how many standards or jazz tunes can you play without the sheet music? When I was playing, I learnt to play abot 300 within a 6 to 8 month time frame. Before that I could play them if the sheet music was in front of me.
  12. How many of us, when the birthday of an artist that has left us, pull out the stash of CD by the artist and play them in remembrance? To whom do you do this for? My list is, 1) Wes Montgomery 2) John Coltrane 3) Sonny Stitt 4) Joe Henderson the 5th will be Jimmy Smith. I would do it for Bird, but WKCR does such a great job of this, that I just tune into them. I also caught last year's Coltrane memorial on WKCR. I will just most likely blast the radio for him from now on.
  13. Just wondering for those that have the Verve discography, are there any unreleased session listed in there?
  14. Those are my least listened to Wes albums. I know he was out to make money to feed his family at that time, by crossing over to reach a larger audience. I can dig Tiquila, Califorina Dreaming and the other albums around that time on Verve and A&M, but the magic was gone when he did Road Song. His playing didn't do much for me on those 2 albums. I think Wes was the greatest guitarist that ever picked up the instrument across all styles of music. Remember, it just about two days from his 80th birthday. I will be spinning his entire output to celebrate his life and music.
  15. That burger us almost as big as this guy.
  16. Yes, those are on the complete Riverside box.
  17. Excuse my ignorance, but do they still make the B3 anymore?
  18. I hope it was a good one.
  19. You can still come here. Then I can catch you at Smokes or the Vanguard groovin' away on stage.
  20. I spoke with someone at eBay and was told to forward the email to that very same address. I just wanted to make others aware just incase they answer the email. It looked so official.
  21. There is a Ebay scam going around to anyone that has bought on eBay. The scam asked for you to update your personal information, including your credit card number. Failing to do so will remove your eBay account. It llok very offical. I called eBay was told there is a major scam happening. Yahoo talkes about here. http://news.yahoo.com/fc?tmpl=fc&cid=34&in..._Internet_Fraud
  22. Thanks, I must pick it up.
  23. All the best.
  24. Isn't Groove Brother's The Montgomery Brothers in Canada?
