  1. Walter was a wonderful spirit and I wish for more too. So, which ones do you have? Just Davis Cup and stuff with him as a sideman. Art Blakey and the Jazz messengers
  2. What label was this session originally on? Allmusic lists it as being Blue Note.
  3. I know he is teaching or was teaching jazz at NYU, but does he still play or record? I haven't heard anything about him in such a long time.
  4. Do you think if record companies would market jazz like they do top 40 music, jazz would sell just as well? Or Does jazz require one to think too much for the average person and it would never work marketing it like top 40?
  5. So labels like Prestige and Blue Note didn't care so much for the sound quality, it was a union thing?
  6. The melody for “Salt Peanuts” was taken (stolen) directly from a Louie Armstrong solo. Don’t remember the tune though. I don’t think Dizzy was stealing, but more of admiration for Armstrong.
  7. Yeah, that's with today’s technology. As the years went on, the amount of time of a side seemed to increase.
  8. During the days of LP's 50's and 60's, what was the maximum amount of music you could squeeze on a side? Looking at my CD's from Blue Note, Prestige and other labels, the longest one I saw so far was about 46 minutes, minus the alt takes and stuff.
  9. I wish there were more recordings by Walter Davis, JR. I was watching yesterday the "One Night at Blue Note show" and now listening to "Davis Cup". I like his playing.
  10. During the 50's and 60's, does anyone know what piano Rudy had in his studio? I doubt artists brought their own pianos to the sessions.
  11. Women just don't understand our addiction to jazz and music in general. If I had a shoe addiction, my wife would be hunting and shopping with me.
  12. The hunt has begun of the Harp Seals in upper Canada. It makes me sick to consider myself part of the human race when you see the slaughter. http://www.hsus.org/20535
  13. i've looked at the latest edition of the penguin guide and can't locate this assertion. where did you find it? I posted a thread on a article about Coltrane's home on Long Island. Can't find it now. I called it "a nice story". In the article it mentions it. Look under the artists threads.
  14. Can we search back to day one. I've only been here since Jan of 2004. How long has this board been around?
  15. With the MZ-r*, you can record live jazz shows. Not that I have ever done this.
  16. I wonder if you misunderstood him. I've never heard of any of the modern archtop luthiers using rosewood for any body parts (of course it's long been used for fingerboards and bridges). Maybe he was talking about flattops (as Zizala suggested). If he was actually talking about archtops, that would be pretty unusual. The great Jimmy D'Aquisto (legendary apprentice of John D'Angelico) once stated that rosewood "does not belong anywhere on a guitar"... No, he's not using rosewood today, but was using it years ago. Maybe he made a mistake and ment something else.
  17. I've been doing it for years. It makes the day go by faster and more fun, especially when surrounded by a cubical.
  18. Can it be oneself, or does it have to be someone other then that?
  19. Al, if you plan to Horace Silver, either call the Blue Note to hold seats for you. To get good seats, get their by 7 PM for the 8 PM show. 9 for the 10 PM show. I would even consider ording tickets on line. He is going to sell out all shows.
  20. This is all you need to get around the city. http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct/maps/submap.htm
  21. Just stay away from those double decker tour buses. They steel your money and are not that safe.
  22. On Saturday May First Jimmy Heath will be conducting a class at the Blue Note. It's at 2PM.
  23. Juinor Cook and Blue Mitchell
  24. Wayne is still on the top of his game. Should be a great show.
