  1. I have a friend that started listening and buying jazz. I lent him John Coltrane's "Giant Steps". At first he couldn't get into it. I told him, listen to it a few more times. He gave it back to me this morning. He said it grew on him and that would be the next CD he is going to buy. Now would "A Love Supreme" be too much for a newbie to understand? How far along does it take to fully understand a piece of work like Trane's "A Love Supreme." He saw me listening to it this morning. He wanted to check it out. I said it might turn you off to Coltrane. This piece is his signature work, and very model.
  2. I was listening to Grant Green's Standards this morning. The back of the CD case states , "The slight phasing effect on the cymbals on serveral performances is derived from an azimuth problem which occurred in the 1980 tape transfer of this sessions." Now, I really can't say I hear anything that I shouldn't hear from the cymbals. Anyone know where I should be listening for this?
  3. This has been reissued already? I thought it wasn't coming out thill the end of April.
  4. Right Now,, 53F going to 85 F and Sunny.
  5. Wow, sad to hear he didn't have it. He's one of the great trumpet players in the 50 through the 70's. "Getting old sucks!" I saw Clark Terry in December, and those were his words.
  6. This pesrson sang on some of Horace Silver's records in the 80's.
  7. It is easy getting up there and playing, but you also then have to market yourself. Is this the hardest part of being a musician?
  8. I would love more Larry Young and Duke Pearson as well.
  9. Any good dry red wines for about $15?
  10. The vocal person not the group.
  11. Anyone know something about this artist?
  12. Walter was a wonderful spirit and I wish for more too. So, which ones do you have? Just Davis Cup and stuff with him as a sideman. Art Blakey and the Jazz messengers
  13. What label was this session originally on? Allmusic lists it as being Blue Note.
  14. I know he is teaching or was teaching jazz at NYU, but does he still play or record? I haven't heard anything about him in such a long time.
  15. Do you think if record companies would market jazz like they do top 40 music, jazz would sell just as well? Or Does jazz require one to think too much for the average person and it would never work marketing it like top 40?
  16. So labels like Prestige and Blue Note didn't care so much for the sound quality, it was a union thing?
  17. The melody for “Salt Peanuts” was taken (stolen) directly from a Louie Armstrong solo. Don’t remember the tune though. I don’t think Dizzy was stealing, but more of admiration for Armstrong.
  18. Yeah, that's with today’s technology. As the years went on, the amount of time of a side seemed to increase.
  19. During the days of LP's 50's and 60's, what was the maximum amount of music you could squeeze on a side? Looking at my CD's from Blue Note, Prestige and other labels, the longest one I saw so far was about 46 minutes, minus the alt takes and stuff.
  20. I wish there were more recordings by Walter Davis, JR. I was watching yesterday the "One Night at Blue Note show" and now listening to "Davis Cup". I like his playing.
  21. During the 50's and 60's, does anyone know what piano Rudy had in his studio? I doubt artists brought their own pianos to the sessions.
  22. Women just don't understand our addiction to jazz and music in general. If I had a shoe addiction, my wife would be hunting and shopping with me.
  23. The hunt has begun of the Harp Seals in upper Canada. It makes me sick to consider myself part of the human race when you see the slaughter. http://www.hsus.org/20535
  24. i've looked at the latest edition of the penguin guide and can't locate this assertion. where did you find it? I posted a thread on a article about Coltrane's home on Long Island. Can't find it now. I called it "a nice story". In the article it mentions it. Look under the artists threads.
