  1. I've tried to Jackie McLean 3 times in the past. Each time he has canceled. Hopefully his health is better. Plus the fact that the weather will be warmer maybe he'll play the shows.
  2. What set these two great bands apart were the vocalists. Both band had great soloists throughout their years, but Basie always had great vocalists in his band. Joe Williams, Billy Eckstine, Jimmy Rushing and Sarah Vaughan, just to name some. Any great vocalists come out of Ellington’s band?
  3. Does a tune become a standard after it has been recorded by many different artists, or is there a different formula for a tune becoming a standard?
  4. Welcome Paco.
  5. I agree 100%. But I happen to have both versions of Green Streets and I can hear a difference. I was pulled towards the RVG version.
  6. This weekend I was watching the Blues Brothers on cable. Cab Calloway Preformed is signature song, “Minnie the Moocher”. Now do you feel Calloway was more of a showman or a jazz performer? I not that fluent with his music other then a handful of tunes I've heard.
  7. I was playing Grant Greens' Green Streets, both the Conn and the RVG versions. I have to say, the RVG is so much better in my mind. This got me wondering, which engineer do others prefer? I find a warmer sound with the RVG's, especially the JRVG's.
  8. See Horace Silver at the end of April. He hardly tours and plays live anymore. He's a the Blue Note.
  9. I've used a Sony Mini-disc. You can find them on E-bay. In fact the one I bought is also great for recording live music. I've done it at 2 recent shows. If this is the route you go, MZ-R*
  10. How to stop buying CD', try LP's instead. Start listening to music you don't like and this will prevent you from wanting to listen to music for a while. I don't know of any real way. Buying jazz CD's is like a heroin fix for me. But the high doesn't last that long, and then I need more.
  11. Mule, I really enjoyed reading this.
  12. That same dog is outside eating crap in the street. Plus, did you ever get a whiff of a dog's breath? It sure smell as if he was just licking his ass. How could it possibly be cleaner? Unless someone is licking his own ass.
  13. Jim Hall. I am finding his playing as too simple for my ears.
  14. I seem to buy almost all my jazz pior to the 1970's. There is so much great music that I don't have from that time alone, that I concentrate my buying almost entirely on the 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's. I would have to say pre 1970's makes up 97% of my music.
  15. Is it solely for the art of creating music as you go, or, money isn’t everything when it comes to art? What make you want to play jazz? I know I did it because I found it hard at first, but then it became an intellectual thing as I got good at it I wanted to play harder pieces and write my own stuff.
  16. Around 9 years ago Chuck held a class at the Learnig Annex in NYC. The class was on how to break into the music business. Bassically he said, stay away if you want to play jazz. You'll be bumming around for money to eat. He did say there was room for musicians that wanted to play the style of music he was doing in the 70's and 80's. I don't really believe there isn't any room for striaght ahead jazz music.
  17. What about John Stein? Anyone heard some of his stuff? I heard him today and like the way he plays. But that was just his cover of Grant Green's Green Street.
  18. The first that comes to mind is Bird and Diz. Then Staryhorn and Ellington. Any others you can think of?
  19. Welcome. Looking forward to your posts.
  20. Anyone here collect posters from jazz shows? If so, what gems to you have?
  21. Who uses them? I have had my share of fake books. You know, the ones sold under the table.
  22. Which Jazz artists that have had success crossing over? It think it would have to be George Benson. Any others come to mind?
  23. I was having this very dscussion with someone at work today. He stopped by my desk since he knows I listen to jazz and ofter play CD's while I work. He showed my a copy of Chuck Mangione's greatest hits and said, "now this is jazz." I guess you can say it is jazz to extent, but he's not someone I'd run out to buy or see.
  24. I've done the emusic thing when it was unlimmited as well as bought CD's each month. As Vibes said, after awhile too many CD bought at one time makes it hard to real enjoy music. Plus living in NY everything else is expensive so you have to limit youe spending. March, I bought 5 CD's. This month so far just one. Maybe 1 one this month. Less new stuff means a better understanding of the music you already own.
  25. There's a new rock band called "The Motherfuckers" Their one album is called "We're Fucked".
