  1. I'm afraid I didn't get there either. In Walt Dickerson news, I was able to contact Dmitry. He'll try to contact Walt and will get back to me.

  5. Are you sure that isn't a Motherwell?
  6. Dennis Overbye – Einstein in Love: A Scientific Romance
  7. Alan, thx for the info. I didn't know about the Kimmel center gig by Jamal. I'm way out of circulation at the moment, due to family needs. If you think of it, drop me an email if you see Jamal will be playing live again in the area. ← Your wish is my command. Announced today: Friday, October 21 | 8pm SUNNY MURRAY FACTOR with Khan Jamal, vibraphone Sabir Mateen, saxophone Odean Pope, saxophone Ed Crockett, bass Sunny Murray, drums Community Education Center (CEC) Theater, 3500 Lancaster Avenue | Philadelphia $12 General Admission | All ages

  10. Speaking of Roth, I read his "The Plot Against America" earlier this year -- pretty good.
  11. Is Dmitry still watching the board? If you still have his contact information, please let me know and I'll pass it along.
  12. Michael Wex - Born to Kvetch: Yiddish Language and Culture in All Its Moods (St Martin's Press)
  13. Thanks, Philly guys. Be good to get together before or after a show or elsewhen.
  14. I thought I mentioned Walt to Mark a while ago, glad to hear Mark's interested now. He'd be perfect for the series at Houston Hall at Penn. Now I just have to remember where his contact information is...
  15. The Eddie Condon and Edmund Hall are now pre-listed on CD Universe as well.
  16. I don't think I know all of them. One requirement was a non-smoking environment, which eliminates him from most of the clubs. (Unless and until a smoking ban is enacted in Philly.) He may have wanted vibes provided. I don't know his monetary requirement. I think I pased his name along to a booker who does some more avant garde things, but don't think anything developed. Maybe I'll try to ask some of the other musicians in his area for ideas.
  17. I notice that CD Universe has it for $16.98. ← Thanks. Great news that this is back out, even though it might have been better to reissue the CD on its own as well. Even better news that CD Universe has it, since I think I need to order a few more things from them to get my karma back in balance (I got the Cellar Door at the low price). ← I hope that your karma isn't the source of the delay in the Cellar Door set. (If it is, you better make a large order!)
  18. Did I mention that when they rebuilt my computer after a disk problem, I lost all my email? But I'm just glad that I don't have a dog or a pickup truck. If I did, the dog would die and the truck would break down. And then I'd be in a country song.
  19. Thanks, guys!
  20. I notice that CD Universe has it for $16.98.
  21. To tell the truth, the last six months have been fairly challenging, the last three especially so, which partly explains why I haven't posted this Summer. The biggest loss was my mother, who passed away a month ago at the age of 83 in Phoenix. She had been in remission from breast cancer for over six years, but about two years ago the cancer came back as bone cancer. She'd actually been doing well for a couple years, keeping it at bay with medication, raising her spirits by going to a support group, doing artwork and exercise at a senior center and staying active with friends. But this Spring the medicine was no longer effective. She tried some chemo, but the didn't help and just made her feel ill. I was able to visit her twice the Summer, the second time with my older daughter. I admire her strength and dignity in her fight -- she called hospice on her own in July and when she knew she didn't want to be by herself in her condo and found an assisted living place and moved herself in. Luckilly, she didn't have any pain, just weakness. Her mind was not effected and she was alert until the day before her last. In between all that, I've had a few other distractions as well: my company sold one of their lines of business and also outsourced their IT department on 4/1 (but it wasn't an April fools joke). I was carried along to the outsourcing company, where my job has pretty much been the same, with the addition of new projects to move our data center and change our processes. My two daughters are having troubles at school -- my younger daughter has trouble getting up and out for school; my older daughter, a senior, hasn't been completing any of her assignments, it isn't clear why. (Anxiety? Perfectionism? Obviously, this is not a good omen for graduating, let alone college.) And my wife moved out of the house over 18 months ago, and I decided it was finally time to call a lawyer. And one of my cats was mauled by a dog this summer and tore out all his back claws trying to escape. He's doing OK now. On the plus side, I filed my federal taxes on Friday, after two extensions. Other than that, things seem fine.
  22. A mouse was playing hide and seek with two of my cats in the backyard yesterday. (Well, from the cats' viewpoint anyway.) But of course, mice are one thing and Rats are another.
  23. Since I, alas, don't have the Mosaic set, I'm thinking about picking up this set. Anyone with the Mosaic want to comment on these sessions?
  24. Khan Jamal still lives here and is active. He had around a half dozen gigs in the area this year. (Including a free one last week at the Kimmel Center.) He's also done some recording for CIMP. (Plug: see phillyjazz.Jazzmatazz.info.) Walt Dickerson is living with his son in the suburbs. He's still practicing. I think he'd like to play. I've passed his name along, but he may not have found any place that meets his requirements.
