  2. This is fantastic news! I've been hoping for the live Vanguard material to come out on CD for a long time. " Stepping Stones: Live at the Village Vanguard" is currently due out on Columbia/Legacy on 7/26.
  3. All that I know is that you don't have to be a genius to know that you shouldn't let Ray Charles drive!
  4. How many producers of the national media know who Dave Burrell is, let alone put him on the air for half an hour to talk and play? (He was on yesterday's Fresh Air.)

  6. Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.
  7. Would he consider adding several of the unissued tracks to the 1958-62 Selects that he's planning?

  9. I found an answer to my own question: "Eugene the Jeep" is a character that E.C. Segar added to Thimble Theatre on 3/3/1936. Could Hodges's nickname been derived from the Popeye character?
  10. Wasn't Jeep also originally character in Thimble Theater (AKA "Popeye") ?
  11. Here's a map of the neighboorhood: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=West+Somerse...,0.014594&hl=en The Stadium was between Somerset & Lehigh, 20th & 21st. The block the stadium is on had a large church built on it several years ago. I pass the site often on the train. Here's a satellite image taken within the last few years: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Lehigh+Ave++...07918&t=k&hl=en The church has a blue roof. The building in the lower left is a high school. The Septa (formerly Penn Central) R8 train tracks are on the lower right.
  12. Where was it located in Philly?
  13. Largest unavailable catalog? Probably Steve Lacy, too!
  14. That's true, but think of all the Ellington material that isn't available on CDU!
  15. Does anyone here have the set? If so, what do you think of it?
  16. He's 50 years old and been recording for about 28 years...
  17. I just noticed this listing. Is it becoming available again? Jimmy Webb – The Moon's A Harsh Mistress – 5 CD box (Rhino Handmade) — $62.99!
  18. An unscientific name search at CD Universe shows: Duke Ellington (416) Louis Armstrong (411) Miles Davis (398) Charlie Parker (226)
  19. It's not listed on the website for discs available, but I was thinking of trying anyways for that Ran Blake album. Has anyone heard it? Yes, but not recently. Probably good.
