I noticed the same thing. No fun, no enthusiasm, no fire. They lost to a great football team this evening. Will any team be able to beat the Saints? I don't think the Pats have recovered from that loss to the Colts. They had that game in hand and found a way to lose. It's still gnawing at them, I'm sure. Will they get their act together by playoffs? We'll see. Right now, I just don't see any team that comes close to the Saints. Colts aren't even close. They've had to mount major 4th quarter comebacks in so many games this season. That kind of stuff comes back to bite you. Saints look complete. Wow. Didn't see that one coming. Well, probably everyone expects this now, but I foresee it will come down to Saints v. Vikings in the NFC Title game. That should be a classic. (I might even watch ) The winner most likely playing the Colts, though they could get upset at exactly the wrong time.

If that's the case, he was probably late. There were some stores in our area opening at 3am on Friday. Absurd! Oh, yes, this is the alleged "other" woman (and, no, I don't mean the one on the left ). Any questions? I don't know ... she doesn't look nearly blonde enough for Tiger.

Grrr. Slow server. Stupid double post.

I actually had to get a new printer -- not by choice -- but because Dell decided not to pay their techies to upgrade the drivers on the older printers for Windows 7. Thanks a bundle, Dell. That's the last time I will ever be a customer of yours. I put a Canon printer in my Amazon cart at a very good price, and when I woke up on Black Friday it was $25 less. The price on printers has gotten so insanely low that for many brands it is almost like razors and razor blades. The printer is nearly free, and they make their money back by selling ink!

I've got The Flip too. I guess I could go check the pressing, though it didn't strike me as particularly rare. -
I've never gotten myself into financial trouble, if that's what you mean. But I do try to split sending items to my house and to my work, so that my wife isn't always seeing delivery packages (and this is after cutting way back from a few years ago). I guess that is the sign of an addict. The sales pitch can be awfully strong. Just the other day I was walking by a place that had Oriental rugs for 80% off. I was mightily tempted despite the fact that a) I know intellectually they must have raised the sticker price by 40% or more, b) I don't really have room for an Oriental rug unless I got rid of a different run and c) with two small children it would get ruined anyway. But in the end, I was able to walk away.

MG I thought that might catch your eye. I inadvertently ordered two of this if you can believe it! Anyway, the cities are Pikine, a suburb of Dakar, Winterveld on the outskirts of Pretoria, Doula, Cameroon, and then African immigrants in Jeddah, Saudia Arabia. The focus is on informal work practices in African cities.

I am starting another round of shelf clearing. There are slightly over 100 CDs added below. In the meantime I have the Dexter Gordon Mosaic Select for sale. It's in very good shape. I'm asking $55, which will include shipping to the US. $5 additional shipping to Canada. Will have to price shipping to Europe. Shipping for 1-2 CDs will be $2 to US, $3 to Canada, will check for Europe/Japan. Buying 3 or more CDs will be free shipping to US and Canada. 10% discount for 6 or more CDs (not counting $1 CDs). I've tried to be careful with condition, cut-outs, etc., but please let me know if you want a second look before ordering. Thanks! You never know. They're manufacturing X number of copies, based on sales forecasts. What if it's a dud sales-wise? It may not get remaindered through Amazon; instead, it could be through some no-name reseller on Ebay. Remember, by and large, I don't think this is meant to appeal to jazz buffs, since they'll already have most of the music (and why pay such a high price just for fill-ins)? Instead, I think it's intended for gift purposes, similar to, oh I don't know, the complete Get Smart on DVD. Sure, there's a market, but did they nail the forecast accurately? That's the question. Amazon might make it difficult to resell, but I guess you never know. I have and love the Glenn Gould box set, but I really think this is a different market (and one that is harder to judge whether Amazon got it right). I'm not an expert, but I don't think all of Gould's ouevre was in print at any one time, the way the Miles has been kept in print by Columbia. And I admit I was wrong about the Beatles box set, but the difference there was the remastering. Nothing indicates that enough of this box has been remastered to convince me that it is worth my dollars. It certainly doesn't do anything for me, as I have anything I would want from the box already. But yeah, as a corporate gift, maybe, though I think more people will gravitate to the AK100 DVD box.

One detail that is classic (since it seems he is basically ok, we can laugh about it) is that his wife used one of his clubs to smash in a window and get him out, so the car must have been pretty damaged. It does sound awfully weird -- probably worth 15 minutes in the Tiger Woods Story when it gets released in 2015.

Well, it is supposed to be lossless or close to it, sort of like FLAC. I do most of my listening via WinAmp, and there are fairly simple steps to get it to play Ape (and FLAC) files. I usually just search on the internet for the plug-ins.

Thanks, guys. That makes me considerably more interested.

It certainly looks fascinating. One thing I can't tell is if all the tracks are solo piano, particularly the last few CDs. Personally I would e more inclined to buy if the format was mixed up a bit, but I know someone who would love a big box set of solo piano pieces. Thanks.

What's on your Thanksgiving menu this year?
ejp626 replied to Free For All's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Usually it is mac n' cheese, mashed potatoes, green beans and sweet potato pie. This year it will be baked ziti instead of mac n' cheese. (Being vegetarian, it always seemed pointless to pretend I was just part of the crowd by eating tofurkey.) -
Well, my copy of Johnny Griffin's Take My Hand turned up, but it had this ridiculous cover and was probably some kind of a rip-off. It sounds ok and has the correct tracks (in a slightly jumbled order), so I probably won't go through the trouble of returning it. Anyway, this led me to go through Griffin's discography, and I learned about Birdology v. 1 and 2 where he is paired with Jackie McLean and a rhythm section of Duke Jordan, Ron Carter and Roy Haynes. I'd never heard of this. Even if it is just a blowing session, I felt I had better grab it. There are still some copies floating about for not too much. Then MG convinced me to picked up the Stitt 2-fer Move on Over: The Eddie Buster Sides. And I also ordered Ghana Special: Modern Highlife, Afro-Sounds and Ghanaian Blue 1968-1981 But other than that I've been good. (Hoping Santa will bring me Vonski Speaks.)

At a flea market? Yardsale? I think he's replying to the post that Barnes and Noble is having a 50% off sale on all Criterions.
-
Just a head's up that Barnes and Noble is having a 50% off all Criterions sale. Can't tell how long -- maybe a couple of weeks. It appears to apply to everything, including the Criterion and Eclipse box sets. Unfortunately, the sale does not appear to apply to pre-orders so the two sets I am most interested in -- Rossellini's War Trilogy and potentially AK100 -- will not be covered. This sale seems to hit every year around Thanksgiving, so I can afford to be patient and see if I can scoop these up next year. Oh, they even seem to have a few copies of Ran left in stock, so this might be a good time to grab them before they are gone forever.

Interesting. Certainly a good price at FNAC, though with shipping not too good on this side of the pond. However, it looks like Amazon is already importing them: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002BX4VH...-30&seller= And here is a Bechet 3 CD set: http://www.amazon.com/Jazz-RTL-Sidney-Bechet/dp/B001NXO8WO

Well, that is very cool. Thanks. I'll give it a listen and try to report back within the week. Like the blog too.

Wow - had no idea this thread was here - this is the first post I noticed since I joined back in March. I have the Don Lee poem in a book called Understanding the New Black Poetry, edited by Stephen Henderson, but it was published in 1972, so it would probably not be much easier to find than the original chapbook. Anyway, I'm excited to see this thread. ... Well, I found a copy, though now I can't recall which of his early chapbooks it was in. It seems he has not kept it in print whenever he puts out a new collected or selected poems. I think it is unfortunate, but I guess he has mellowed and doesn't want to attack the church anymore. On a much more debased note, Roger Ebert has been running a limerick competition here: http://blogs.suntimes.com/ebert/2009/11/ho...eet_mrlear.html I guess the competition will be open for another few days. A little of this goes a long way, and there are already 250+ limericks at the site. Still, some of them are awfully clever. Probably 70% or more are dirty. Here is a "clean" one that I submitted: The world’s too much with us, he sighed. To reimagine the world, I have tried, emulating the Greeks. This lasted for weeks, then I threw myself into the tide.

I took the list from Wiki, and I have to agree with you, Henry Sugar (and even The Vicar) definitely ride the line and are not entirely "kids' books." I probably would read some of the stories to my kids but not all. I'm currently skimming his description of going to English public school. What a sea change. It is astounding how in a relatively short period, collectively most Western nations decided that corporal punishment, particularly by teachers, was unacceptable. I'm certainly not sorry I missed out on beatings at school (even if it would have made me a better writer). Still, Boy is in the box set, and Henry Sugar could have been included as well. It would have fit thematically anyway. I did read The Vicar of Nibbleswicke. It is one of the last things he wrote -- a fable of sorts that was to benefit a charity working with people with dyslexia. It's fine but very slight. Unfortunately because some of the reversed words are kind of obscene, I'm going to hold off on reading it to my kids for now. So I would probably have put it into the adult column. (And I would generally recommend just borrowing it from the library.)

Read about 20-25 pages of The Transit of Venus. Just could not get into it. Shirley Hazzard is like a living High Priestess of Modernism. Like Djuna Barnes cubed. Deliberately, willfully obscure prose that just begs the reader to "look at how clever I am." I looked at the reviews on Amazon, and nearly half the readers couldn't even tell how the book ended, since everything is so over-written. 20 years ago, I would have (probably) lapped this up, and even 5 years ago I would have forced myself to finish. Now I just feel time is too short. I'm still kind of mad that I forced myself to finish Bolano's Savage Detectives, when the payoff (for me) was so meager. However, I am just really digging Mark Salzman's The Soloist. I'd like to finish in one sitting, but I have a few too many other obligations. Jess Walter's The Zero is on-deck after that, and it also looks promising.
