  1. I mean, DAMN! Did any board members attend any of these sets? If so, what was it like?
  2. Oh my god, this music is amazing. I can't get enough of it. Such bass, such a groove, such an ensemble. It's weird...I was never able to get into Live Evil, or the Fillmore sessions, or even (gasp) Bitches Brew, but after listening though the Cellar Door sessions, I brought those down off the shelf and...well, I get it. I don't know how or why, but I get it. I completely get how this isn't for everyone (although I'm straining to get "mediocre," but different strokes), but damn. TIGHT!
  3. Happy birthday! Hope you can have a ride in something vintage this year, such as:
  4. Ordered Tolliver tonight--should go nicely with the Carmell, Andrew, and Dex sets I've gotten from that series. (and a nice contrast to the Cellar Door sessions!)
  5. Mine arrived today after a short vacation in Hodgkins, Illinois. Have to echo what Lon said. I'm only one disc in so far, but man--this is some really really killer stuff. I think I can honestly say that, other than cranking "On the Corner" or something, I've never really quite heard anything like this. I don't know why, but Live Evil never moved me; not sure whether it was the splicing (although after hearing this "raw" I wonder if that would make me crazy (or if I'd even hear it, really)) or muddy sound, or what, but that one sat in the shelves. This will not sit in the shelves! Such a tight damn groove! Exuberance! Could I listen to all six discs at one sitting? Initially, I thought "no way"...but no "beat" fatigue so far! And again, a hearty to CDU for honoring the pre-sale price. I'm thrilled to have this in my collection!
  6. Whoa...what a choice...Bobby? McCoy?? Thelonious??? Damn...those were some _times_! Thanks a lot, kh1958--I appreciate it! Bobby Timmons at Boomer's Zoot Sims Quartet at the Half Note McCoy Tyner Quintet at Slug's Thelonious Monk at the Village Vanguard (isn't this near the end of his public performances?).
  7. But do you like doobie in your funk? Hoh!!!
  8. Because the thread is about Dexter Gordon? See also Paul Chambers thread, Miles Davis Thread, myriad of Coltrane threads, usw. Nonetheless, I wouldn't say he's being "singled out" for it--the thread is about his playing, and folks are arguing (in some cases, somewhat compellingly) that they can hear it in his playing. Strongly disagree with your sweeping generalization, by the way.
  9. State your opinion and defend it if you wish; about the only "rule." Why some people take a "my opinion or the highway" approach is beyond me. Allen, I do hear what you describe from your interveiew with LTD in his playing and I think your description is spot on and an interesting characterization. For me, however, what you describe is what I love about his playing--a little stop time here, behind the beat there, and then, all of a sudden, a rush forward. Chemically-induced or not, I love the technique (or symptom, depending on your opinon!).
  10. Second (third? Fourth?) the Takacs recordings. Completely brilliant. I discovered the Takacs quartet from recommendations here for their recordings of the Bartok quartets (truly sublime and highly recommended). Not to derail, but who has and can comment on the Takacs recording of the Smetana and Borodin quartets?
  11. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy New Year, Seasons Greetings, etc. to all-- Going to take the train to Portland for a couple days--I don't even want to think about the inside of a car this time of year! Stay safe and warm, y'all!
  12. Even more restrictive now. FMV is what the damn thing sold for at auction (makes sense, right?) unless it sold for less than $500, in which case FMV is $500.
  13. From alchoholreviews.com ( ) For my secretary: and
  14. Twere'nt me, my man...I'll stick with my 47 W. 63rd mono version!
  15. Yeah, but what do you hear if you play the record backwards?
  16. Thanks, FFA!
  17. Have to agree with everything that's been said. Byrd was all over this record--it's really an "alive" session to me.
