  1. Seattle Symphony-- Christian Knapp, conductor Garrick Ohlsson, piano Brahms: Academic Festival Overture Schumann: Piano Concerto Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 2
  2. Upping this thread to say that their latest CD, "People People Music Music" is out and a terrific listen for those who are into these guys. They even do a version of Speak Like a Child (bear with me) that sounds like something Herbie would have done with the tune if he had recorded it in 1979. Good stuff!
  3. Caught this show in Seattle on Tuesday with fellow board member TroyK (who seems to have been lost in the laughing gas incident). Good, solid playing--it was terrific to see Golson. Good anecdotes and stories between songs, just like Poppa Lou or Gerald Wilson. The pianist was a monster; Buster Williams on bass was solid; drummer was "okay". I think it was about $20 in Seattle as well, and I agree--"giving it away." Go if you can.
  4. The one-way rentals can be insane. It's all supply & demand, fed into some weird proprietary moving company software. When we moved from Seattle to Philadelphia in 2001, all of the one-way rentals from Seattle east were $1500. When I checked about renting from Portland (OR), the rates were all $750! Go figure. I know this doesn't help, but commiseration is good, no? Certainly check with the major moving companies to see if there's room on a load that's coming your way.
  5. I have the original painting that was used for the cover of Mingus Ah Um, an abstract gouache done by Neil Fujita, then the director of A&R at Columbia. I got it at an auction in New Jersey--not sure anyone knew exactly what it was. I'll post a photograph of it later today. Probably my most prized possession.
  6. See also, Organissimo: Peaches en Regalia!
  7. Sounded VERY good, by the way (FIDF, not Freebird, which you guys sucked it up and played next, right?)
  8. A nice chianti. And some fava beans. What wine would you recommend?
  9. This is one of the most depressing things I've red in a while. Every time I hear about something like this happening with regard to an artisan of this country's sole original art form, I just get pissed. Problem is, I have no idea what to do, what I can or could do, other than buy the music, go to the gigs, spread the word. Bertrand, I hope your plan works out, and like others here, am happy to help to the extent I can.
  10. Upping this for anyone who hasn't seen the article. Absolutely terrific work all around, from the photos to the interview to Brownie's reminiscinses. What a great read. The magazine is terrific--I just ordered a 2-year subscription!
  11. 25 or 6 to 4???
  12. Buy the goddamn thing already. If you don't like it, I'll buy it from you!
  13. That's a good looking lab, Ron!
  14. I could also go for some of these:
  15. [comes out of the musical closet] I was 16 and got a paying gig playing incidental piano music between acts and at intermissions for a series of Noel Coward plays at the University of Portland. Gigged a bit through the rest of high school, and then a little in college, and now...14 years on, haven't done a thing. I miss it sometimes.
  16. It's been a bit of a BN drought for me, having most of the sessions they've released recently. But with this batch, they're gonna get me in the wallet for sure! I've got the Jackie Mac, Blakey, and Ilori on vinyl, but I'll be getting Holiday for Skins anyway as my copies are beat to hell. The Hill and Evans are no-brainers, and I'll get the Blackburn because I'm intrigued, and because the Sonny Criss Imperial Sessions was a huge positive addition to my collection, and well, why the hell not??? A nice birthday present, certainly!
  17. Damn. I'm standing alone for Vlasic? Shit, I can't even find those bastards on the left coast. Now eating: a Nalley baby dill. Because this thread made me hungry. Mmmmm, pickles. Go well with Pinot Noir, too!
  18. Yeah, but moving *.gif!
  19. Clausson? No way. For me it's Vlasic all the way:
  20. I said the same thing to him yesterday! He's going to grow up to have a foul mouth. At least he's behaving well enough at this point that he won't think his name is "goddamnit"!
  21. His name is Luke (he does not live on the second floor). Let me see if I can add a picture. He's _really_ settling down--it didn't take nearly as long as I thought it would during my neurotic weekend!
