  1. Vision, timing, skill and strength make it happen - if you are a total weakling you're not going to smack a ball 350 feet no matter how perfectly you hit it (if anyone knows this it's me!)... similarly the stronger you are, the less perfectly you have to hit a ball to make it travel a given distance (witness McGuire's check swing homers). So are you Kruk or Kuip? Miller? Angel? Greenwald?
  2. TX had some cool bands in that time frame. I was really into the Big Boys and the Dicks.
  3. Slovenly was a pretty awesome band. I never really gave The Lazy Cowrgirls or the Divine Horsemen much of a chance back then - I wasn't quite so "sophisticated" in my taste as an early teen and was a little put off by the divirse influences. If I ever see one of their records at a friend's house I'll throw it on. It's been YEARS since I heard this group, so don't take this as a current endorsement, but back in the day the lesser-known SST band that I was really into was Bl'Ast.
  4. Or a drummer who's not quite "right"?
  5. I don't understand...? OK, ask a body builder if he thinks 'roids will make you see the ball better or give you the skill to hit a curveball. I freakin' DARE you to. Any other justification beyond the reality of that simple point is patent bullshit...that or total Bonds envy. The largely white controlled media told you to believe so. Dude, as a fellow Giants fan (born/raised in SF) I want to get along with you, but you are a total spinmeister on this topic - I'd really like to see you actually address the point for once.
  6. Blue Note = Cecil Taylor AHA 3 + Bey =
  7. I don't understand your point. Bonds was rewarded with nearly 20 million and gets accolades from SF fans.
  8. In the news again: http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/science/05/03...g.ap/index.html
  9. I'm weary. I think I might dislike Santana as much as I like Alice.
  10. Tonight I'm going to see some piano trio with a guy called Cecil Taylor and some singer named... what was it again... Andy Grey? Right - Andy Bey. Hopefully they'll play Strangers in the Night. Should be a romantic evening.
  11. Thanks - I'm leaning towards Saturday - Friday there is an Andrew Cyrille/Reggie Workman show I want to check out.
  12. Does Threadgill just not play out? I've never had the chance to see him.
  13. As soon as I read the NBA's bullshit reason for not releasing their data, I was skeptical of their study.
  14. But if you never bring them up because Righetti sucks or the PCL is a deceptively easy pitcher's league or whatever the issue is... what is gained then? Again, Cain is a young guy... One concern is that Cain and Lincecum apparently hate each other, but for hte money they are making (even at the min) I think they can learn to deal.
  15. Funny, it was a very immediate connection for me. But then I've always had sort of unusual taste in music.
  16. Thanks for posting this. I'll go on 5/18 for sure.
  17. The Giants have a rich recent tradition of pitchers lighting up the minors and flaming out in the majors (the AFW trio being the most obvious examples, and Cain being the obvious exception... so far). Personally, I suspect that Righetti is worse than useless as a coach, which is one reason to be glad that Bochy is the manager now. I sometimes wonder if Liriano and Nathan would have been any good w/ SF had they not been traded. I have to admit that I wasn't sad to see Nathan go at the time - he was really horrible that one year.
  18. I never thought I could get so attached to an animal, but since a stray walked in my window a few years back I've come to think of him as family. Best wishes.
  19. My philosophy with food is that if other people are eating it and not getting sick, I'll give it a try (exceptions: brains, cat meat, dog meat and horse meat, all of which I've had the chance to try). I tried a sea urchin the other day and it almost made me throw up in my mouth, but hey, now I know and I'm none the worse for it. Life is short...
  20. Yeah, I think J and the guys in the minutemen were always the "indie rockers" I most respected as musicians.
  21. Scungilli? These are actually pretty good to eat.
  22. The Giants already pay into revenue sharing under the current system (though not much, as I recall). I believe they once tried to negotiate an offset for the payments on their self-financed stadium, but that didn't go anywhere.
  23. You mean geoducks? They actually aren't very good. To much squishy stuff to have in your mouth at one time. You find these things on the beach in the northwest.
  24. I was *shocked* when I found out how much Slint was getting per show. "Indie" ain't what it used to be... I think what might be in SY's minds regarding the whole Daydream revival thing is that their art is as valid as, say, modern composition, and that presenting it in a similar way is therefore a reasonable (maybe even laudible) thing to do. If that's the rationalization, the fact that they are going to make a ton of cash of it doesn't hurt either.
