Sort of. You can write code that removes harshness and makes a small file sound more pleasing to the ear, but (except for extraordinary coincidence) it isn't the same data that you would have in a lossless primary source file. Interestingly, astronomers were working on very similar problems when the data recording systems in the Hubble failed in the mid 90s. Edit - my typo rate has increased by about 100-fold over the past couple months - WTF?

Honeybees Dying Off in US and Parts of Europe
J Larsen replied to J Larsen's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Great to see this in the mainstream news at last - it was on CNN.com this morning as well. As an outside observer, the cell phone theory doesn't wash for me - it does not explain the patterns that have been observed, and there is not clear reason why it would suddenly pose such a huge problem within the last nine months. I'm betting it is one of these newer nicotine-based pesticides that have already been demonstrated to be toxic to bees. Granted I am not a biologist, but it seems plausible to me that low doses of a poison could lead to an immune system failure, which could explain the micro-organisms that have been found in the dead bees. If I am right, I only hope that the manufacturer(s) of the responsible agents will do the decent thing and not do everything possible to block the investigation and ultimately elimation of the products. However, I would not hold my breath. -
I think back in Barry's non-steroid days he was exciting to watch....now he bats a few times a game a few days a week, provides very little excitement on the base paths or in field....not really that exciting (to me). m~ I'm right there with you - he is now a poor fielder, poor runner and streaky hitter with a knee held together with duct tape and no respect for the strategic nuance of the game - not at all exciting to me.

Yet, a lot of New Yorkers don't know it. Which is great, because if they did it would no longer be true! Shutting my mouth now...

Don't do the cargo compartment if you can help it. It really freaks them out. Every animal I've seen come out of cargo was *flipping* out. If your pet is small enough some airlines will let you keep them on baord with you in a Sherpa bag. This is the way to go, assuming we're talking a small critter. The Sherpa website has some info on what various airlines allow: http://www.sherpapet.com/airlines/index.php?air_type= Where are you going? In the states you won't have a problem bringing your pet anywhere, as long as it is not an exotic breed. Going abroad various countries have odd restrictions (I know that France, for example, will not allow a house cat weighing more than 10kg and has a 24 quarantine period when you arrive - a friend had to put her cat on a diet in order to bring it back home!). The dog is actually my parents. Usually they leave it with my sister when they travel, but this time they are going back to Italy to stay and the dog is coming. The dog is a West Highland Terrier so they are border line weight and size wise with a carrier included. I'm afraid to tell them but I think the dog is going to have to ride with the luggage. The best fares are flying into London from JFK. In the past the U.K. has very strict quarantine rules but it looks as if they have relaxed them as long as you have all the records. London would just be a lay over as they planned on going to Amsterdam or Frankfurt while waiting for the car. So, I have no idea what quarantine rules/laws apply. Well, it won't be pleasant, but I'm sure the dog will get over the ordeal. BTW, I always get better fares flying from Newark to London - Newark is a far more convenient airport, too. I'm sure you've done your homework - just a general FYI.

I'm going every night but Thursday, when I'll be seeing Jarrett in lieu of Vision Fest's poetry night. I have week passes.

For the price I guess they are a low-risk proposition, but the sound isn't to my taste.

This Cain fellow on the Giants seems like he ain't so bad. I just wish the Bonds era would end so that I could root for my hometime without mixed emotions.

I'm not picking on anyone, but I've always had a hard time understanding the ambivilance that people have expressed towards Hill, or at least the majority of his work. He is one of the top-tier greats in my book, and always has been. All of his records (especially the 60s dates) work for me - some work and some WORK, but there are no duds in my book. I guess part of it might be that he works in a lot of unusual time signatures, which is something that has never bothered me at all in any type of music. I actually learned to play guitar without the benefit of formal instruction or a metronome as a teen and was thrown for a loop when I first played with a drummer and he looked at me like I was insane... but I digress. Hill was a great musician and tremendous composer who lived a fairly long life and went out with his creative abilities intact. I can see why some people see this as sad, but in a way it is also beautiful (the cancer part does suck, though). In any event, I'll always be grateful for his music.

jimi tape: last live performance
J Larsen replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Yes, it was the family - again, this is going back a ways but I recall them saying that it would be back in print "soon" (this was the mid-90s) with expanded/corrected notes and improved sound, which is why I didn't pick it up at the time. I've regretted that ever since. -

Slightly OT - it's great that they are putting the RAH concert out officially, but when are they going to get around to re-releasing the Stages material? As I recall, when they pulled it OOP in the first place, they said it was just to improve the notes the sound. That was years ago. -
Frankly, I always thought 2nd Ave Deli was kind of gross, but it was a part of *New York* and I was sad to see it go - more sad to see that its space is now occupied by an ugly anywhere USA chase branch.

Is this news? They're real cheap. Fair enough - aren't they like $40 a piece for the basic ones? Still - you can throw away $40 or invest $150 well...

They effing suck! Horrible, horrible, horrible. I'm pretty much a Fulltone/Roger Mayer/occassionally Boss guy (the digital delay pedals are fine, the rest is kind of crap). I was a little into Z Vex for a while but now I can't stand them. I have a buddy who has a Zachary overdrive pedal that is one of the best sounding things I've ever heard, but for the $200 price difference, my OCD works for me. But Danelectro.... no thanks.

I agree - except for Sweet Exorcist.

cd storage for large collections

I was thinking of the same configuration. I'm just a little concerned about them being metal - I hope they don't look like office file cabinets in person. I'm also not a big fan of the locks. But overall this is the best option I've found so far. -

Can you store the back insert from the cd case in the plastic sleeves? Do the sleeves protect the disc well? I might be tempted to go this route too. It's not like the jewel cases are attractive - they remind me of cassette tape cases. -

5,200 is just what 10 of these bookcases will hold. I've only got about 2,500 CD's, and maybe closer to 2,000 is what I really consider "important". I did spend $500 all those cheap bookcases and lumber. But the way I look at it -- that was $500 I could have been spending on more music. In the end, I did by the bookcases and boards, and I'm perfectly happy I did (and so's my wife). But I would have been MUCH less happy if I had spent $1,000 or $1,500 (or more!!) for a more "elegant" solution, when that money could have gone towards other things. And hey, I'm a cheapskate, and proud of it. Doesn't mean I won't spend some serious money for quality in some areas (for instance, we have lots of really cool vintage Danish Modern furniture in our house, in several rooms – and some of it didn’t come cheap). But someplace to store my tunes (upstairs, where most people don’t even see them) wasn't high on my list of places to shell out a ton of cash. (I also drive a 13-year old Honda Accord wagon, that I still love, and hope I can drive another 5 years or more.) Just a matter of priorities. (And buying the cheap bookcases meant I could afford the more expensive vintage Danish Modern stuff.) I'm thinking of ordering a Can-Am unit for my new place unless anyone has had bad experiences since this thread sank to the depths and wants to warn me. I'm really tired of having walls covered with shelves filled with cds - it looks really cluttered to me. On a side note, nice chair, Rooster - I'm really into Danish modern stuff too (as well as American modern - I've got a bit of Nelson, Eames, Noguchi, Sapper, etc in my place). The next time you find yourself in NYC, you should go to ModernLink on Bond street. It is hands down the best store I've ever been to for authentic Danish modern furniture - it really doubles as a museum. It's easily my favorite furniture shop in Manhattan - their original stuff (which you can find on the web) is very cool, but the vintage stuff that they get (not on the web) is really incredible. Also, I assume you know all the really cool websites devoted to Danish design, but here are a couple good ones in case anyone else is interested: https://ext.kb.dk/F/-?func=option-update-ln...p;p_con_lng=eng http://www.dmk.dk/furniture/all/ -
mutual funds with unusual names
J Larsen replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
There is a fund of hedge funds called the Man Group or something like that - always thought that was sort of odd (although I suppose it could possibly be a last name). -
Ornette wins the Pulitzer

But I've seem them on the west coast for around $20 as well (although they may have been on tour - I don't recall) - I still think 20 grand is way high of a guess, but who knows... I think in general Zorn doesn't make a lot of money off of his public performances. But this is a wild, irrelevant and not terribly interesting tangent, I admit... just something that jumped into my head.
