  1. IMO, George Huff should be in the top three, two even. He may not have performed well on the night but on the following half hour results show, he delivered much much better and without resorting to all that reaching for high notes/screaming that some of the ladies were doing. This guy also has the stuff to be a good jazz singer, if only he were exposed to more of the music. Anyhow, he'd have had a BIG problem delivering the Donna Summer songs in this latest round, if he were still in. Or, did they choose the theme cause all the guys had been eliminated?
  2. The darned internet coupled with the credit card are the worst of them all - it's so easy to place orders (far too often) especially when there's total lack of will to refrain from doing so. Whereas, with bricks and mortar stores, festivals etc, you would need to travel to those places to buy items. The very thought of having to navigate horrendous traffic jams, paying for parking, petrol, car maintenance etc is a very good deterrent, for me at least. Solution: Cut all access to internet and credit cards - but in this day and age, that's virtually impossible.
  3. I've been hesitating on acquiring the Trio and Standards discs but the recommendations/comments here have really got me itching to take the plunge. Another for the all-star date "Sonny's Crib".
  4. I haven't listened to the albums for some years now, but based on the choice of classic songs, vote goes to the Clifford Brown and Max Roach album.
  5. Time Waits - Bud Powell (I'll omit the Amazing Bud Powell from the end of that one, so it's Waits)

    Elvin Jones

This is indeed sad news. Will spin many of his records as tribute to this great musician.
  7. I'm sure plenty of people in East and South East Asia will be buying PIRATED copies of this CD.
  8. Haven't watched this week's instalment but looks like there're no guys left in the competition. Excerpt from Idol site: FAREWELL TO GEORGE HUFF This week, Big Band night transported the Idols back to the years of slick hair, smooth music and flowing dresses. But you didn't think George handled the time transport as well as the other contestants, and your votes sent him home. With only four contestants and three weeks remaining, the pressure is greater than ever.

    Count Basie 100th

I'm going to my first ever jazz live performance/concert, next month, and the performers will be the Count Basie Orchestra! Can't wait for that one!
  10. Okie Dokie, hope this one's not been used yet. Out There (Eric Dolphy)
  11. Out to Lunch (Eric Dolphy)
  12. 32-33 degrees Celcius all year long, rain or shine. Been raining almost everyday the past 14 months. Very unusual weather.
  13. My deepest condolences to your family and you.
  14. Anyone want a clip of his performance on Idol?? FOC
  15. Since Jim R's ended with Me and the Blues I'd go with Blues for Smoke (Jaki Byard)
  16. Noted. And add: - Lovie Austin - International Sweethearts of Rhythm
  17. Thanks Patricia for that bio. on John R.T. I really admire him for his dedication to and meticulous work on early jazz material. Three cheers (and more) for Mr John R.T Davies!
  18. Pianists all. Lil Harden Armstrong Marian McPartland Carla Bley (for her compositions too)
  19. Never owned one of them 45s but I did test out one of my dad's, I think it was The Shadow's Walk Don't Run. Quite liked this instrumental.
  20. Some 'lovelies' from the 60s: Leapy Lee - Little Arrows Tom Jones - What's New Pussycat, Delilah Donovan - Mellow Yellow

    Ellington Suites

Another favourite is the Liberian Suite. Deep South Suite is a 4-parter rarely performed by the Duke and includes "Happy-Go-Lucky Local", whose riff was later used by Jimmy Forrest in "Night Train". The suite can be found on Classics 1946 (#1015) and disc.1 of Music Masters' Great Chicago Concerts. Here's a link to a website listing the suites and another. Can't vouch for their accuracy though.
  22. Every decade had its share of horrid pop songs and I concur with many of those listed above although I do like Ebony & Ivory. OTOH McCartney's duet with MJ on This Girl Is Mine is . IMO, one of the worst songs ever was from the 50s, sung by Patti Page, How Much is That Doggy in the Window. Can't believe this childish ditty even sold in the multi-millions.

    Ellington Suites

Some favourites: Deep South Suite Far East Suite Black, Brown & Beige (50s Columbia version)
  24. Artie Shaw. I have no sources to confirm this but he may be on records made in the late 20s with Irving Aaronson's Commanders.
  25. Haven't listened to Revolver in a long while too. On CD, Yellow Submarine is song number 6 after Here, There & Everywhere.
