  1. I don't know what happened today... maybe I'm just not in the mood for Sonny playing like Bird? Now playing is fitting my mood much better:.. Oliver Jackson - Billie's Bounce (Black & Blue). I am very glad i bought this during my last trip to Stereo Jack's. I saw Norris Turney's name on there and I had to take a chance. What's up with the prices on the CD version of this? I figured I'd pick up a copy, but not for $70! It's good, but it's not that good.
  2. Sonny Stitt - Stitt Plays Bird (Atlantic). For some reason, I seem to remember liking this better the last time I played it. Seems a bit of "where's my check" date for Sonny. My 70's LP sounds like shit too. I think there's some bits of paper pressed into both sides near the edge of the LP. Crackles galore. How did Jim Hall get on this?
  3. I thought they went under... good that they are still active. The club closed though, right?
  4. What is up with that cover? A pictorial representation of a cat's fart?
  5. I've still never hard the Trainwreck, but I have heard several other unissued Blue Note dates and I agree with you that Michael is being too harsh on some of these dates. Yes, there are warts, but to state that they're all unissued "for a very good reason" is going too far in my estimation. For instance, I think that Blakey's Jazz Messengers recording from 1959 could be released with some judicious editing, and I've never even heard all the takes. Sure, it would take some track splicing and maybe some synchronization trickery, but with today's music editing programs, probably doable. They do much more with today's modern pop songs. AutoTune anyone? Ike Quebec's date with Grant Green is different story. I don't think that one is worthy of putting out even though Grant Green plays pretty well on most of it. Truth be told, they all sound wasted to me, much like that Dexter Gordon/Sonny Stitt date that they issued one track from ("Oh, Lady Be Good" on that Lost Sessions Connoisseur CD).
  6. For those of you contemplating a last minute purchase. I've re-read this thread and noticed that I declared that I would pass. I'm going to pass (again). I do like the music but all these false starts and alternates would just drive me nuts.
  7. Many people are angry because Cosby got away with this for so long. If he had gotten arrested and jailed after the first one, there would be a lot less anger and at least 35 more women who might not have been raped.
  8. "After 40 years of doing Blue Note, there's still a few things unissued and believe me, they're unissued for a very good reason". I guess we can forget about that Tyrone Washington.
  9. Last Chance! The Complete Dial Modern Jazz Sessions Final Pressing MUST ORDER BY OCTOBER 2 (1 week) We've always been diligent about warning you when sets were running low so you wouldn't miss out on titles that you wanted. We want to keep every set active as long as possible. We will be ordering a FINAL repressing of The Complete Dial Modern Jazz Sessions and will be taking advance orders. We are currently out of stock. If you've been considering this collection and not yet obtained it, now would be the time to step up in order to secure one. Your credit card will not be charged until we repress the set and ship it to you (however paypal is immediately deducted from your funds). Thank you for your support, Michael and Scott I would order this set as it has great music but not with all those alternate takes. I'd buy a "master takes" edition.
  10. I did talk to Michael Cuscuna about this back when this set was deleted and I seem to remember that they went to re-press the CDs and the label denied their request. This is why it went out of print almost instantly. As to why the were denied, I can't remember right now.
  11. I saw Frank live several times and thoroughly enjoyed his playing. Over the years, I've picked up many of his recordings like "Autumn", "Chant", "Play", "Rumors" and "Lullabluebye"... see a trend? I'm surprised that this CD isn't simply titled "Monk"? I have no doubt that Kimbrough can do justice here. Just listen to the title track of his recording, "Lullabluebye" to hear him play in a style very reminiscent of Monk on a tune he composed. I think he'll do fine here.
  12. Where are Brach's candy corn being made these days? Last year, all of the name brands in the local grocery store were made in Mexico.
  13. He seems to have fixed his error with the exception of still using the wrong LP cover art down at the bottom. EDIT: Oh wait, you're right that he still refers to the wrong catalog numbers for this Milestone two-fer.
  14. Facebook has informed me that my friend Michael Cuscuna is 70 today. Wow. How time flies. I still have this on my office wall. Michael signed it, "To Kevin - Thanks for keeping me off the web".
  15. It looks like Garnett is still with us: https://www.facebook.com/garnett.brown.35. He was at board member Valerie Bishop's memorial service at Catalina's with a whole slew of Jazz masters. I still miss Val. Garnett Brown is in the center, in front of Herbie.
  16. The few Impulse! HMV pressings I've picked up had RVG stampers.
  17. I was down in Orlando many years ago and planned to see Sam Rivers with his orchestra and I just got too tired so I skipped it. I never got to see Sam. From what I was later told, Sam might not have been there anyway so I take so solace in that. Still bums me out that I missed his *band* too. BTW - if you click the little dot (or star if you've posted in it) next to the thread title, it'll bring you to the first unread post and you'll avoid seeing JohnS's post #1.
  18. I was doing a search for something here and this old thread came up. I read through it and got pretty bummed out by the names of those who have since departed and noticing that all of the incredible homemade cover art is gone. It seems that none of the pictures remain. Did they get accidentally removed or was it during one of the board upgrades? There were several great ones in this thread. I wish I saved all of them.
  19. I do like Byas on this CD: And that recent release from the Nederlands Jazz Archief label:
  20. I just wish this was released 20-25 years back when most CDs, rock in particular, weren't compressed to un-listenable levels. Now I'll have to wait for the reviews to find out if the mastering engineer did it right for a change. BTW, I'm in the same boat with the new John Lennon "Imagine" box set that's due to release soon. I want to hear it but I don't want to buy a sonic morass.
  21. I finally picked up the CD version of this last night and I hope to give it a spin later. I was going to get the LP version but it was double the price, dropped the two bonus tracks and I can find no information about whether or not purchasing the LP gives access to a digital download of the material - so CD it is.
  22. "avant-garde pianist Steve Kuhn"? Is there another side of Steve Kuhn that I didn't know about?
  23. Who cares? It's still Issac singing "Disco Shuffle"!
  24. I do dig Kimbrough's playing a lot but 6 discs of him playing Monk tunes is a bit much. Will they do a single disc "Best of" version?
  25. Harry Allen is swinging through for his annual visit to Jocko's Sahara Jazz Club in Methuen, MA. Although I live in Maine now, I'll still be making the trek to Methuen tonight. I don't miss Allen's visits. Next week, Greg Abate is coming back for another visit. I may have to make it two weeks in a row.
