  1. I used to be a firm believer that higher resolution discs, SACD and DVD-Audio, produced superior quality audio. And then Fantasy came out with a batch of SACDs that sounded "Meh" and then UMG came out with those Peter Gabriel and Police SACDS that sounded worse than "Meh". The final straw was when the entire Genesis catalog was reissued on remastered SACDS that sounded like audio doo-doo. It's all in the mastering. Digitized audio doo-doo sounds like analog audio doo-doo no matter the resolution.
  2. A couple of problems with this article: 1) Tidal streaming at "CD quality" is not "Hi res". Tidal is regular res. CD is regular res. 2) Of course people won't be able to tell the difference between 320 kBps compressed audio and "CD quality". At that high of a bit rate, it's been scientifically proven that it *is* indistinguishable from the source i.e. the CD. If they had compared real Hi Res streams with audio mastered at Hi Res, like Acoustic Sounds' Super HiRez or some of the real Hi Res at HD Tracks, to Spotify and Apple Music, then I'd be curious to see if people heard a difference. EDIT: I'm guessing that they will still have some difficulty telling the difference, but I'd really like to find out.
  3. I just got the E-mail that I didn't get it after all. They must've only got in a couple of copies. So I guess I'm waiting like everyone else now.
  4. I just got my notice and ordered it. Hopefully it comes in.
  5. If the weather holds, I may see you there. I missed this band the last few times they came through and have regretted it. I just wish winter wasn't so bad around here. I have an hour drive to get home from Boston so I can't see myself doing that in a blizzard. I've bought tickets to many winter shows over the years and was unable to go due to the snow. I ain't dying for a Jazz show.
  6. Can I ask why you wouldn't rather go to the Black Art Jazz Collective the night before Roney's show? The Black Art Jazz Collective is a killer band: Jeremy Pelt - Trumpet Wayne Escoffrey - Tenor James Burton - Trombone Danny Grissett - Piano Vincente Archer - Bass Johnathan Blake - Drums I'm actually thinking about that one but I wait to see what the weather brings.
  7. Alright, alright... I guess I have to buy it. Too many superlatives in this thread and for under $2/disc, why not give it a try?
  8. Scullers rarely lists the band members. I've been asking them for this for quite a while. I've skipped a few shows only to find out that the backing band had some of my favorite players in it, so I should have gone. It can be frustrating. I saw Blanchard a few years back and he played a nice set. Nothing stands out in my memory of it being a "can't miss" show but I doubt you'd be disappointed. I see you found his current band. That sax player is only 18, so it's unlikely that you've seen him before.
  9. If you've ever gone to lift the tonearm off the record, dropped it, heard that "wrrrrrrruurrrp" and then looked at an LP with a large scratch across several tracks, you'd know that a diamond stylus beats vinyl every time.
  10. U-Turn Audio's Orbit Basic Turntable $179: https://uturnaudio.com/products/orbit-basic-turntable Although it gets a bit more expensive, add the $40 cue arm (https://uturnaudio.com/products/orbit-cue). No one should use a turntable without a cue arm. You're just looking for a scratched record.
  11. I've had this item saved in my Amazon "Save For Later" list for several months. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000062VUO/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_2?smid=A2P0F4MQY62SCT&psc=1
  12. I swear that they watch this place for these reissues. I often see their listing pop up within hours of someone here mentioning it.
  13. CD Japan has not had these yet - at least this was true the last time I looked.
  14. Cambridge Soundworks used to make "great bang for the buck" speakers. They almost created the "sub/sat" speaker industry that sprang up in the early 90s. I used to highly recommend their Tower II speakers for people who wanted great sound on a budget. They were particularly good speakers if you wanted to crank it up a bit. Speaking of cheap audio, what are people recommending for PC speakers these days?
  15. I have most of these already or else this would be a great way to acquire them.
  16. That Tivoli clock radio looks like a real dog. The Amazon reviews are pretty bad. From overly bright lights to poorly contrasted, or rather, unreadable writing on the dials, it doesn't seem like something I'd want. On top of that, it has one of those single arm alarms. Am I the only one who remembers how shitty those were to set? You almost always had to stick to "on the hour" alarms and even if you did that, you could be off by 10 minutes in either direction. Yuck.
  17. I just got an e-mail that that this release is delayed. I'm guessing that it's due to the need for new artwork:
  18. I don't think those sound samples sound all that great. Typical bootleg quality.
  19. I once had a bunch of mp3 files that I copied from a data CD-R come over as "Read only" and I couldn't edit the tags. I had to edit the file properties to get file write properties back.
  20. I can't believe that the value of this incredible set has dropped so much. I remember a time when this set was fetching almost $300 on eBay. I almost sold mine at the time. Wish I did now. I could've re-bought it for $95.
  21. It wasn't really a "use it" thing, I just happened to notice weird artwork one day. I had accidentally pasted in the wrong album art for several songs I had on a USB stick. I checked the songs at home and they were fine but when they popped up on the car audio player's screen (if I noticed it) it was wrong. In a few cases, it was actually some work spreadsheets that I accidentally pasted in as "album art" so I really wanted to figure out how the hell that happened. It wasn't until I edited the actual mp3 tags that I found out that the artwork is in there in 3 places. Once I deleted all of the artwork entries and re-pasted in the correct artwork, everything was fine. BTW, I have a boombox that plays CD-Rs filled with mp3 files. It was cool when it came out as it allowed me to play a lot of music on the back deck with a single disc. If those mp3 files had any artwork encoded into them at all, the first few seconds of each track got clipped. Somehow this boombox was "reading" the mp3 tag (it displayed the song artist & album) and if it encountered album art, it took too long to "read" it and it delayed the playback just enough to blank out a few seconds of the song. Weird, huh? I had to re-burn several CD-Rs with mp3s filled with no artwork.
