Normally I'd jump on this, but I am not a huge fan of Adderley's work of this era. I keep trying to like but something about it just doesn't work for me. I used to have "Radio Nights", which is from this time period and I just didn't dig it. I also remember buying "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" and hating Zawinul's electric piano sound. Maybe that's all it is?

ebay madness re: vinyl

For a VG/VG LP with "REVIEW COPY" stamped on the back? That's nuts. -
What live music are you going to see tonight?

Does Roberta leave the NYC vicinity any more? I can't remember the last time I saw her in a band coming through Boston. It had to be close to 20 years ago.

My local Bull Moose has a buffer and they don't charge much to buff a disc. It was around $1 last time I paid them for it. I have used toothpaste and it did work but don't expect a pretty looking CD afterward. Toothpaste does not have a fine enough grit, so you wind up with a hazy look. It will probably rip in a PC and may play in some CD players, but some players might not be able to read it. BTW - if you ever pick up a CD and it's badly scratched on the label side, those scratches can go right into the Aluminum layer and obliterate the playback. You can usually see these types of scratches in the metal. No buffing will save those.

What vinyl are you spinning right now??

I used to buy 45s at the "corner store" which was a combination pharmacy/soda fountain/candy store/newstand. Hartman's Pharmacy. Those were the days. I especially remember being around 9 or 10 and coming home with a 45 of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love", playing it on the record player and singing "Gonna give you every inch of my love" and wondering why my mother came screeching into the room, ripped it off the player and telling me, "This is going back". I had no idea what was going on. -

This Thursday night (10/11), Scullers Jazz Club in Boston is bringing in a killer band. If you are going to be in or around Boston and you're free Thursday night, you might want to check it out. Drummer Ralph Peterson is bringing his "Messenger Legacy Band" together for a one night show with Bobby Watson & Bill Pierce on saxes, Brian Lynch on trumpet, Geoff Keezer on piano & Essiet Essiet on bass. I have front row seats. https://www.musicindustrydatabase.com/event/eventDetail.htm… Buy tickets here: https://www.ticketweb.com/…/the-messenger-legacy-b…/8585065… -
RIP Hamiet. I'll always have those times I saw you up on stage (or marching around it as the case may be ). Prostate cancer sucks. It's so sneaky - no real symptoms until it's almost too late.

I don't know what happened today... maybe I'm just not in the mood for Sonny playing like Bird? Now playing is fitting my mood much better:.. Oliver Jackson - Billie's Bounce (Black & Blue). I am very glad i bought this during my last trip to Stereo Jack's. I saw Norris Turney's name on there and I had to take a chance. What's up with the prices on the CD version of this? I figured I'd pick up a copy, but not for $70! It's good, but it's not that good. -

Sonny Stitt - Stitt Plays Bird (Atlantic). For some reason, I seem to remember liking this better the last time I played it. Seems a bit of "where's my check" date for Sonny. My 70's LP sounds like shit too. I think there's some bits of paper pressed into both sides near the edge of the LP. Crackles galore. How did Jim Hall get on this? -
I thought they went under... good that they are still active. The club closed though, right?

What is up with that cover? A pictorial representation of a cat's fart? -
Michael Cuscuna - King of the Reissues
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Brad's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I've still never hard the Trainwreck, but I have heard several other unissued Blue Note dates and I agree with you that Michael is being too harsh on some of these dates. Yes, there are warts, but to state that they're all unissued "for a very good reason" is going too far in my estimation. For instance, I think that Blakey's Jazz Messengers recording from 1959 could be released with some judicious editing, and I've never even heard all the takes. Sure, it would take some track splicing and maybe some synchronization trickery, but with today's music editing programs, probably doable. They do much more with today's modern pop songs. AutoTune anyone? Ike Quebec's date with Grant Green is different story. I don't think that one is worthy of putting out even though Grant Green plays pretty well on most of it. Truth be told, they all sound wasted to me, much like that Dexter Gordon/Sonny Stitt date that they issued one track from ("Oh, Lady Be Good" on that Lost Sessions Connoisseur CD). -
Mosaic Dial set coming soon
Kevin Bresnahan replied to miles65's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
For those of you contemplating a last minute purchase. I've re-read this thread and noticed that I declared that I would pass. I'm going to pass (again). I do like the music but all these false starts and alternates would just drive me nuts. -
Many people are angry because Cosby got away with this for so long. If he had gotten arrested and jailed after the first one, there would be a lot less anger and at least 35 more women who might not have been raped.

Michael Cuscuna - King of the Reissues
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Brad's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
"After 40 years of doing Blue Note, there's still a few things unissued and believe me, they're unissued for a very good reason". I guess we can forget about that Tyrone Washington. -

FS: Verve Stuff Smith Mosaic Box Set
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Face of the Bass's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I did talk to Michael Cuscuna about this back when this set was deleted and I seem to remember that they went to re-press the CDs and the label denied their request. This is why it went out of print almost instantly. As to why the were denied, I can't remember right now. -
I saw Frank live several times and thoroughly enjoyed his playing. Over the years, I've picked up many of his recordings like "Autumn", "Chant", "Play", "Rumors" and "Lullabluebye"... see a trend? I'm surprised that this CD isn't simply titled "Monk"? I have no doubt that Kimbrough can do justice here. Just listen to the title track of his recording, "Lullabluebye" to hear him play in a style very reminiscent of Monk on a tune he composed. I think he'll do fine here.

Brach's Halloween Candy
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Where are Brach's candy corn being made these days? Last year, all of the name brands in the local grocery store were made in Mexico. -
Dan Morgenstern on Hawk
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Brad's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
He seems to have fixed his error with the exception of still using the wrong LP cover art down at the bottom. EDIT: Oh wait, you're right that he still refers to the wrong catalog numbers for this Milestone two-fer. -

October 2004 Connoisseur Release (Proposed)
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Re-issues
I was down in Orlando many years ago and planned to see Sam Rivers with his orchestra and I just got too tired so I skipped it. I never got to see Sam. From what I was later told, Sam might not have been there anyway so I take so solace in that. Still bums me out that I missed his *band* too. BTW - if you click the little dot (or star if you've posted in it) next to the thread title, it'll bring you to the first unread post and you'll avoid seeing JohnS's post #1.
