I think my aversion to "happy birthday" for those who have moved on started when my dad died suddenly back in 2006. I just know that he isn't having a "happy" anything anymore. No matter - I do miss Hiroshi's E-mails. He was a nice guy. I always thought that if I ever got to visit Japan, his store would have been a place to visit. I'm a bit bummed that I still haven't gotten there.

My Facebook feed is telling me that today is Hiroshi's birthday. I don't think it's appropriate to post "Happy Birthday" to a dead person. Clearly, "happy" is out the window. Instead, I'll just say that I am missing Hiroshi on the anniversary of his birth.

Just finished - Kenny Burrell - On View At The Five Spot Cafe (US CD with bonus tracks) Now playing - Michael Hashim - The Billy Strayhorn Project - Lotus Flower (Stash). Great stuff here. Too bad Hashim never made it to a major label. He is quite the player. Great band too: Hashim on alto & soprano, Mike Ledonne at the piano, Dennis Irwin walking the bass & Kenny Washington in the drum chair.

Weird News Tonight (or Today!!!!!)
Kevin Bresnahan replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I've had several artists tell that they are stuck with piles of CDs these days because no one seems to be buying them. It was actually pretty sad because the guy had about 50 CDs of various titles he'd made over the years and I was the only one buying any from him that night. I do it mostly to support them because I know they aren't getting rich from what they're getting paid for the gig. And FWIW, the artists that bring LPs don't seem to be selling them either, so it's not just CD that's the problem. I saw James Carter at Scullers and he had two LP titles with him and I think I saw one person buy one of them. He did sell quite a few CDs that night though. -
Noah Preminger - Ballads (Chill Tone Records). I bought the white vinyl for the heck of it (it comes with a download card too).

Sounds like you might be the new "Blue Note whisperer". -
Kenny Burrell - On View At The Five Spot Cafe (Complete?)

I like the music, so more music from that night is good enough for me, especially when it has Tina Brooks on it. I just don't like the fact that they are advertising this as complete when it is clearly not complete. When they released the complete Lee Morgan performance at the Lighthouse, it was actually all of the music recorded those nights, so they do know what "complete" means. As for why I don't want to try and contact anyone at Blue Note, well, my latest attempts to contact them have not gone anywhere, so I don't feel like trying anymore. I was honest when I told you to give it a try. Maybe it's just me that they don't respond to? -

Go for it... I've pretty much given up on trying to get any answers from them. -
Kenny Burrell - On View At The Five Spot Cafe (Complete?)

It kinda irks me that they call this "complete" and include tracks that were previously deemed "rejected", yet there are clearly a bunch of other rejected tracks not being reissued. Blue Note needs to make up their mind - either release it all (complete) or don't call it complete. -

That said, I have to wonder if "rejected" here means that they simply chose a different take as is the case for "Birks' Works", "Lady Be Good" & "36-23-36"? -

I really like this CD so I will be buying the new 2-CD set for sure. There were 5 unreleased tracks with Tina Brooks. All are listed as "rejected". All of them are alternates of tunes already released. -
Blue Note's latest "secret society" email announced an upcoming reissue. >>>>>>>>> Blue Note Announcement <<<<<<<<< Kenny Burrell With Art Blakey "On View At The Five Spot Café: The Complete Masters" We’re excited for Tone Poet Society members to be the first to know about the April 11 release of On View At The Five Spot Café: The Complete Masters, a special expanded Tone Poet Vinyl Edition of guitarist Kenny Burrell’s 1959 hard bop summit with drummer Art Blakey! The 3-LP, 2-CD & digital sets present the complete recorded performances from that evening for the first time in any format including 6 previously unissued tracks. Today, we’re offering Tone Poet Society members only the chance to pre-order the set exclusively on the Blue Note Store >>>>>>>> end of Blue Note Announcement <<<<<<<< According to Michael Cuscuna/Michel Ruppli's discography, there were only 5 "unissued" tunes left in the can, so we're likely to be getting at least one tune that was originally deemed "rejected". The 5 unissued tunes are: from set 1 The Next Time You See Me, Things Won't Be The Same from set 2 Lover Man from set 3 The Take Off from set 4 Our Delight The Next Time You See Me, Things Won't Be The Same Among the rejected song titles are few that are unique and several that would be alternates. The unique/previously unissued songs that show as "rejected" are: Tricotism The Take Off/36-23-36 (a different take is listed above as an "unissued" tune) The Next Time You See Me, Things Won't Be The Same (two different takes also listed above as "unissued" tunes) If You Could See Me Now Love Walked In All other "rejected" tunes would be alternates of previously issued tunes on the US CD & SACD releases. FWIW, I think "The Take Off" is a variation on "The Theme", played at the end of the sets because it is listed as "36-23-36/Theme" as the 5th set closer.

What live music are you going to see tonight?
Kevin Bresnahan replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Westbrook is 88, so it's understandable if he's slowing down a bit. -
Not a joke per se, but I thought this was pretty funny. Watch it to the end...

I really like this CD. I'll have to pull it out again.

Gerry Mulligan - Night Lights (Philips) Followed by: Gerry Mulligan & Ben Webster – Gerry Mulligan Meets Ben Webster (MFSL).

Corea's widow is as deep into that group as he was. -
At least it's not in his lap as he drives down the highway like I see a lot of idiots doing these days.

Chick Corea's record collection auction

I think we need to cut out the religion talk. I know Jim A wants these forums clear of politics and religion so I'll stick to that. It's why I didn't mention the group that I expect this auction will benefit. -
Chick Corea's record collection auction
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I honestly don't think I could bid on any of these with good conscience. Knowing Chick, I'm sure a large portion of the proceeds from this sale are going to a group that I just don't want to support in any shape or form. -
Mario Pavone - Song For (Septet) (New World Records). Mario Pavone, bass; Thomas Chapin, alto sax, flute; Bill Ware, vibes; Peter Madsen, piano; Peter McEachern, trombone; Steve Johns, drums. Every time I spin this, I wonder why I don't spin more frequently. You can hear it on bandcamp and if you like it, you can buy it today (2/7) when 100% of bandcamp's profits go to benefit those suffering hardships from the LA fires.

It has been reported that board member Claude Schlouch has died at age 83. Claude was well known for his discographies of Kenny Dorham and Bud Powell and he shared that knowledge with us regularly. I will miss seeing his posts. This is all I could find for a notice: https://www.libramemoria.com/defunts/schlouch-claude/07d95cda5782466190b8425667ff1a3c

Chick Corea's record collection auction
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
The value of this particular record from Chick's personal collection is 100% due to that personalized autograph. I'd love to own it myself.
