What vinyl are you spinning right now??
Kevin Bresnahan replied to wolff's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
If you read his Wiki entry, his downward career path was probably due to his addictions, rather than bad luck. He died at 38 from cirrhosis. -
I was at the Up/Over Jazz Cafe for one of the nights James recorded enough music for two self-released CDs, "Blues Up And Over Vol. 1" & "Round To It Vol. 2". I was pretty excited to hear these CDs, as I remember that night being pretty fantastic. I bought "Blues Up And Over" right away, but to this day, I have never found a CD copy of "Round To It" and missed this thread back in 2005. I see that James is now offering a download of "Round To It". It's a bit steep (as downloads go) at $18, but I may have to bite the bullet to finally re-hear this music. https://jamesspaulding.bandcamp.com/album/round-to-it

The entire "Heavy Metal" soundtrack isn't really a bunch "heavy metal" musicians, so Blue Oyster Cult fits fine. From the track listing, maybe Black Sabbath fits the bill, but most of the others are "What the heck are they doing on there?" musicians. Donald Fagen? Cheap Trick? Stevie Nicks? Devo? Sammy Hagar – Heavy Metal Riggs – Heartbeat Devo – Working In The Coal Mine Blue Öyster Cult – Veteran Of The Psychic Wars Cheap Trick – Reach Out Don Felder – Heavy Metal (Takin' A Ride) Donald Fagen – True Companion Nazareth – Crazy (A Suitable Case For Treatment) Riggs – Radar Rider Journey – Open Arms Grand Funk Railroad – Queen Bee Cheap Trick – I Must Be Dreamin' Black Sabbath – The Mob Rules Don Felder – All Of You Trust – Prefabricated Stevie Nicks – Blue Lamp

This is really good. The two of them did 3 recording dates for Hep, released on 2 CDs, this and "Green & Blue". These dates were Mazurek's last hard bop dates. I don't think he plays in that style anymore.

I got this one in and spun it last night. It's definitely "Italian restaurant music". It does break out into some jazzier sections but it's mostly not. I still like it for what it is.

Two doctors were sitting on a park bench when they noticed an older man walking at them all hunched over with a stiff, shuffling gait. When he walks past their bench, one of the doctors said, "We noticed your're having trouble walking. I was thinking you might have something wrong with your hip. My colleague here thinks it's your back". The man stopped and said, "I guess we're all wrong then. I thought it was a fart".

Hershey used to make everything in Hershey, PA. These days, not so much. All of their "minis" are made in Mexico, including the mini Reese's peanut butter cups. Many of their novelty bars, like the jumbo Reese's PB cups, are also made in Mexico. All York Peppermint Paddies are made in Mexico. For a long time, all Hershey kisses were made in PA but there seems to be some variation to that. BTW - we will never know where much of their chocolates are made because the US has never required any food product to be labeled with a country of origin. It's even worse with M&M/Mars products as they hide where all of their products are made. At least Hershey labels some of their products for us.

I really like this one.

Victor Goines - Genesis (A.F.O. Records). I don't remember buying this or the last time I played it... I wonder if I bought it directly from Victor years ago after a set?

I also ordered this one from that label:

I ordered a copy of both of these CDs. The Barron one sounds particularly interesting. I got it here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1883914361 Also here: https://www.amazon.com/Table-Menus-Music®-Gift-Boxed/dp/B001KK28XQ

Covid Still Sucks
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
PIM - I know someone who had a serious ear infection and they had to drain his ears for him to recover his hearing. Did they drain your ears too? My youngest daughter got Covid again earlier this week. She was pretty sick for about 4 days. Today is the first day she's trying to go without meds. Covid still sucks. -
MartyJazz hasn't posted since 2018. Does anyone know if he's still around?

Here's where it was "released": https://menusandmusic.com/collections/musiccooks/products/the-cocktail-hour

Lee Morgan - Blues For Mr. Tatum. This is some good boogaloo. Don't mind my crappy artwork. I am not Reid Miles or Patrick Roques.

Cannonball Adderley - Somethin' Else (Blue Note). I'm spinning the SHM-CD (TYCJ-81002) that has two bonus tracks, including an alternate of "Autumn Leaves". I think this CD sounds very good and I find myself playing it more often than the MFSL gold CD and the AP SACD.

When Galaxy/Fantasy licensed the Atlas sessions with Art Pepper for their box set, "Hollywood All-Star Sessions" in 2001, the licensing blurb on the back said, "Licensed from APMCORP", which could very well be Atlas Polydor. Discogs isn't always accurate either.

What live music are you going to see tonight?
Kevin Bresnahan replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Steve - I know you're into this, but... nope. This is not something that I would ever want to see/hear live. -
Atlas Records is a Japanese label so these titles are probably only licensed for sale in Japan. Discogs does not say that Atlas Records is part of the Polydor family of labels. They list their parent company as Yupiteru Industry Co., Ltd, another Japanese company.

Computer Gurus: New Browser?
Kevin Bresnahan replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I hear stories about Chrome sending personal files to them but I've never read a technical paper detailing this as real. They do track your on-line travels and sell that info. It's how they make their money. You agree to this when you install it. They are not alone in this. Chrome also has tools bundled into the browser to prevent malware & spyware intrusions and to be honest, a lot of everyday PC users need that "invisible" protection because they aren't capable of doing it themselves. How do I know this? Since I retired, I started doing tech support at my local senior center and I see a lot of people who aren't very careful on-line. I'm surprised at how many of them have been scammed over the years. They need built-in protection and Chrome, which is free, is better than nothing. Chrome may also be better than some of the paid anti-virus programs, which don't do much more than what Chrome does and can really cripple some Windows laptops. That said, I still use Firefox, mainly because it seems to run faster than other browsers. Truth be told, I also use laptops with Ubuntu/Linux, not Windows, so spyware/malware have not been a problem at all. -
I loved his performance in "Let It Ride", a movie a watch every now & then. I was never a fan of the New York Dolls and I doubt that I'd recognize any of their songs if I heard them today but I know "Hot, Hot, Hot" as it's played at a lot of weddings.

I used to play "Healing The Pain" quite a bit when I got it. I always hoped to see him play but I don't think he toured by then. RIP Bunky.
