  1. If these upcoming releases in the UK were SACDs, I'd be ecstatic. As it is, I just bought these expensive CDs from Japan. I won't be buying them again. Oh how I wish these labels would put out more SACDs. Don't they realize it's an easy way to get new buyers? Just these 4 titles would get my money for SACDs... in a second. Later, Kevin
  2. Already done many, many times! My current favorite is Ike Quebec's "Ballads" but Stanley Turrentine's "Ballads" is a close second. And no, "A Love Supreme" is not romantic dinner music. Kevin
  3. Tonight I took my wife of 18 years out to a nice restaurant for a nice, quiet dinner to celebrate our anniversary. No kids, no mother-in-law. Just the two of us. We went to the Pond View Restaurant in Plaistow, NH. Nice ambiance for a romantic dinner. So, we're sitting there looking at menu and I start hearing Miles' trumpet playing "Autumn Leaves" from Cannonball's "Something Else". Nice appetizer music. As the evening wore on, I heard some Sarah with Brownie, some Long Tall Dexter and even some Basie. I made it a point to go find the maitre'd to compiment their musical selections. I can't remember the last time I had good music to go with good food in a nice relaxed atmosphere. Later, Kevin
  4. I'm not "overeacting"... just "reacting". I was knocked out of my chair by Brookmeyer's stance, and believe me, a lot of people tried calmy discussing his dissing of a majority of the Jazz Corner posters. His wouldn't take back one word. A lot of people were caught off guard. My reaction was "to heck with him". It was really pretty strange. I wish the whole thing was still around but I believe a lot of it got deleted. Things weren't helped when DEEP jumped in and stirred it up by basically blasting anyone who tried calling out Bob for insulting everyone. And if what he said to us wasn't being a "jerk", I'd like to hear a better word. Look, he is a very well-versed musician who knows the ins & outs of writing and arranging for large and small groups. He's a pro's pro. I have utmost respect for his abilities in this regard. However, the way he treated me personally is why I don't buy his stuff. As for others in the Jazz field, I have no doubt... none at all... that many of the artists in my music collection are/were jerks. However, none of them did anything to me personally. Hey, since the subject of this thread is to try and get a Jazz reissue some good press, I'll drop it. I really just wish that Bob Belden had chosen a different artist to push, that's all. And my reasons are personal, not professional. Later, Kevin
  5. Don't judge my comment as "stupid" unless you know what you're talking about. Bob Brookmeyer used to post over at Jazz Corner. He basically told everyone who wasn't a Jazz musician to stop posting there. His attitude was, if you aren't a Jazz musician, you have no right to be writing about it. He stated it several times and never backed off his opinion. Since he thinks so highly of my opinion, I have witheld the contents of my wallet from him since. I may still buy this because I like what Bob Belden has done for Jazz and I respect what he's trying to do here. I do not respect Bob Brookemeyer at all. And for the record, I buy hundreds of dollars a month of all types of Jazz, reissues and new artists, both vinyl and CD. I am not "part of the problem" wih regards to Jazz CD sales! Later, Kevin
  6. If you're interested in this Mike LeDonne CD from Cellar Door, I'd E-mail Cory soon. The response I got from him seemed to indicate that he would never be able to run another pressing of this disc because of legalities. It's worth E-mailing him to see if he gets any returns. He's trying to get me a copy now. Later, Kevin
  7. Why couldn't Belden pick another artist to pimp for? Brookmeyer's a jerk and I don't like supporting him. I might buy this just because Belden asked but it would never be for Brookmeyer's benefit. Later, Kevin
  8. Popping sounds are usually electrical surges. Your guess that the power supply failed is a good one. However, if your machine has any built-in surge circuitry, and it's likely, there has probably been a fuse or trip that has to be reset. There could also be more damage to you machine than just the power supply. Don't drop too much money on this machine. It could turn out that the whole thing is fried. I wouldn't even buy a new motherboard. If all else fails, pull the hardrive out of this puppy and toss it in a dumpster. You can get refurbished Celeron Dells for less than $300 that will likely beat it out for speed. Just go to http://outlet.us.dell.com/Dispatcher?targe...414104&tgtSeg=I and check out the prices. Beats the heck out of de-bugging power problems. Later, Kevin
  9. I still have my vinyl copy. It's one of the very few LPs I kept during the "great purge" of the 80's. I played it the other day and I still think the CD version I have sounds much better. I think the reason so many people got sick of this title is because FM radio stations played it non-stop. well, that and the fact that the songs' lyrics make you want to jump off a bridge! Oh yeah, and it accompanied a truly twisted and crappy movie. Anybody ever visit this page? Someone went through the trouble to put up the secret message (forward and backward). I never realized it was "Chalfont". I thought it was "Chelmsford", but then again, I had to rely on spinning the LP in reverse. Hard to get good fidelity that way! Later, Kevin
  10. Rumors are strong that Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" will be coming out on SACD by early next year. This would be fantastic as it's my favorite session and one that could sound awesome in multi-channel. Like "Dark Side of the Moon", it too was released as a quadraphonic LP back in the 70's. However, unlike "Dark Side of the Moon", "Wish You Were Here" was recorded in quad! I imagine that if they use those original quad masters, we'll be in for a sonic treat! Am I the only one who digs "The Wall"? Sometimes I think so. Maybe it's because it was released during my senior year of high school? Maybe it's because "Comfortably Numb" is such a phenomenal song? Whatever... you have to like a band that puts a secret message in a song called "Empty Spaces". Later, Kevin
  11. I think Jim made it clear that he would prefer not to have solicitations for illegal material here on Organissimo. Kevin
  12. I was listening to Barron's "Hot Line" this morning on the way to work and I was once again reminded at how much I dig this date. Barron has such a unique sound to my ears. I just can't pin it down. He has that way of bending notes like a cat mewing a la Dexter Gordon (which could probably be described as the "Lester Young School") but he seems to twist the sound a certain way. One of the things I like the most is that Barron seems to get Booker Ervin to modify his usual solo style on a couple of tunes. Yeah, Booker gets stuck in his patented crying mode but he also does some unusual (for him) twisting around the beat, particualrly on the opening tune, "Bill's Boogie". It's a very nice tune. I assume this date takes place very early on in brother Kenny's career because Bill doesn't give Kenny a whole lot of solo space and, is it me, or does the piano sound "off"? Of the other two rhythm players, for some reason I dig Larry Ridley's playing more than anyone. This may go down in history... I actually dig the bass player more than the piano or drummer. Andrew Cyrille seems to be a time-keeper here. Not a lot of accents and very little in the way of soloing. Anyway, Savoy should get this date out there for everyone to hear. It's definitely a good one. Later, kevin
  13. I figured maybe this thread needs some air to remond people of Jim's thoughts on this topic.
  14. Has anyone ever played "Dark Side of the Moon" while watching "The Wizrd of Oz"? That, to me, would be a real Pink Floyd fanatic. Of course, by my own definition, I would be excluded. I've often wondered how stoned one would have to get before all the "coincidences" between the music and what Dorothy does became apparent? I imagine if I got stoned enough, I could play any album and it would match up weirdly with the flying monkeys. BTW, does anyone know what song lines up with the flying monkeys? Kevin
  15. All this talk of illegal boots... am I the only guy who's never bought one? Every one I've ever heard sounded like crap. I'd much rather spin the real stuff. Kevin
  16. Are you sure they're Connoisseur LPs? Many of those titles have been showing up in stores around my area but they're not Connoisseur LPs but rather new reissues from the Scorpio pressing plant. They run around $10. Check the catalog number on the cover. I am almost positive that most Connoisseur LPs have different catalog numbers than the original LPs. The Scorpio LPs use the original catalog numbers. If they are Conoisseur LPs, $11-13 is cheap. They listed for $16-17 (same as the CDs) back in the day. Later, Kevin
  17. "Wish You Were Here" is a great rock and roll album. Time hasn't diminished my enjoyment of that disc. I have always liked it more than "Dark Side of the Moon"... sacriledge, I know. "Animals" is a different story entirely. I used to get totally stoned and listen to this album with headphones until all hours of the night. I don't get stoned any more, I really don't feel like listening with headphones and god forbid that I see "all hours of the night" unless I'm sitting on the toilet. I doubt I'll ever be able to get into "Animals" too much any more. I always loved the Lord's Prayer in "Sheep". He lays me down to die. He hangs from hooks in high places. Later, Kevin
  18. It is being reported over on Jazz Corner's Speakeasy that John Stubblefield lost his battle with prostate cancer and died yesterday, July 4th. I will always remember the joy he had on the bandstand. I saw him twice with the Mingus Big band and both times, he was the highlight. RIP John. The pain is gone now.
  19. I leave my machine on 24/7. Always have. I shut off the monitor when not in use. It could be because of this or I could be just lucky, but I've never had a hardrive fail. Of course, I frequently back up my data too. It never pays to ignore the possibility of something failing. I have read that the rapid movements that the hardive's mechanisms do during boot are the most stress it gets. Minimizing this by leaving the machine running may help increase the life. Kevin
  20. I was in the Media Play store in Enfield, CT yesterday, and I was walking by this huge section of 99 cent CDs. It's all crap... I've wasted my time plowing through these huge piles before and it's never gotten me anywhere. Well, as I walked by, I see the name "James Clay". Hmmm, I wonder if this is that Clay date everyone was talking about on Organissimo? For 99 cents, why not. James Clay's "I Let A Song Go Out Of My Heart". Excellent use of 99 Cents!!! I've spun it a couple of times. What a rhythm section! I can't understand why Antilles chose to not list them on the outside of the disc. It probably would have helped sales if people picked up the CD and saw Cedar Walton, David Williams and Billy Higgins listed there. I might have jumped in the air if I saw them listed. After finding this disc, of course I went through the entire section. It took me about 30 minutes. The only other Jazz disc was a weird Sonny Stitt called "Just Friends". No info. I played it and got intrigued by the 3 tunes with a bone player. Turns out it a Catalyst date with Frank Rosolino that was issued under the name "I Remember Bird". I gotta get that CD. The other three tunes were from the Catalyst session with Red Holloway. I already had those. So one hit, one miss. But at 99 cents each... very good. All in all, a pretty good day. I also found an oop James Williams Sunnyside CD called "Progress Report". Happy 4th of July everyone, Kevin
  21. Jazzhound is such a poor advocate for solid state amplification... Oh hounded one, even though I agree with you that solid state sounds better than tubes, many people do not agree with us. Why not just let them like what they like and leave it at that? BTW, the initial premise of this thread, that a pre-amp blew a speaker, sounds plausible to me. It doesn't matter whether that pre-amp is solid state or tubed. If it blows and sends a large spike to the amp, that amp could send it to the speaker. It'd likely blow the amp in the process too, as is the case here. BTW II, Linn amps are usually pretty reliable. I would definitely get your pre-amp checked out before hooking your system back up. You might find that the reason your amp blew is because of the pre-amp. Later, Kevin
  22. Robert, for any editing of music files, you have to copy them off the CD and onto your hardrive. It's usually called "extracting" the files. If you simply copy them onto your hardrive, you'll wind up with .cda files that are about 2 kB each, not .WAV files that are about 50-100 MB each. You have to have a program that will do this. I use EZ CD Creator. As someone else pointed out, Exact Audio Copy http://www.eac.de can do this too. However, EAC is very poorly documented and it is a chore to use. When you get it working, it's great. However, I have found it takes a long time to extract .WAV files off of CD-R discs. Kevin
  23. Audacity is pretty simple for what you're trying to do. Highlight the chunk of the audio you want, then click the "Edit" menu and click "Copy". Next, open a new window in Audacity and then hit Edit>paste. It's as simple as editing a word document. After you paste that music into the new window, do a file "Export as wave", give it a name. Done. I found Audactiy to be simple to use. I used it to create some mp3 ringtones for my cell phone. I made one from the intro to "So What" and another with Shorter's solo on "Free For All". Kevin
  24. Colin, I tried warning you... this place just doesn't have a lot of people who dig high rez formats. They have great appreciation for the music, but the percentage that own a high rez player is probably down in the single digits. I think you're beating a dead horse. Personally, I hear immense benefits when I listen to SACD. My favorites are the Analogue Productions titles. Great music with "you are there" sound. I'm baffled why more people here don't dig it (DrJ excluded... him & I have discussed this and his reasons are his reasons... we don't have to agree). However, I am resigned to the fact that the lack of support for high rez, for whatever reason, have likely killed them for all but small, esoteric labels (just like LPs). I'll still buy 'em, but I expect the releases will stop. It'll be a sad day when it happens. BTW, one thing I've noticed about your writings here is that you use irony & sarcasm. Neither of these is obvious in written word. You could avoid misunderstandings if you use those dreaded smiley faces. You might get a warmer welcome. Later, Kevin
