  1. Is this what you were looking for? No, Jim, John's comment came later on in the thread. I believe the Doodlin' link at the beginning of the thread actually said how he was killed but in looking at it now, it doesn't mention it any more. I believe the link used to go to an "update" page but I can't find this update anywhere on that website. Maybe Jim can contact Pete Fallico? Kevin
  2. What happened to the story that was originally linked here? I could have sworn it talked about finding out how Baby Face died. I was talking to Michael Cuscuna about Baby Face and he was saying that he was thinking about a Mosaic Select and he'd like to include this info in the liners. Kevin
  3. I had 19 titles in my queue and now I'm down to 3! Luckily, they did this after they shipped my latest queued-up CD. I don't even think I can remember all of the titles I had in there. Kevin
  4. If you want a good sample from the set, pick up "The Jimmy Giuffre 3" on Atlantic. If you like that, there's a good chance you'd like the whole set. I like this CD, but certainly not enough to justify the cost of the Mosaic box. It's one of the few I took a pass on. No regrets (yet). BTW, another very good date is a two-fer on ECM called "Jimmy Giuffre 3, 1961". I think I like the Atlantic a bit more but it's still very good. Kevin
  5. I caught two songs last night on my drive home and man, did it sound great! Awesome job, Steve. The bass was very nicely captured. Congrats to the guy who set up the sound. I was wondering how to spell the leader's name. Now I know. Kevin
  6. Look, it's clearly not legal. If it was even remotely legit, I'd be all over it. There are artists who encouraged tape trading and I thought this website was for that. It's almost the exact opposite. My reasons for staying away is that these websites have and will continue to be targeted by the legal-eagles. They'll go to court, get an injunction, get your ISP to fork over your account info (which Verizon does with very little provocation) and next thing you know, they're knocking at my door with a subpeona. I'll avoid that... thanks, but no thanks. Kevin
  7. Is this site for legal downloads? I can't see any information about what it has without registering (and I don't want to register if it's a bootleg joint). Kevin EDIT: Nevermind... I'll pass on this place. It's all bootlegged material. BTW, they try to cover their asses by listing bands who have specifically asked to be excluded. Legally, it's the other way around! More humor in their FAQ: Is this site legal? This site is merely a tracker. No files are hosted on this site. The tracker also has no way of checking the contents of any files which it tracks - it merely records the hash ID and the IP addresses of users connected to each particular torrent. It is your responsibility to check that the content of the files which you download is legal in your locality.
  8. Well, I finally got sunmusic.com to cancel my order and authorize BidPay to credit my account. Of course, it took a threat to post negative feedabck here to get them to respond. It's been two weeks since I last heard from them. I threaten to give them a black mark and "voila", an E-mail in less than an hour. So, I guess you could say that all's well that ends well, but I know I won't be using sunmusic.com again. Kevin
  9. I remember seeing Marchel play at a now-defunct Dallas club called "The Jazz Connection" back in the mid-90's. I think Joey D was on the organ. I bet there were 6 people in there, max. Too bad because they missed a burnin' set that night. I went because of Joey but sat amazed at Ivery. I bought one of his Leaning House Jazz CDs that night. I also saw him at the Addison Jazz club (Sambuca's?) where the planes take off and the their lights come up behind the stage. First time it happens, it freaks you out. Once again, Ivery was on his game. There are only a few things I miss from my days on the road... seeing Marchel Ivery down in the Dallas area is one of them. Kevin
  10. Tired today... got back late last night. Christini's was awesome, with the perfect atmosphere and very tasty food. Weird location though, it's located in a strip mall. They said they were building a standalone restaurant that they planned to open in about two years. The meal plan turned out to be a blessing and a curse. It was certainly a bargain, money-wise. However, every meal comes with an appetizer, entree and dessert. Way too much food for me! As for Disney, my favorite "show" was Mickey's Philharmagic. Great 3D show. My favorite ride was one they were previewing (it officially opens May 5th) called Soarin'. It's a hang glider simulation, complete with smells. The Rock & Roll Rollercoater was a close second. Of course, you have to dig Aerosmith to really like this ride. The hotel was OK. The Port Orleans French Quarter was supposed to be Jazz-themed. The closest they came was naming the streets with cute names like "Jazz Alley". The live "Jazz" they had performed in their bar consisted of a solo act who played sax, guitar... well, pretty much every instrument... all accompanied by some keyboard with pre-recorded rhythm. Gack. When he broke out in "Rockin' Robin", I knew I had to vacate the area quickly. I never made it to see Sam Rivers. Too much going on that night. I also discovered that he was playing with his Rivbea Orchestra which is not really the way I wanted to see him so maybe it was better this way. Thanks everyone for the recommendations. If I could give one back, it's this: Go at least once. It was a great time. Kevin
  11. Well, you're screwed! Seriously, I did ask Michael what's the scoop on this date and he said Blue Note had no interest in picking it up. He didn't know if the Japanese would print more. The copy I got from him looks like it got stepped on but, hey, at least I got it. BTW, I finally talked to a real person at BidPay today. I tried a trick... I called the auotmated number and hit # about 20 times until it finally transferred me to a real, warm-bodied mammal. I now have a stop-payment request into Sun Music. Luckily, they haven't cashed the check yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Kevin
  12. Well, if anyone wants an update, here it is. I did get myself a copy. I never thought to ask the co-producer, Michael Cuscuna, if he could get me a copy. It turns out he had an extra so I now have it. As for Sun Music, boy, was this a mistake! No response from them in over a week. Even worse, I created a BidPay account to pay for my CDs and now that Sun Music won't respond, I've been trying to put a stop payment on it to no avail. They haven't replied to any E-mails. Quite frankly, their "customer service", which is some automated web page, sucks. There is no way to talk to a real person. Kevin
  13. I can call them about it someday when I get a chance but didn't I read somewhere that these non-Mosaic Farlow sets are from Europe? If this is true and they are from Europe, then sure, they're technically illegal in the US because Mosaic holds the exclusive rights to sell this set here. BTW, Mosaic still makes money off those sets too. I think the only reason they are cheaper here in the US right now is because of the strong Euro. This scenario is nowhere near what's happening with these LA-area dealers. The European Farlow sets are legit, just not being sold where they're supposed to be sold. Not apples to apples. Kevin
  14. This is not related to my reasons for not buying these sets. As I said, these sets are taking revenue from Mosaic. Sure, someone else will probably buy the set that I decide not to buy but then if Mosaic goes out of business, I won't have to wonder if I was "part of the problem". Look, I can only do what I think is right for me. You do what you want. My only reason for posting to this thread in the first place was simply to let people know that these are not legit. People can choose to buy them or not. Kevin
  15. I just looked at the ebay link again and noticed that the seller lists the quantities available of each title. He has multiple copies of each. 15 copies available of the Pullen Select! 5 copies with no box/booklet for the Sarah Vaughn? No way a dealer buys that many without Mosaic knowing (and Mosaic does not sell without box/booklet). They'd probably even negotiate a discount for a big sale like this. It wouldn't be enough of a discount to allow them to sell it for $32 and still make a profit, though. I just can't see how this seller can be legit. Kevin
  16. Mosaic has been trying to plug this leak for years now. It's more than just a few promos. According to what I've been told, Mosaic thinks someone is grabbing full boxes of CDs. They are getting access to them before the get to EMI, and definitely before Mosaic gets them. That's why there is no box or booklet: Mosaic inserts the CDs in CT. Selects are shipped directly from the plant sealed. That's why these Selects are complete. As to why these CDs are on the docks at the corporate offices of EMI, yes, it is for EMI to do with them as they will (which likely includes giving out bunches as promos). But these particular sets never seem to make it into EMI in the first place. Mosaic can't account for them. My guess is someone on the docks at EMI's LA office is dropping them out the back door. Kevin
  17. Someone over on the Jazz Corner Speakeasy says the cause of death was a heart attack. I don't know where the poster got the info. Kevin
  18. The way this thread is going is exactly why I didn't post on it until today. I figured there would be some disagreement. Listen everyone, I posted what I posted for information only. Readers are free to do whatever they want with this information. I am making no value judgements, only stating facts. There's no need to start a big brew-ha-ha over it. As for how to know if these sets (and yes, this dealer responded to an E-mail saying he has mulitple copies) are legal, I can only report what I was told. Fact: Only Mosaic is licensed to sell this set now. Fact: Mosaic would have a record of this sale and for this particular dealer, there is no record. Yes, anyone could buy a bunch of sets from Mosaic and re-sell them, as Collector's Choice does, but if they want to stay in business, they would likely sell them at a higher price than Mosaic. If this dealer wants to sell these at a loss, hey, different story. I would also add that these dealers are certainly damaging Mosaic. Every set they sell is one less set that Mosaic sells. For this reason alone, disregarding the legalities, I wouldn't take advantage of this deal. I just could not screw my favorite record label like that. As for financial reasons, well, I am sympathetic to this... however, if you can't afford something, the best bet is to not buy it until the funds are available. That's how it works in my house. There are a lot of things I'd love to buy right now too. Kevin
  19. These Los Angeles area dealers are all getting their Mosaic CDs illegally. Someone in EMI's LA office is leaking them out by the box-full. It's been going on for years now. This dealer will probably say he got them from a legit wholesaler, but that wholesaler didn't acquire them legally because they're not available legally. Currently, only Mosaic has the license for these box sets. Just like Batvano of days passed, these sellers are picking up these sets that "fell off the truck" and selling them as legit copies. Mosaic tells me they are not legit. For the extra $7, my money's still going to Mosaic.
  20. Someone at another website has posted a link from a Danish news agency that Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen has died. RIP to the Great Dane. So young at only 58! 58 and yet it seems like he played with everyone. Kevin
  21. He's a guy who always typed with the "Caps lock" on. Basically, on the Internet, all caps is supposed to be the equivalent of shouting. Don't worry, Tom, they're just playing around. But you might want to take the caps lock off. Kevin
  22. Well, it's beginning to look like Sun Music isn't the best when it comes to customer service. I E-mailed them Monday to ask what was the status of my order. They replied that they haven't received payment. I forwarded the E-mail I got from BidPay telling them that payment was made. Since then, nothing. I wish they would just cancel the order so I can move on. Kevin
  23. I wonder why they say "Holland"? I guess the distributor may be out of Holland, but if they're the discs I have, they say, "Made In Germany" right on them. Lon, Mike, you'll like these. They did a nice job with these reissues. Kevin
  24. Those are the ones I have. They have showed up in some stores over here but I haven't looked in a while. I see where Crazy Jazz, out of the UK, has both for around $15 each, but I think I paid less than that. Kevin
  25. Mike, I'm looking at the liners now (I was at work when I typed my post above) and you're right, they didn't find out until after. It still must've been weird that day for them. They just finish recording basically a tribute album and the honoree happened to die just before they started recording? That'd give me the willies. The info on the CDs I have is: Sphere - Four In One - Electra Masters - Warner Jazz - Made in Germany Catalog Number: 7559-62601-2 UPC code: 75596 26012 1. Four In One (Monk) 6:53 2.
