  1. Those are the ones I have. They have showed up in some stores over here but I haven't looked in a while. I see where Crazy Jazz, out of the UK, has both for around $15 each, but I think I paid less than that. Kevin
  2. Mike, I'm looking at the liners now (I was at work when I typed my post above) and you're right, they didn't find out until after. It still must've been weird that day for them. They just finish recording basically a tribute album and the honoree happened to die just before they started recording? That'd give me the willies. The info on the CDs I have is: Sphere - Four In One - Electra Masters - Warner Jazz - Made in Germany Catalog Number: 7559-62601-2 UPC code: 75596 26012 1. Four In One (Monk) 6:53 2. Light Blue (Monk) 3:38 3. Monk's Dream (Monk) 5:58 4. Evidence (Monk) 5:59 5. Reflections (Monk) 5:58 6. Eronel (Monk) 6:53 Sphere - Flight Path - Electra Masters - Warner Jazz - Made in Germany Catalog Number: 7559-62602-2 UPC code: 75596 26022 1. If I Should Lose You (Robin/Rainger) 10:31 2. Pumpkins' Delight (Charlie Rouse) 6:40 3. Played Twice (Monk) 4:30 4. El Sueño (Kenny Barron) 5:27 5. Christina (Dedicated To Buster William's Niece) (Buster Williams) 4:47 6. Flight Path (Kenny Barron) 4:45
  3. The first two Sphere dates on Electra are in print from Europe in digipaks. I was able to pick up both. According to the liner notes, the first was recorded on the day Monk died. They were in the studio recording when the word came in that Monk was gone. That must have been surreal. Kevin
  4. I talked to Cuscuna about this a few years back and I seem to remember that Lester's LRC reissues have gotten him in legal trouble with EMI. It doesn't seem to stop him from continuing releasing stuff on LRC that he no longer has the rights to. I agree that the Benny Golson date is a good one. FWIW, Blue Note put out a live 2 CD set (now oop) listed under Dizzy Gillespie's name that LRC still has in print, I think, called "Live at the Village Vanguard". It may be under Chick Corea's name on LRC. It's a pretty nice date. I'm pretty sure the Blue Note set had extra material but it's still worth picking up the edited LRC. Kevin
  5. My order status still says "Pending" and has since the day I placed the order. So, Reinier, if this order doesn't go through, what'll take to get that? Kevin
  6. Caveat Emptor with West Wind. Every time I've bought one of their releases, it turned out to a repackaged date I already had. They got me with Sonny Clark's "Blues Mambo" and another time with a Pepper Adams (?) date. I would look at the tunes and personnel carefully. You may have this on another (more legitimate) label. BTW, if I recall, sound quality wasn't stellar and since this is a live date, I would expect less. Kevin
  7. Mike, I came very close to mentioning this date myself but it isn't reall easy to find these days. I have it on Charly two-fer. I do like that one a lot. Is the Japanese 24 bit version of this still in print? Kevin
  8. I didn't know Rouse played with Rollins or Coltrane?
  9. Good choices. The live stuff from Stockholm is currently available from the Monk family's private label. That DIW set is impossible to find... believe me, I looked! I really like this set and I thank John Litwack for turning me onto it. I'm a huge Charlie Rouse fan. I actually prefer his work away from Monk where he gets to do his own thing. Make sure you get that sampler of his Epic label output. I think it's called "Oh Yeah!". If vinyl is your thing, this material was recently reissued. On CD, the Japanese Epic's released in their "Mastersound" series sound phenomenal. Kevin
  10. I had to bump Ellington's "Piano in the Background" up to the top of my queue last month because they were deleting it from their catalog. I still have "Piano in the Foreground" in my queue and I haven't gotten any notices on that. Kevin
  11. I picked up a copy of this for a fellow board member. He still has it. I'll let him know you're looking for this. Kevin
  12. Just so everyone knows, all of Renee's CDs, with the exception of the first two, are available at her website. Some of them are oop in the US. $16, including shipping and it's autographed. I highly recommend "For the Moment". Joe Henderson plays beautifully on this. I think my favorite leader-date of her's is "As We Are Now". As a sideman, or sidewoman in this case, she shines on JJ Johnson's "Heroes". I also like her on a little-known Soul Note CD from drummer Klaus Suonsaari called "Inside Out". Walt Weiskopf's "Anytown" (Criss Cross) is also worth seeking out, although more so for Weiskopf than Renee... it's just a very good CD with Renee's contributions. Looking at Renee's discography, I see several CDs on my want list. I should look to fill those one of these days. Kevin
  13. Edit: Not a good thing to post someone else's mug on a "Show Us Your Face" thread. My mistake.
  14. I went out with Doug twice... weren't you with us when we went to that microbrewery? Oh well, I thought it was you. Apologies to whomever it is I forgot! Kevin
  15. Yup, jazzshrink was "analyzing" that show. Kevin
  16. I'll be damned if I can remember all the people I met at the various hangs I've been to. I definitely remember the New York hang with Blue Note's Tom Evered and that drive in Dmitry's car! It was filled with us board members. Hmm... trying to remember... Jazzshrink - my buddy mike casinghino Jazzkitten Big Wheel John L (had a blast in Bourdeux with John and his wife) Christiern (even though he can't remember our meeting ) makpjazz57 (Marla) Stereojack ADR (? - not sure if this is Doug's user name) .:.Impossible (? if he is the Cary that used to live in Charlotte area) Shawn (? Again, if it's who I think he is - also from my Charlotte hang) Bertrand Dmitry Al in NYC (? I think that's who was sitting in that booth with Tom Evered that time) Dr Dave Gary Sisco (member here but never posted - lots of posts at JC) Pete C Steve Reynolds stevebop There are likely others but I just can't tell from the usernames. I have enjoyed talking with many posters. Lon and I have chatted quite a bit... in fact, I have to give him a call one of these days. I had a nice chat with Jim Sangrey back when he was having trouble with Blue Note's board (and don't worry Jim, any disagreements we had over that "thread deletion" spat is ancient history). I spoke with Weizen a couple of times. We have so many common interests and taste that his poilitcal leanings still blow my mind... which is why I totally avoid the politics threads... I like the guy and don't need a reason to think otherwise. I have spoken and still do speak ocassionally with "the DEEP one, Danny D'Imperio. We trade rare tapes. I still owe him something. I should get to that one of these days. I plan to meet Trumpet Guy soon. We have some wine to share. I think my buddy from Taipei is here somewhere but I can't find his name. Later, Kevin
  17. Well, it's beginning to look bleak for my sunmusic order. The order status is still showing as "pending" and the "Tenor Time" CD is now listed as "Out Of Print". Will it show? Did I get the last copy or did relyles? I may still be "in the hunt" for this... Kevin
  18. So, it looks like we're going to take Jim's advice and get the meal plan. Thanks for that info, Jim. The "travel agent" who booked us obviously didn't know how to save us a few bucks with that. I called to book it and she sounded exasperated, like, "You're gonna make me work, again". Since we do want to go to one of the "Signature" places one night, Joanne & I are going to go to try Christini's another night, probably Monday. Kinda steep but this vacation is already very steep so what's a few more $$? Thanks for that link, catesta. I found out that Sam Rivers is playing at a weekly Wednesday night gig at a downtown bar called Wills Pub. First set kicks off at 10... hmmm... might work. Thanks everyone. Kevin
  19. I recently downloaded Musicmatch's latest released version, Ver. 10.0. Installed it. Looks nice. Rips mp3s at 10X too. Good stuff, right? I was in the middle of a project for my daughter, ripping all of her Now 2, Now 3, etc. CDs, right up to Now 18, for burning to CD-R for our upcoming vacation. Better to bring two packed CD-Rs than 18 CDs. Well, prior to the upgrade, I had ripped Now 1-9. Everything was OK. Each track had a song title and an artist. After 10.0 was installed, I ripped Now 10-15 and then noticed that all of the tracks had been ripped to be from an artist named "Various Artists" . Playing the tracks showed this same text. Not very useful if you're playing back the mp3 in a portable player. I went to Musicmatch's website and saw where they are now claiming that it's not a problem and that they have no plans to fix it. So, every version up to 10.0 worked the same (and properly) but 10.0 does it different and they think it's fine? Well, I went and found an old version and installed that. No more Musicmatch upgrades for me. Kevin
  20. That wouldn't be too hard! That's the main reason I almost bought that Connoisseur LP, just to see if it sounded better than the old LT LP, which I thought sounded odd. If I remember right, the intruments were placed rather strangely across the two channels with a lot of them lumped into one. Kevin EDIT: I just dug out my LP of Dizzy Reece's "Blue In Trinity" (it was in a picture frame) and found out it's a "Larry", as in Larry Walsh.
  21. I have (had) my share of Mosaic partials. I have a partial Kenton that I found at a used shop. Well, all four discs were there, but I only wanted two of them. I have a partial Nat King Cole (10 discs) that isn't my cup of tea. I've tried selling it for list price for years with no luck. The one that's always bugged me was a partial Buck Clayton. I owned this set and let a guy at work borrow it. I wasn't worried, it was still in print. He loved it and was going to buy it. I told him to just keep mine and I'd order another during my next order. Guess what happened? It sold out. By the time I called, I got a partial. Only missing disc 3. Well, as fate would have it, discs 3 & 4 showed up at eBay last week and I was the winner. $20 and it's finally completed. Woo hoo. Does anyone need a disc 4? Kevin
  22. I thought these "Wally" titles sounded familiar. I looked in my pile and found that I have two, Andrew Hill's "Judgement!" and Dizzy Reece's "Blue In Trinity". I then realized why I thought these were going for around $10... these were issued in the Connoisseur & Rare Groove series... from digital masters. There was a big stink about this when it was discovered and afterward, most stores couldn't give them away. The vinyl afficiandos put their noses in the air at them. I can't tell you how many times I had that Hank Mobley "A Slice of the Top" in my hand, only to put it back down because I had heard it sounded lousy. I almost bought it just to see. It's good to see that some people played them before passing judgement on their sound. As for myself, I don't think I've even played either one. I bought them to get signed. Andrew Hill's autograph on "Judgement!" is pretty wild. Silver Sharpie across the black shadows. I'll have to give them a spin. Hell, I think the Reece disc is in a picture frame! Kevin
  23. Hmmm, are we sure about all this...? Heck, the copy I have sounds fabulous! Definitely. The master tape of "Sweet Honey Bee" as well as Silver's "The Jody Grind" are LP dubs. Cuscuna confirmed that a while ago. In fact, there was a lot of talk about the JRVG CD of "Sweet Honey Bee" as being "click-free". When RVG re-did that title, he didn't use the US master, but went back to the Japanese master to see if it was a tape dub (after getting hounded by me for a month! ). From what Michael said, it seems that the Japanese master is simply a cleaned-up needle-drop. Kevin
  24. I'm spinning Ronnie Matthews' "Legacy" (Bee Hive) now. Man, I wish Jim Neumann would put this stuff back out. Nice jam by all. I still haven't found a copy opf Sal Nistico's Bee Hive date. Kevin
