  1. CJ, a bit more info on the new one I mentioned above-it's called "Up For It",recorded in Antibes(not Italy)and is supposedly a sort of "greatest hits" set, plus 3 "new" pieces-Scrapple From The Apple,MJQ's "Two Degrees East..." and Jarrett's title track.Sounds like it might be one for you to get as more of an introduction. It's out on May 3rd here in the UK.
  2. As you're dipping your toe in the Jarrett ocean I may suggest getting Whisper Not ahead of the latest.Always Let Me Go is excellent but it does have its longeurs and there's nothing as stunning as "Riot" on it(why Eicher didn't put the full 20 minute plus version on Inside Out only he knows-I was there,it was spellbinding). Incidentally read a rumour recently that there's a new one out in May,recorded in Italy last year and consisting mainly of standards(I thought they'd be doing the freer stuff pretty much exclusively of late!).
  3. Whether Pat's playing in deference to an idol but I think Jim sounds the more adventurous of the two.Lovely set tho'.
  4. Like many of a certain age it was Metheny who provided a window into the world of jazz(Offramp blew me away when it came out)and I've stuck with him over the years even though perhaps the Group albums in particular don't thrill like they used too.The latest looked better on paper than it was,I would've liked to have heard Vu more intergrated into the ensemble(I'd imagine the live shows were better in this regard). I'll probably get the new one,but can't imagine I'll be playing it to death with its limited sound palette.I do hope however they get to release the live set from last year's Molde Festival in Norway, with Pat in a trio with Arild Andersen and Paal Nilssen Love-the guitarist has expressed a hope to put out the tape recorded by Norwegian Radio. And highly unlikely that it is,I'd love to hear the unreleased stuff from the Song X sessions, apparently even further out than the material than got issued. The trio sets do it for me most these days,Rejoicing still being a particular fave. There have been some good sideman spots too in recent years...
  5. Art Farmer-Modern Art Christian Wallumrod-Sofienberg Variations Charlie Hunter-Right Now Move Chico Hamilton-The Man From Two Worlds and still the new Vandermark and Shorter from last month!
  6. Thanks Bev,one recommendation I won't have to go out and buy as you reminded me that I have it already! One of those that occassionally get filed and lost before listened to...oh for more time!
  7. Do try the studio sets aswell(Vols.1 &2 and the Miles tribute Bye Bye Blackbird-great cover shot on this one, pity it didn't come out on vinyl!).If you feel adventurous check out the "originals" albums,Changes(studio from the same session that produced Vol.1)and the live Changeless and latest two Inside Out and Always Let Me Go.A word too for At The Deer Head Inn,with Jarrett's initial choice for the drum chair,Paul Motian instead of Jack. I can only underline the praise for the Blue Note set, awesome and a box set you really will get down off the shelf at regular intervals.
  8. I've already added to this thread(it's still March!) but what strikes me is those big "listened to these today" lists!WOW!Me,I'm low on time, so sorry to go on about it, but it'll be the V5 new one for me again tonight. Then maybe some Ralph Towner to prepare me for the land of nod.
  9. AfricaBrass,do check out those Martyn albums again, and try to hear "Inside Out" and "One World" too(among many others of that early 70's vintage).Great talent, one of Scotland's finest!
  10. Thanks Simon,I'll look out for the Brookmeyer.I'm with you on the unpromising sounding "orchestral fusion" as a concept, but J.A. pops up in similar waters on Vince Mendoza's "Epiphany" on Zebra-a gorgeous set with Brecker,M./Kenny Wheeler/John Taylor/Marc Johnson and Pete Erskine as the core band plus the London Symphony Orchestra-the saxman even sounds as if there's substance under the sheen(don't get me wrong he's a class player and I like him but I'm in the "he ain't got soul" camp. Incidentally I rate Mendoza too, even if he can be a little sweet-his two Blue Note sets are masterclasses in the art of fusion .
  11. I must apologise but I've been in a bit of a KV can do no wrong phase for a while. He's likely to do it sometime I concede but not so far, this set's a beauty and I've still to get to the Rollins tribute disc!!!
  12. Would love that attachment with audio! I think 3 posts came at once above-the word really is get "Timeless" in your basket first.I can only agrre again with Bev's excellent taste-the two latest are crackers-Abercrombie's hit a real purple patch these last few years, his recent work with Charles Lloyd underlines the fact.
  13. The Abercrombie to get with Hammer(and Dejohnette)is his ECM debut,Timeless, from 74-Night adds Brecker for a few cameos but the spark from the earlier album isn't there, worth hearing but check out the original set first if you haven't already. All 4 Gateway albums are good(2 from the 70's and two 90's reunion sets)In The Moment contains the looser moments from the same sessions as Homecoming. Incidentally if you like Abercrombie with organ, there are 3 sessions with Dan Wall and Adam Nussbaum-While We're Young,Speak Of The Devil and Tactics. All again on ECM,the latter is a live set and my pick of the bunch. There were also two Hendrix tributes with Lonnie Smith from the late 90's but I never got to those.
  14. Deep is here under the name "Wingy (I Stayed Bombed)"... he hasn't posted yet. Could that be self-censorship at work,a little sensitive gesture re. his current moniker? Brit jazz rules!!!(only joking...)
  15. It was the likes of the Dan and Joni Mitchell got me into jazz in the first place.Aja's always been a favourite but apart from the odd reservation about the debut there ain't a dud set in the pack. The new one,"Everything Must Go",is out in May,featuring Bill Charlap and Keith Carlock-don't know who else is on it,any more info anyone?
  16. I find the this board in general more good natured than the B**B.Let's invite Pharoahrock and DEEP... over from AAJ for some sensible and considered debate
  17. I'm with Duke on the only two types of music...good and bad,but about 95% of my "You can't possibly listen to all of those" collection, 2500+,is jazz(Stanley Clarke to Ken Vandermark).I embarass myself almost with some things I like listening to tho',mawkish AOR ballads(not too mawkish mind you)AC/DC,The Bee Gees. Then there's John Martyn to Godspeed You Black Emperor.Did a recent reappraisal of mid 70's King Crimson, check out Starless And Bible Black if you like Headhunters,Spectrum and the Mahavishnus. Some of the best contemporary "junk food" stuff I've heard in the last few years has been from the Mercury Rev/Flaming Lips stable,Icelandic stoners Sigur Ros and Lambchop's sublime "Nixon".See my Avatar,Joni's my "popular" musical heroine(and she keeps good company, take a another bow Wayne. And she brought the best out of Jaco).Given a Desert Island choice of albums(somebody start that thread now, even if it has been done before-it's a great way of discovering new music...there's always something new),they'd be jazz. But single songs would be a different matter.I think at the end of the day it's all down to time, how much time do I have to listen to this thing? My time management tends to fall apart sometime so I do the junk food to keep me going, jazz is something to aspire to in my book, and it delivers handsomely every time!Must unwrap listen to Airports For Light tonight...so much music,so little time as a friend of mine says.
  18. Forgot to mention a Hicks set on DIW,"Sketches Of Tokyo",a duo set again with Murray. As with most duos with the tenorist he dominates proceedings but to my ears that's no bad thing.Pity the Japanese stuff is so expensive these days.
  19. Wayne was pretty lucid on a BBC Radio 3 interview("Front Row")the other day too-you may be able to listen to this via the site's radio player(bbc.co.uk/frontrow),not sure how long they keep the archived stuff open tho'. A real treat for us over here getting this set advance of the US.Beautiful record, reminded me in places of his cameos on Scofield's "Quiet",great to hear him in these settings(check out him on Joni Mitchell's "Travelogue" too if you like Wayne with orchestra)
  20. Don't give up on Ornette Jazzmoose, may I suggest starting backwards with him and lending an ear to his "latest","Colours",a live duo set with pianist Joachim Kuhn from 96.For the record "Change Of The Century" is probably the most accessible of the Atlantics. I can see ,however, that some people just can't connect with him and the sound grates(Tim Berne's an alto player who goes against my grain)
  21. Sideman wise there's an excellent batch with David Murray on DIW and Red Baron. And seconding JohnS do check out those Keystone Trios, particularly the Rollins tribute Newklear Music...beautiful.Picked up Power Trio s/hand myself easily not so long ago, dream trio.
  22. From a European perspective Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko did a couple of stunning quartet sets on ECM with Bobo Stenson,Anders Jormin and Tony Oxley-Matka Joanna and Leosia. The same group "warmed up" for these sessions with Bossanossa on Polish label Gowi(probably still available from those excellent folks at Cadence) .A recent US recommendation would be Dave Douglas' Moving Portrait on DIW.
  23. Certainly a return to the approach of Songbook,if you liked that, this should do the trick...another "nice" Kenny Garrett set.Read somewhere that some of it comes from the Happy People sessions,no recording date specified, but same studio and engineer. The great Joe Ferla recorded some tracks at Avatar too.Don't know if Chris Dave's worthy of the Tony comparison yet but he sure is busy,Charnett Moffett as huge as ever.Yeah, nice record, sunny day music and we need plenty of that in these dark days, cheers Kenny.
  24. Not as startling as Black Action Figure, but overall I like this set, overcooked tho' it is in places. (I never take a lot of notice of liner notes, especially in the fiddly booklet CD age). Why did Blue Note sit on this for so long,Kindred wasn't exactly pushed either(it never came out in the UK).
