  1. Before McCann played "The Shampoo," Steve Allen (this was his mid-'60's late show, on the Westinghouse network) asked how he came up with the title - "I didn't, the producer named it." Dick Bock, marketing genius!
  2. Correct. And "The Shampoo" is more live material from McCann's Village Gate engagement, with just his trio.
  3. That was a productive week in New York for McCann - The Turrentine/McCann Blue Note is another product. Bring on "The Shampoo!"
  4. Before I go out and buy the Coltrane material one more time... I checked my collection for "Transition" (a must, as people have noted many times), and I have a Japanese version (in mini-gatefold format) with the original tracks, that '93 domestic version with slighty altered tracks, and all of it in the "Complete" Impulse quartet box. Does this mean I can take a pass. And, on the subject of "Quad" - "Hold On, I'm Coming" probably did sound good in that tent in Texas (post #42)- but I was in Yankee Stadium for that performance, and it was - no kidding - one of the most memorable sets I ever heard - the audience almost exploded from note one. Go figure.
  5. I'd be curious to know Phil Woods' take on all this.
  6. Charlie Christian, "The Genius Of The Electric Guitar" (what's with this packaging??); "The Dynamic Sound Patterns Of The Rod Levitt Orchestra;" Red Garland, "Solar;" and Soft Machine, "Third."
  7. George Gruntz, "Mental Cruelty: The 1960 Jazz Soundtrack," and Billy Larkin & the Delegates.
  8. The tracks on "Homecoming" go on way too long. As my friend Rodney says, you can go down the street and pick up your groceries, and they'll still be playing the same song when you return. And the original CD release added more! Good record, but never though it was much more. "Manhattan" is excellent, and "Gotham City" is fun.
  9. Guy is correct on the Miles group with J.J. - he was added to the quintet with Mobley and Kelly. Remember reading a review in Downbeat. Miles might have gone into the studio around then, but think it was that odd group with Shorter, Bob Dorough and percussion that got the call. (Could be way off on this, but should be easy to check out.) Don't think Freddie Hubbard/Joe Henderson's "Jazz Communicators" recorded, although they made plenty of records together. In their Crawford Grill appearance here they had Kenny Barron, Herbie lewis and Louis Hayes. It's been awhile, but in the set I heard they played "Pensativa" and "Backlash." This might have been the fall of 1967. And, speaking of Henderson, what about anything from his tenure with Blood, Sweat & Tears?
  10. Some Japanese EMI reissues - Cannonball "In Person" (the one with "Rumpelstiltskin" and "The Scavenger"), Bobby Bryant's "Earth Dance," Roy Haynes "People" and Caldera, "Sky Island."
  11. Just heard this for the first time, it's pretty dreary (despite the nice tenor). It's in the vein of "The Further Adventures of El Chico" (similar tunes, format), but nowhere near as good or fun. Not that THAT's any classic...
  12. Listening to the Sonny Criss right now. It makes those Grover Washington and Hank Crawford "Kudu" extravaganzas seem like "A Love Supreme." The Blue Mitchell is slightly better - Mitchell plays very well, there are actually a couple strong tenor spots - but the the whole thing sounds like the best "Rise"-period album Herb Alpert never made.
  13. Did anyone mention "Odds Against Tomorrow?" What about "Little Shop Of Horrors?" And the beginning of "Absolute Beginners" ia pretty good.
  14. A lot of the titles are available on iTunes, prices are fairly low.
  15. From iTunes... John Coltrane doing "Laura" (from that over-priced Creed Taylor Impulse set). Ouch.
  16. The Mosaic box didn't include the "live" session (released as "Stepping Stones") from the Vanguard. Sony did release that title, with a couple extra cuts - but one issued cut missing! (Think Michael Cuscuna thought that one track was too commercial. Although weren't the commercial tracks the ones that helped sell the albums?) (And, as I recall, it wasn't exactly "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.")
  17. Curtis Fuller, "Boss Of The Soul Stream Trombone." (Can it possibly meet the promise of its title?)
  18. The "live" Cannanball is long over-due, as mentioned above, and I certainly second the sentiments for more material from this date - I was always hoping for some kind of expanded addition, like the Blue Note Lee Morgan "Lighthouse" material. Also, I think there are a couple severe edits in the material as released on the LP, not sure why that couldn't be cleared up. This (and mayve "74 Miles") may be the strongest of the Adderley Capitol recordings.
  19. Just picked up a new version of this - it appears to be a part of the Monk series Sony (or whoever it was at that point) reissued in the early 2000's - extra tracks, restored solos, mastered by Mark Wilder... But this copy comes from Argentina!! Should we be looking in South America for our jazz reissues? Is there a story here (beyond a large international company with operations everywhere)?
  20. Monk, "Live At The 1964 Monterey Jazz Festival." An Amazon reviewer noted that the concert ends with 2 big band arrangements that feature inappropriate, over-blown trumpet solos by Bobby Bryant. That clinched it!
  21. The Roulette albums are good - the Messengers bib over-all phase - but have they ever been reissued?
  22. I have almost nothing by Blakey after 1973, so, what am I missing? Anything stand out? Maybe "Album of the Year?" Any "must haves?" Could I get a few suggestions? (I am familiar with his Roulette albums from the mid-'70's, they're pretty good, but have never seen a reissue.)
  23. Another Monterey airplane - Charles Lloyd's "Forrest Flower." The noises on the Manne "Blackhawk" albums include a ringing phone. And what's that screeching sound on parts of George Benson's "Beyond the Blue horizon?"
  24. The Monk box is invaluable - and there's still stuff in there (the session with Shelly Manne, for example) that might not be available elsewhere. Probabably my favorite of the many boxes I own.
