  1. Vocal's pretty good. I don't like the backing at all. Just my opinion.
  2. I just used post-bop (and I'm not even sure what that means) as part of the thread title. Whether it's Roy Wood or whomever - if people are writing about their favorite music, it's all good.
  3. Gonna Head for Home (Flyright) Considering that he was working with artists in a limited area of Louisiana (not New Orleans), Jay Miller sure produced a lot of great records.
  4. And then there are some folks who try too hard to stay young. Age is more than just a number.
  5. I think you have to answer that question yourself. No one else can answer it for you and make it work.
  6. Ornette: New York Is Now! While I was listening to this today, I kept thinking that this would have been a very different record if Charles Moffett had been the drummer instead of Elvin.
  7. I've started at least a couple of threads like this before, and I just feel like starting another. Below are ten post-bop records that I feel are very good and overlooked. Fred Anderson/Harrison Bankhead: The Great Vision Concert (Ayler) Billy Bang: Outline No. 12 (Celluloid) Ronnie Boykins - ESP Bobby Bradford/Frode Gjerstad: Silver Cornet (Nessa) Al Francis/John Neves/Joe Hunt: Jazz Bohemia Revisited (Lost Cosmic Unity) Bill Lewis/Khan Jamal: The River (Philly Jazz) The Charles Moffett Family Vol. 1 (Charles Moffett) Quartet + 1 - Bob Ackerman/Pam Purvis/Wilber Morris/Denis Charles/Herb Robertson: And Now I Can See Crows Mating in the Mist (Cadence) Roswell Rudd/Giorgio Gaslini: Duo (Dischi Della Quercia) What We Live: Especially the Traveler Tomorrow (Metalanguage) I hope that others will join in. Feel free to add your own choices - as many as you want to add.
  8. Dexter Calling . . .
  9. These days, I'd probably be sick if I ate half a Nathan's.
  10. Different strokes. That's one of the things that's great about music.
  11. I'm an old guy too, Peter, and I have no interest in most (or perhaps all) of Mainstream's 70's output. I don't think that age is a factor (for myself, anyway). It's strictly a matter of having some taste.
  12. Red Mitchell - Harold Land Quintet: Hear Ye! (Atlantic/Koch) A good solid session - if I were using the old Down Beat ratings, I'd give it 3 1/2 stars - but nothing spectacular. I may hang on to it simply because I don't have a lot of Carmel Jones in my collection.
  13. Buena Vista Social Club Presents Omara Portuondo
  14. Molly Ringwald Alexander Graham Bell Norman Vincent Peale
  15. Luis Miranda: Mi Musica Borincana Volume 2 (Ansonia)
  16. My old Rounder LP of reissued tracks still sounds good to me.
  17. Catesta said: "Same thing with senior pro golf. A lot of those guys are still capable of beating much younger competitors." I assume he was speaking about current tour players, and not just any 25 year old bozo who plays golf. You can turn it around any way you want, but again, and I'll word it differently - Name me another major sport where a 60 year old can compete against a 25 year old currently competing athlete and beat them.
  18. How so? Name me another major sport where a 60 year old can compete against a 25 year old current professional and beat them.
  19. Benny Waters and Claude Williams were youngsters compared to him. And Bertha Hope is a mere child.
  20. More aka's than some wanted posters.
  21. George traded to the Thunder. It will be interesting to see whether he decides to stay there after a year.
  22. Jimmy Rushing: Every Day
  23. David Holland: Life Cycle
  24. If so, that says more about the younger competitors than it does about the old guys. Yes I do - see Terry Bradshaw, Bill Walton, Charles Barkley, and Pete Rose - to name a few.
