  1. Another favorite. I'm glad we can still watch the original.
  2. Howlin' Wolf Screamin' Joe Neal Honkers and Shouters
  3. Don't forget the solid year that Matt Holiday is having. And Brett Gardner is on track to score over 100 runs, which is the goal Girardi set for him before the season began.
  4. Congratulations to the winners. That said, I can't help but say that people like Roswell Ruud, Roscoe Mitchell, Andrew Cyrille, and Louis Hayes are at least as much, and in my opinion, much more deserving than any people who were honored this year. I guess that I'm just part of the yearly complaining. Previous thread:
  5. Earl Hines & the Duke's Men (Delmark)
  6. Mal Waldron: Mingus Lives (Enja)
  7. Oscar Aleman: Swing Guitar Masterpieces 1935 - 1957 (Acoustic Disc)
  8. I've always wondered how French RCA managed to release those extra tracks. Sonny (or Lucille) seemed to be very unwilling to have anything outside of what his contract called for released (as was the case when Impulse issued an album which wasn't part of his contract with them). If there was a settlement made, I wonder why the same couldn't have been done to release the extra tracks of the group with Don Cherry legitimately.
  9. Some prime Jug - for sure.
  10. Peter, memories like that one are a big part of the music.
  11. Actually, the long HRs are fun to see, but his BA, OBA, and slugging % impress me more.
  12. Albert Ayler: Live in Greenwich Village
  13. Complete turnaround from the end of last season, when he was constantly swinging at pitches out of the strike zone and striking out about half the time. I actually missed the 495 foot homer. I turned off the game to do a couple of chores around the house. Thanks for the link - plus I'm sure they'll show it a few times after the game. Sanchez hit a long one earlier in the game. He's starting to turn it around and is getting his timing back after the injury that cost him almost a month at the beginning of the season.
  14. I saw one of the previous episodes and it was palatable (I'd give it 4 stars out of ten), but this episode was mostly garbage, as far as my tastes go. If Rhiannon Giddens didn't look like she does, I doubt there's be all that much interest in her vocals.
  15. PBS is showing as part of their American Epic series, a documentary of present day musicians - some contemporary hipster types I'm not familiar with, plus people like Taj Mahal, Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, Bettye Lavette, Beck, and Elton John recording mostly old blues and country tunes live in the studio with antique recording equipment. I don't know what the purpose of this is. The people who originally recorded back when were singing and playing their lives. (I realize that they were trying to have musical careers but, for them, the music was a part of their lives, not a part of their record collections.) The whole business just seemed stupid to me. Better to have a two hour YouTube type documentary - show the record labels and maybe some photographs and just play the original music. I know - The answer is that PBS couldn't raise money by just playing great music. Which is sad.
  16. Lee Konitz: Lone-Lee (Steeplechase) I have to be in a certain mood to listen to nearly an hour of solo saxophone but, this morning, I was in that mood. And it helped that Lee was the saxophonist.
  17. Seems as if you're having a good time watching Woody's films. Good for you!
  18. What impresses me about Judge is that he's not just taking big swings - HR or strikeout. He's become a good disciplined hitter - .320+ BA and .430+ OBA.
  19. The entire session from the LP you have is on the CD, The Essential Buck Clayton - Vanguard 103/4 -2. The CD also contains additional tracks from LPs with Mel Powell and Ruby Braff, on which Buck Clayton played. As you and others have noted, that Vanguard CD series consists of great music and has excellent sound, but presented in a "haphazard" (a good description on your part) fashion. Nice find, by the way.
  20. Fortunately for both of them, there's a long way to go.
  21. Johnny Dodds: New Orleans Stomp (Frog)
