  2. I remember seeing Cozy Cole on television when "Topsy Part 2" was a hit. He played along with the record by himself - no band. Drum sync?
  3. Sweets Edison Alfredo "Chocolate" Armenteros Candy Barr
  4. High Atmosphere (Rounder) Wondrous music accompanied by haunting photographs by John Cohen (who also did the recordings) on the cover and in the accompanying booklet. One of the most beautifully presented records in my collection.
  5. Carlos Ward Quartet: Lito (Leo)
  6. Dr. Victor Olaiya: In the Sixties (Polydor)
  7. Jimmy Woods: Conflict (Contemporary black label) I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. I've kept the early albums I have by her, but I've never kept the more recent Bloom albums I've tried for more than a couple of months. "Mighty Lights" is one of Bloom's earliest efforts (1982). I hope by "early" you mean prior to 2000. Because if you missed "The Nearness" (1995) or "Red Quartets" (1999), you missed some good stuff. I do agree that her latest efforts (2000-2013) are not as good as her earlier stuff. Actually, she lost my attention earlier than that - around the time of Modern Drama. I heard her play live a number of times prior to that recording and bought a couple of her recordings after that one, but I've only kept the ones before Modern Drama. Just my take and tastes.
  8. When Iverson writes, "In addition, if the cats at Organissimo are so appalled, I'm really whistling in the wind, as there can't be many people that care about these Bee Hive records who aren't at least lurking on Organissimo", I think that's just reality, Larry.
  9. I do feel that there was a lot of nit picking in the responses to his review. After all, Larry did begin with: "As it happens, and going on memory, I share his reservations about all the Beehive dates Iverson has reservations about (that would be most of them" Forest and the trees kind of thing to me. Some folks see the forest and others see the trees, but chopping down the forest to draw attention to a few trees makes no sense to me.

  13. Jane Ira Bloom: Mighty Lights (Enja) Brought back good memories of hearing this band (w. Haden, Blackwell, Hersch) play live a couple of times. She had something going back then and somehow seemed to lose it along the way to now.
  14. James Brown ("Baby, Baby, Baby") Alfred Nobel Marlon Brando
  15. Read the book years ago. You nailed it with your comment: Nice baseball book but more a book about four men.
  16. momsmobley Hank Williams Junior Gilliam
  17. Joe Gordon: Lookin' Good! (Contemporary - black Label)
  18. Simenon: The Dancer at the Gai-Moulin One of the least satisfying Maigrets that I've read. More of a procedural which lacks the psychological aspects of other novels in the series.
  19. If you're going for only one of the Running Low/Last Chance boxes, that one should be it. (Unless it's already in your home.)
  20. Reminder to self: Never write anything critical when these guys are around,
  21. Some of my favorite Dizzy and I love the band too.
  22. Cannonball Adderley Quintet in Chicago (Mercury/Speakers Corner) A recording that doesn't speak to me as it once did.
  23. Albert Ayler: Swing Low Sweet Spiritual (Osmosis)
