  1. I found that one disappointing. A lot of people like it, but I'll stick with my view.
  2. Little Axe: So Many Years (Gospel Jubilee)
  3. Herb Alpert Lash LaRue Ginger Baker
  4. When I was in college in late 1963, Trane was playing at a club and I didn't go. Not a good decision.
  5. Maggie May May West Guns n Roses
  6. As this point, I have no interest in hi-res downloads, so I have no horse in the race. But, given that Sony failed to make SACDs a commercial success, it doesn't seem that the general public has any real interest in better sound. The general public seems to be interested in portability and easy access - not to mention music which is pap and which doesn't need to be presented with better sound quality.

  11. Tabby Thomas: Hoodoo Party (Flyright)
  12. I heard David Eyges and Byard Lancaster play live around the time the first LP was issued. They did it up well. I have both of the LPs, but I'd have to do some more listening before I'd make a judgement call on them.
  13. Here's a very nice remembrance/history of Tabby Thomas written by his son, Chris Thomas King: http://www.christhomasking.com/Chris_Thomas_Kings_official_website/Tabby_Thomas_RIP.html Tabby Thomas had a good strong voice. I'll have to take my Flyright LP (released and unreleased material from the Jay Miller vaults) off the shelf and give it it's first listen (I'm ashamed to say) in too many years. edit: Thanks for letting us know about his passing, Jeff.
  14. Bobby Bradford and the Mo'Tet: Lost in L.A. (Soul Note)

  16. His early poetry was very important to me - and still is. My only encounter with Mr. Baraka was back in the mid 1980's. I was sitting at the bar at Sweet Basil digging Cecil's group. I had my eyes closed for a few minutes. I remember I was smiling because I was enjoying the music so much and, when I opened my eyes, I saw Mr. Baraka sitting on the other side of the bar, looking over and also smiling. It seemed (at least to me) that for that moment we were on a somewhat similar page. Perhaps presumptuous on my part, but that's how it seemed. Thank you, Mr. Baraka.
  17. I used to have the Organic Music LP set on Caprice. I don't know if that was similar to this new one, but I'll say that the LPs didn't grab me. I'll also say that Don Cherry is a big deal for me.
  18. He was a fine musician. My favorite recording of him as a leader is Communion on Silkheart. I had the opportunity to hear him play live once and spoke to him after the concert. He seemed like a genuinely nice person. Thank you, Mr. Campbell.
  19. The Spirit of Memphis: When Mother's Gone (Gospel Jubilee)
  20. We've all been there at one time or another. Some of us probably still are, for better or for worse.

  22. Why anyone would waste their time discussing Teachout's writings is beyond me.
