  4. His father gave him some very good advice: "My father told me when I was young," he told The Times in 1994, "that since I was going to have to work a very long time, choose something I enjoyed and I'd never have to work a day in my life. I'm 72 and I still enjoy playing."
  5. Some might say that Trane falls into this category, though I hear a series of flowing transitions in his music. His music changed but his basic sound remained the same, at least to my ears.

  9. I think that you'll love that box, brownie. Indeed! But i have enjoyed Elmore James ever since I was hooked on his music by Jacques Demetre when I was still a teenager. Demetre was the coauthor of the classic book 'Land of the Blues' which recounted his 1959 trip to the USA and his encounter with James in Chicago. Demetre also took the color photos (including the cover) that adorn the excellent accompanying booklet. And that Ace bow is a gem! Land of the Blues is a fine book filled with many, many great photos. I'm lucky to have a copy. The music world owes a large debt to Jacques Demetre. Did you know Mr. Demetre?

  21. Chet Baker Trio: Mr. B (Timeless) Very good record, but when I listen to it, I'm bugged by the fact that Chet took composer's credit for Charlie Haden's "Ellen David" and changed the title to "Ellen and David". Perhaps stealing writer's credit is a trumpeter thing....
