  2. Even with the Dodgers in shambles, the Angels have never had a chance of taking over LA baseball, there is zero interest in the Angels outside of Orange County. On this signing: Well, good luck with Pujols and Hamilton in the same clubhouse, that is a terrible mix, and besides, the LA area is the last place Hamilton needs to be with his history. This has disaster written all over it. My brother [who still lives down there] told me that when the new ownership changed the name [yet again] to Los Angeles Angels of Anahiem that was the thinking: To gain a market share of the LA fan base. Didn't work. But the team has no trouble putting fans in the seats from OC, East LA County, San Bernardino County and Riverside County. The Dodgers, OTOH, couldn't fill the stadium if they were giving away free tickets. LA is a Lakers town now. Jim Buss is making sure that that won't last.

  8. There's been lots of guys who could play changes. Not all of them could play music worth my interest. As for Shepp: there's good Shepp, bad Shepp, and in between. - for various reasons. I listen to the good Shepp.

  14. I own some 78s, but have nothing to play them on. If I were younger, I'd probably pick up a turntable that could play them and probably would collect some. But at this stage in my life, I don't need more stuff. I do read the "What 78" thread and get a sort of vicarious pleasure from doing that. Hope you 78 guys will keep posting.

  17. Harper Barnes' novel, Blue Monday, which concerns the death of Bennie Moten, makes mention of many musicians who were active in Kansas City during the 1930's: Basie, Pres, Ben Webster, Herschel Evans, Joe Turner, Julia Lee, and on and on. John A. Williams' novel, Clifford's Blues - not about Clifford Brown or even Clifford Thornton - Mentions Sam Wooding, Ellington, Doc Cheatham, Gene Sedric, Tommy Ladnier, Ma Rainey, Garvin Bushnell, Kid Ory (Orey, in the book) , Louis, Bessie Smith, and many other musicians.

  19. Interesting to look at my choices from 7 1/2 years ago. If I were doing it today, I might make some changes and might even leave a few artists off the list, but there's nothing I'm ashamed of posting.
