  1. To me, it's the equivalent of a 1950's dixieland group doing a concert of Louis' Hot Five recordings. You can't go home again - especially if you never lived there.
  2. Sam Rivers played on Evans' Living Time album and toured with Cecil Taylor. Rivers toured and recorded with Cecil - 3 LPs on Shandar, reissued on Prestige.

  6. I have the Enja record but haven't listened to it in a while. The Evans track never made much of an impression on me - as a matter of fact, I'd forgotten that Tony Oxley played on it. I'll have to listen again. Oxley must be one of the few people who recorded with both Bill Evans and Cecil. I can think of Chuck Israels, plus Trane and Max on two separate George Russell big big band dates. No one else comes to mind.

  10. Anyone with an interest in early jazz should grab the Bechet - some classic music included.
  11. Huh, I wrote that almost two years ago. Not sure if my opinion still holds. I do think, though, that hard bop as a genre was vital to jazz music until the early 1960s, by which point it was largely played out and overly formulaic. Of course, a lot of free jazz is also overly formulaic these days as well. Eventually everything gets played out. Have just started reading some of your blog posts. Some interesting stuff there - thanks.

  22. If the greatest rock and roll band is not worthy of honor then none is. And, there are no American acts worthy of such an honor in the genre. The "limeys", as you so eloquently call them. took an "American" music, put it through a blender, and did it better than any American to date has ever done it. Simply put, we have not stepped up to the plate to match the results of the British Invasion. If you actually believe this and you're not just looking for another argument - seems to be your modus operandi - you had better do some serious listening. I actually believe this, after decades of serious listening. It was your initial comment which indicated ignorance. General rule of thumb -- if you don't want to be called out, don't say it. Your anger/whining over jazz not being recognized on a national level is misplaced, naive and offensive to boot, AND you seem to conveniently forget Jimmy Carter's little jazz party. Name one American rock band since the invasion which has melded the elements in a better way and more successfully than Led Zeppelin. Go ahead --- I dare ya. You're trying to distract from the issue at hand. I know that if I were a "blimey", I'd sure as hell be offended. My granddaddy once told me, "If you waste any of the short time you have on earth arguing with an ignorant person, you'll be worse off than they are. They're just ignorant. You'll be a fool." So long.
  23. I find it impossible to listen to any of Spector's stuff since he ended up in prison. I knew he was what he was even before he went to prison, but that kind of sealed the deal for me.
  24. A friend emailed me yesterday saying, "I'll be glad when this month is over." All I could answer was "Amen".
