  1. Congratulations to you and your family, Jim.

  3. Never said that his death had to do with the "other" news item. Just pointing out something that should should REALLY be peeved about. As usual, I see that some others here are all too eager to fall in line and brown-nose their way into the heart of the famous jazz producer. Credibiliity, real or imagined, has nothing to do with the fact that you choose to focus your energies on that instead of what is really the unfortunate travesty -- the death of a nation. Fame, or lack thereof, has no bearing on that. Couldn't agree more. Slurp! Pretty sad if this is the best you can come up with to justify your initial post, which had to do with your feelings and had nothing to do with this thread.
  4. I'm sorry to see just about any music retail outlet close. Another chance for small companies to sell their releases goes by the wayside.

  7. Bluesman Eddie "Guitar" Burns passed away on December 12, 2012. For most of his career, he recorded a series of 45s for small Detroit based labels. Later in his career, he recorded several albums. I heard him play at a small club in the late 1980s, and he could still do it then. The Dutch Moonshine label collected a number of his early singles on an album called Treat Me Like I Treat You. It's a bootleg, but Eddie was selling copies at the gig I heard him play, so I guess he was happy with it. If you can find a copy these days, it's well worth playing and listening to. Obituary: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/dec/21/eddie-burns Interesting to see that Marvin Gaye is credited as the drummer on "Orange Driver"/"Hard Hearted Women" (Harvey 118). I have that 45 somewhere. Harvey was Harvey Fuqua's label, so it may well have been the case.
  8. Jimmy McCracklin was probably best known for his record, "The Walk", and for co-writing "Tramp", but he made a lot of fine recordings. My favorites are the sides he did for Modern - reissued by Ace. He had a long and distinguished career. Thanks for the music you gave us, Mr. McCracklin.
  9. I remember when I was about 20 years old and had just gotten into Dolphy and Bird. It struck my young ears that the the in between notes that Bird played as accents in his solos were almost part of Dolphy's common vocabulary. My ears are more sophisticated now and I know that's not exactly the case. But I still think that I heard some truth back then.

  14. More Inez Andrews: It's startling to me how dignified and composed her performing persona is, in contrast to the intense emotionalism of her singing.
  15. Kirk and some others - I recall Archie Shepp - played for about three minutes on the Ed Sullivan show. I saw it and it didn't give me the impression that it would have any influence on anything. And I don't believe that it did. Activism comes in different forms. In that case, it had no effect, at least as far as I could tell.
  16. Some INTENSE Inez Andrews that I've loved for years: Thank you, Ms. Andrews.

  20. Those are the basics but, if you don't know at least some of the other live recordings, you're missing a lot of the essence of Charlie Parker. And I think if I had to choose, I'd forgo the Verves in favore of some live recordings.
  21. Some of my favorite Zoot on that record.
  22. The Mingus is a classic reissue - done perfectly. Chuck did some yeoman work helping to compile this one. Relistened to the Allen Eager recently and enjoyed it a lot. The Don Joseph is a fine LP. I believe it may be reissued on CD at some point All of these are the sort of things that other companies rarely or never do and don't do as well.
  23. Happy Birthday, David!
