  1. It's that day again. Happy Birthday to a great guy - The soul of the Big O Board! Don't want to embarrass Chuck, but all of us are lucky that he's here with us. Chuck is always willing to generously share his knowledge with the rest of us. I can't begin to recount how much I've learned from him over the years. And the world has benefited from all the recordings that he's released over the years. All of those didn't just happen. There were sacrifices involved in getting those recordings out there. And despite the crusty front he sometimes likes to project, he has one of the kindest, most generous hearts I know. So Happy Birthday, Chuck!

  4. Arthur Phillips novel, Prague Early 20's American yups in Budapest in the very early 1990's. The only interesting character in the book is somewhat of a cliche - an elderly female jazz pianist/singer who tells some great stories. It turns out that her stories probably are lies, but they're good stories, nonetheless.
  5. Apologies. My bad. Got my brawls mixed up. The Knicks & Heat had a few - lots of bad blood after Riley went to Miami.
  6. 1997 playoffs - Miami vs. N.Y. Late in game 5, Charlie Ward undercut P.J. Brown while both were attempting to rebound a free throw. A brawl ensued, several Knicks left the bench & were suspended. Van Gundy came onto the court - claimed he was trying to stop the brawl - ended up hanging onto one of Alonzo Mourning's legs. I'm sure someone can come up with a video for this. I'm too tired to look for one. edit - Knicks lost the series - probably because of the suspensions. It was the 1998 play offs It was LJ vs Zo and there was bad blood between them from their Charlotte days together Not a big deal at this late date, but it was 1997 & the fracas started with Charlie Ward & P.J. Brown. I watched it.

  19. Not sure if it ever saw a U.S. release, but I don't believe so. Some of the best live Bird ever recorded.
  20. I just learned of the passing last month of Bob Jones, a recording engineer best known for his LP mastering work for the U.K. label, Ace Records. The LPs he did for Ace in the 1980's are some of the best ever done. Much of the music that Ace reissued had only been presented in mediocre fashion before Bob Jones worked his magic. He respected and honored the music - I should say he loved it - and presented it in the right way. I regard the Bob Jones mastered LPs I have as treasured gems. In the early 1990s, I sent Mr. Jones a fan letter, probably an unusual thing for a recording engineer to receive. He was gracious enough to reply, answering questions about the speakers and amps he used to monitor the music he put on record, and even invited me to visit him at his studio if I ever made it to England. I never made it over there. "Carpe diem".
