  6. $30 here - http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=1382607 Still a pretty penny, but perhaps a bit of a bargain compared to $40.
  7. If you have or are getting some of the Blue Note recordings, you need some of his RCA Victor sides. The Legendary Sidney Bechet is a good collection and can be had cheap. Up a Lazy River has the great quartet recordings with Muggsy Spanier. Although I consider his early (1923-25) recordings with Clarence Williams' Blue Five, etc. stone cold masterpieces, a newcomer might be put off by the archaic sound - plus they're hard to find. There are a handful of these on the Ken Burns Bechet collection, but exploring these might be a project you save for later. Good recs from Jeff. Here's a previous Bechet thread: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...9&hl=bechet
  8. Some random choices of older things with some (relatively - all of this music is old in years, if not in spirit, these days) newer choices in the same vein: If you like Basie's piano, try The Original James P. Johnson 1942-1945 (Smithsonian Folkways). From there, you might try Thelonious Monk: Thelonious Himself (Riverside) - not a huge leap. Then maybe to Earl Hines: Four Jazz Giants - farther out than Monk. If you like Pres, you might try Warne Marsh: All Music (Nessa). Or Charlie Parker: Complete Savoy and Dial Master Takes. Or some other tenor players - Ben Webster: Soulville; At Ease with Coleman Hawkins; John Coltrane: Ballads; or Gene Ammons: Boss Tenor or Gentle Jug. If you like Louis, try Roy Eldridge: The Nifty Cat (New World); Joe Wilder: Alone with Just My Dreams (Evening Star); or Pee Wee Russell: Swingin' with Pee Wee (Prestige) with Buck Clayton playing some great trumpet. Django Reinhardt: Classic Early Recordings (JSP) is a great way to hear a lot of great music for a cheap price. Unique is a word that's thrown around, but Django truly was. The Best of Sidney Bechet (Blue Note) - Some may argue with the title, but it's great music & contains some of the first Bechet I ever heard. Finally, a couple of drummer led bands that will make you want to get up and dance: Chick Webb: Strictly Jive (Hep) and Art Blakey: A Night at Birdland Vol. 1 & 2 (Blue Note) Whatever you choose to listen to from anyone's recommendations, I hope you enjoy the music. It's never ending, and you'll never hear it all, but you can have fun trying.

  10. BUT - Kareem, Oscar & co. won a championship in Milwaukee. True, but he didn't become a "legend" until he hit the Lakers and contributed to a dynasty. I'm starting to question the Cleveland franchise's capacity to get that "championship" thing up and running. It's takes a helluva loit more than "luck", good players, and one super-superstar. It's a whole "culture" if you will. Now, imagine James going, not to NY, but to Chicago.... hmmmm.... And the Lakers didn't become a dynasty until Magic (& later Worthy) joined Kareem. As you say, there's more involved in winning it all than a superstar and some good players. I hope that LeBron stays in Cleveland. Hey, it's his home town - tho that probably doesn't mean much.
  11. As Jim said, the only Bird not worth hearing are the few things where the noise obliterates the music. The thing is with Bird is that his sound cuts through a lot of superfluous noise and you can still hear him, even when the other musician's sounds are lost. I'll mention a couple of things worth finding. There's a great session from Dec. 1950 - a WJZ broadcast from Birdland that has some of the greatest Bird I've heard - Bird w. Red Rodney, Kenny Drew, Curley Russell, & Blakey. Bird is on fire and the rest of the band is right with him. The set begins with a version of "Anthropology" taken at an insane tempo. Kenny Drew was 22 when this was recorded, and this contains some of his best playing - certainly the most fiery I've heard. Art Blakey sounds like he was ready to explode. At times, it seems like Curley Russell's rock steady bass was all that was holding the band together. Listening to it again today, I had the feeling that if this music had been recorded in high fidelity it might blow my speakers apart. I have it on a Royal Jazz CD, available here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00...7181&sr=8-1 Don't believe the review - The sound isn't much, but the music is fantastic. Incidentally, the rest of the CD contains three performances by Tony Fruscella, Bill Triglia, and probably Dave Schildkraut - not Bird, as the liners advertise. Another interesting Bird CD is Bird's Eyes Vol. 8 (Philology W80.2) - Several performances w. the Kenton band from early 1954 and 13 minutes of Paul Desmond and an announcer interviewing Bird.

  13. Yeah - the big fish/small pond syndrome. BUT - Kareem, Oscar & co. won a championship in Milwaukee. Remains to be seen if LeBron & the Cavs will do that.

  22. Memphis Unlimited is indeed available as a single CD. Evidently, Eight Men, Four Women has been available as a single CD for a while - slipped by me. Check out the customer review on CDU - maybe real, maybe not, but real nonetheless. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...tomer%20Reviews
  23. Thanks for posting that, Jeff - interesting, arcane - these days, anyway - music. Kid Thomas Valentine looks like a good start.
