Jesse Allen, James Von Streeter & his Wig Poppers, Little Miss Cornshucks, etc.: Jumpin' the Blues Vol. 3 - Decca sides, including Danny Taylor's "Coffee Daddy Blues"/"Blues Got Me Rockin'", with instrumental backing by tenor sax, organ, steel guitar, and bongos! Find another blues record with that instrumentation.

Not the University, nor Bobby Jones, the golfer, not even Bobby Jones, formerly of the 76ers. Forgot to mention in my thread that Bob Jones loved r&b, blues, and early rock n roll - he may have had other musical loves that I don't know about too. For a short time, he had his own reissue label, Detour, which didn't survive into the CD era. I believe that he also may have been involved with the ZuZazz label. I think that I read somewhere that he was one of the engineers working for the Decca label, recording classical music in the 1960s. I may be wrong about that, so if anyone knows, I'm all ears.

I've been listening to a couple of Ace (UK) blues reissue LPs this afternoon. Both were remastered by Bob Jones, who did a lot of great work for Ace and Flyright, among other labels, during the late 70's to late 80's. Those were golden years for blues and r&b reissues, and to my ears, he was the best at what he did. Thinking about it, he also did some fine work for Bear Family on several country sets in my collection. I think of his work in the same way that many people here think of Steve Hoffman's or Rudy Van Gelder's remastering work on jazz reissues. I realize that if the original recording is poorly done, all the mastering and remastering in the world will be of no use. But it does take a good set of ears and a lot of engineering talent to take recorded material which was intended for release on 78 rpm or 45 rpm and make it sound good on a reissue LP or CD. I've heard enough mediocre to bad transfers to know that well. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone on the Board knows if Bob Jones is still active or still alive - I hope both.

John Lee Hooker Volume One (Ace) This was mastered by Bob Jones, one of the best. Does anyone know if he's still active?

Best wishes - hope it's a great birthday! -
Interesting that the Neil Young thread has more than twice as many posts as the Buck Clayton thread.

Re. the clifford box - That makes sense. I stand corrected.

Wonder if Clem will weigh in on this topic?

Can't believe that they'd delete the Clifford set. Well, I guess I can believe it, but that should be in print forever. Perhaps our friends over in Spain have released it, and are taking away sales.

Artists that retired at the top of their game.

Pretty sure that you meant to write Bennie Moten instead of Eddie Moten. -

Isn't that true of all of Chuck's list? I'm not sure about Eddie Lang. I'm assuming that Chuck's point was ironic - all of the people he listed died relatively young, while at or near the height of their creativity. -
The Complete H.R.S. Sessions on Mosaic contains a couple of very fine Buck Clayton dates, plus one where he appears as a sideman. I believe that the Clayton led dates also appear on Classics 968 - Buck Clayton: 1945-1947. OJC 1709 contains all of the H.R.S. sessions, except for five alternate takes. However, besides having the alternate takes, the Mosaic set contains far superior sound compared to the OJC. It also contains a lot of great music, which, if you like Buck Clayton, you'll probably also enjoy. Plus, the Mosaic won't be around forever. So, some choices to be made if you're interested in this chapter of Buck Clayton's recording career.

Some of my favorite later Buck Clayton is on a Pee Wee Russell session, Swingin' with Pee Wee, reissued by OJC, and paired with Portrait of Pee Wee (a very good but non Buck date). OJC has also reissued two good Buck Clayton dates with Buddy Tate, Buck & Buddy and Buck & Buddy Blow the Blues. Vanguard has (somewhat haphazardly) reissued four sides which include Buck Clayton on Mel Powell: It's Been So Long and Mel Powell: The Best Things in Life. All of these are well worth listening to.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

Sidney Bechet Select - disc one This, along with some solo Earl Hines, has made for some intense listening recently. -
A friend told me that he bought a Jamaican import reggae LP, and the record had a raisin pressed into it. THAT'S the one that should have had the joint in it!

Don Menza - Jack Rabbitt (Cadence Jazz Records)
paul secor replied to JSngry's topic in Recommendations
Nope. Your writing was the incentive to order it, and I can't thank you enough for that. -
Haven't seen JC around here lately - perhaps he's on a sub, 20,000 leagues under some sea. Anyway, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Wherever you are, I hope all is well and that you're digging some good toons.

Don Menza - Jack Rabbitt (Cadence Jazz Records)
paul secor replied to JSngry's topic in Recommendations
Read (or reread the above) - it says everything you have to know about this recording. Then get the CD, listen, and it will be in your collection for life. Don Menza played the first live jazz I heard. I was 17, it was my first day at college, and a new world opened up for me. Jack Rabbit brought back some of the memories and feelings of that day. I hope there will be more to come, but if not, this will be enough. Many thanks to Jim for posting this. It's one of the most eloquent reviews I can recall reading. I've only done this a couple of times before, but I'm copying the review - appreciation might be a better term - and putting it inside the Jack Rabbit CD case. (Jim, If I have to pay royalties for the reprint rights, pm me and I hope we can work something out.) -
All the best - Happy Birthday!
