Saddened, but not surprised, at the news of his death. I just reread his words on Richard Nixon's funeral in 'Better than Sex': "If the right people had been in charge of Nixon's funeral, his casket would have been launched into one of those open-sewage canals that empty into the ocean just south of Los Angeles. He was a swine of a man and a jabbering dupe of a president. Nixon was so crooked that he needed servants to help him screw his pants on every morning. Even his funeral was illegal. He was queer in the deepest way. His body should have been burned in a trash bin. These are harsh words for a man only recently canonized by President Clinton and my old friend George McGovern - but I have written worse things about Nixon, many times, and the record will show that I kicked him repeatedly long before he went down. I beat him like a mad dog with mange every time I got a chance, and I am proud of it. He was scum."

Check out his playing with Buell Neidlinger (K2B2, Soul Note, Antilles).

The first person I thought it couldn't possibly be was Buddy Rich - so it's probably he. Jo Jones did it (made love to the drums, that is). I don't know if he said it.

J.S. Bach: Suites 1-6 for Unaccompanied Cello

Thanks for all of the responses and dialogue. It seems as if you all had a good time discussing this - a good thing. I'll probably start with the Starker, live with it for a while, and go on from there. And please continue, if you will. -
Didn't mean to write about a discographical issue and ignore the man's passing. Judging from the obituary that brownie printed, it seems that he was more concerned about taking care of his family and his health than he was about gaining a national reputation. There's something very positive about that.

I don't know if this has been covered here before. If so, please direct me. A few weeks ago, I heard a performance of Suite Number One on my car radio. It was a taped performance, and is not commercially available. If anyone here can recommend a favorite recording of these pieces, I'll appreciate it greatly.

Haven't counted, but I figure about 15.

To add to the "Joe Thomas" section of this thread, there is some very good later (1961) Joe Thomas on Claude Hopkins' 'Swing Time' CD (Prestige 24215). The second half of the CD contains Hopkins' 'Let's Jam' Prestige/Swingville LP with Joe Thomas.

Denon actually released 2 LPs - Our Man Papa Jo (YX-7527) and Papa Jo and His Friends (Denon YX-7405), the latter a 45 rpm LP. I've never seen a CD, but if one was released, the two sessions may have been combined on it.

Cecil Taylor/Buell Neidlinger 1961
paul secor replied to slide_advantage_redoux's topic in Discography
I was just repeating what Buell Neidlinger stated. I don't know whether it's a fact or not. -
I listen to many genres of music and to many types within those genres. That said, I find as I get older that I'm less open to trying unknown artists. Part of that is getting older - I grew up listening to Cecil, Ornette, Merle Haggard, Pres, the Soul Stirrers, Muddy Waters, Bird, and many, many others. Some of these people are still alive, and there is an unending stream of reissues of recordings by artists who have passed. It's always easier (and safer) to buy a recording of someone whose music I love and whose music I'm familiar with. A second factor is that there are so many recordings being issued - a virtual flood, compared to, say, 30 years ago - by both established and new artists, that it gets harder and harder to take a chance on buying something by an unknown (to me) artist and stay within my budget. There are a lot of artists who turn up on Cadence's year end best of lists or who are mentioned in the Funny Rat thread, whom I'm totally unfamiliar with. Every so often, I think about buying my next 10 or 20 CDs strictly by artists I'm unfamiliar with, but that never happens. I end up buying the newest Cecil Taylor - they never seem to end, and I just bought Almeda, which I believe is the latest.

Cecil Taylor/Buell Neidlinger 1961
paul secor replied to slide_advantage_redoux's topic in Discography
Correct. I don't remember the source but 30+ years ago I was told Clark Terry was a sub for the originally chosen Don Cherry. Remembered reading that more recently, but couldn't think where. Just checked the liner notes to the Mosaic box and Buell Neidlinger states that Don Cherry was supposed to play on this date, but Ornette objected and told him he'd be out of Ornette's band if he recorded with Cecil. -
I bought my copy from Cadence maybe four years ago and paid full price. I've enjoyed it so much that if I'd paid $40 for it, it would have been worth it. Anyone who doesn't grab this for $4 is just plain nuts or doesn't like music.
