  3. Paul Serrano played on Eddie Johnson's Nessa album, Indian Summer. He also owned a recording studio. Perhaps Chuck can tell us more.
  4. Yesterday: Stan Getz/Charlie Byrd: Jazz Samba (Speakers Corner) Ahmed Abdullah and the Solomonic Quintet (Silkheart) Jimmy Forrest: Out of the Forrest (OJC)
  5. Whatever year the Monk Mosaic was released - I'm too old to remember when that was.
  6. Evans wrote "NYC's No Lark" as a eulogy for Clark (the title is an anagram of his name). I think they were also nicknamed the Gold Dust Twins for their addictive inclinations. I believe that Hampton Hawes, in his autobiography, says that he and Sonny Clark were called the Gold Dust Twins. Perhaps it was a common nickname.
  7. Jake Porter, in addition to being a musician, owned Combo Records, an L.A. based r&b/blues label, active in the 1950's (possibly before?). Ace (U.K.) Records has released some of the Combo catalog.
  8. Last night: Roland Kirk with Jack McDuff: Kirk's Work (Prestige/OJC) Johnnie Taylor: Raw Blues (Stax) Clifford Brown/Max Roach: Live at the Bee Hive (CBS - Netherlands) - It was both exhilarating and frightening to hear Max Roach play like he was possessed. I'm reminded of Cecil Taylor's comment that the most terrifying thing in this society is to feel. (That's not a direct quote, but I think it's the gist of what he said.) I'm sure that he wasn't referring only to music, but I thought of that statement when I was listening to Max's playing on this record.
  9. The JFK Quintet: New Jazz Frontiers from Washington - OJC 1924. Most of the playing is straight post-bop, but Andrew White's alto definitely leans toward the "out".
  10. John Patton: Soul Connection (Nilva)
  11. Happy Birthday!
  12. Sadik Hakim Jimmy Yancey
  13. For the last hour or so - Billy Boy Arnold's "I Ain't Got You".
  14. I tend to agree with the other posters - get the earlier recordings first and grab the Nessa box before it's out of print. But - which of the three you listed did you buy?
  15. Hell, my wife curses my collection while I'm alive. (At least she doesn't curse me.) Every so often, she threatens to get together with my best friend's wife and sell both of our record/cd collections at a yard sale for 10 cents a piece. I just hope that she waits til I'm gone.
  16. I've been using the Cadence sleeves for 7-8 years and haven't had any problems. They're definitely space savers.
  17. In a Chicago mood today: Art Ensemble: The Meeting (Pi) Gene Ammons: Jug (OJC)
  18. Roy Eldridge: Little Jazz (Vogue - Japanese reissue)
  19. Scott Phillips' The Ice Storm - Every character in this novel (with the exception of a little girl) is a total dirtbag, with no redeeming qualities. Maybe I'm abnormal, but I usually like to feel some connection with some character in a novel. (I guess if I were a total dirtbag, I might have felt some connection here.) I kept reading this because I wanted to find out what was going to happen. I finished reading it, found out what happened, and I'm sure I'll never open this book again.
  20. Miles at the Blackhawk (Mosaic) - Saturday, sets 3 & 4
  21. Anyone interested in the country/jazz thing might want to check out Homer & Jethro's Playing It Straight. Also, Kenneth "Jethro" Burns' recordings on Flying Fish and Acoustic Disc are good listens.
  22. Oscar Aleman
  23. Haven't been to Cambridge in 10 years or so, but I used to stop in at Stereo Jack's when I made my yearly visit to my friends who worked at Rounder Records. I do remember copping a N.Y. Contemporary 5 Fontana LP there. I still have it and listen to it. Thanks, Jack. and welcome.
  24. Happy birthday tomorrow - less than 3 hours away. Hope that it's a great day for you!
  25. Happy birthday! Hope that the next year brings you more listening and posting time.
