  1. Oliphant is a very nice guy. . . . He's a stone cold Kenny Dorham freak. He's retiring in a few months I believe. That book is hard work. . . but a good one.
  2. Got the Joe Gallant "Music of the Grateful Dead and Beyond, Live Volume 2" on Relix cheap, and am digging it. So far "Terrapin" is my favorite of the three. Interesting stuff for Deadheads. Right now am listneing to a highlight of the Download Series, "Black Peter," on Download Series Vol. 2, from Springer Inn, 1/18/70. This is a good show. . . this is a great version of this tune, the "mood" is perfect. Killer Pigpen in this volume too on "Big Boss Man," "Good Lovin'" and "Hard to Handle."
  3. I'll find a cd copy eventually. I always dug Creach with JA. .. he added an element of surprise mostly, and all his stuff fit in one way or another, sometimes just gliding over chaos. He makes Silver for me, that and the lyrics on that lp. It's better than I remembered, listening to it now, surely not a masterpiece but better than many another rock lps; the RCA cd sounds pretty good.
  4. Well, the J A Loves You box set is pretty good for the band itself. I've no interest in Starship (outisde Blow Against) and I've got the side projects I need. B, Thirty Seconds may not be great. Everyone says Long John sucks and I got it recently and quite like it. I always did quite like it. I can't remember Thirty Seconds though. .. probably rolled too man and lit them. But I'd like to get an affordable cd copy to complete my Airplane collection. All I see for sale though are expensive imports. Who knows, I might like it quite a bit. Stranger things happen.
  5. I'm a big fan of Grave's writing. I think I read all I could lay my hands on in my twenties, and revisited some of them in the years afterwards. A great scholar and author. My favorites? His translation of "The Golden Ass" and his "King Jesus."
  6. I got Volume Two tonight as well. Looks great! THANKS!
  7. I'm enjoying this. I steered clear for a while because of some bad PR but I think it's cool! Now I just need to find a copy of "30 Seconds Over Winterland". . . that I can afford.
  8. Many more happy ones Laton!
  9. Sellout? Not really. . . just enjoying and being open? Muddleheaded? NOT ON THIS BOARD. Thanks for sharing "new directions in music."
  10. Enemy record label seems to have gone away!
  11. "Truth, Justice and the UPCOMING ELECTIONS!"
  12. SOSDE! (Same Old Shit, Different Edition!)
  13. This album and its sister album have been discussed at length recently on the board.
  14. NO, no Hamilton Beach Scovill!
  15. Great photos!
  16. Actually, I had the opportunity to listen this afternoon. Still no-go for me on the Limbo jazz, but there is some lovely playing on the album. Hawk on 'Mood Indigo' more than makes up for the Limbo stuff, I guess. But boy, that Limbo riff is going to be stuck in my head the rest of the day
  17. Actually, Diz does break new ground with Bossa Nova here in this set, only the sessions weren't released until after others got bossa nova out there and made a name of it. . . . He also fuses some carribean style material into his small group jazz conception which I don't think was often done before him . . . . Some really cool albums amongst those in this set.
  18. "Limbo Jazz" is the one everyone loves! Give it another shot. . . it's all good.
  19. My friend received his set Tuesday night and is ecstatic about it. He had a lot of this on cd and lp and he says the sound is fantastic, the booklet is great, and he wasn't even upset that one whole corner of the box was crushed by the shipper. I was a bit upset about that, but Mosaic is of course mailing him a replacement. Can't beat their service.
  20. I'm gonna skip it. Never really liked the Reeves movies, I'm not a big Superman fan. Looks like one to miss. People tell me plot elements of this that seem really lame. I have been missing movies all summer for logistic reasons so this one will be just one of many I'll miss.
  21. I remember watching a few episodes as they aired on PBS here and enjoying them. The books. I LOVE the books by Graves.
  22. Soon thou mayest perforce change thine avatar and moniker:
  23. I'm not sure OJC COULD release that Mingus these days. It has been a Japanese cd (slightly truncated).
  24. Probably a pair of slippers the lp photographer rounded up somewhere!
  25. Good gosh! You're so old now a "brewery day" is not a good idea! Beware of premature aging! Many many more happy ones!
