  1. I had forgotten about the info in the box set, which is back home and I'm here in Houston; would be nice to be able to pick the book up and read it this afternoon. I guess Albert told her he was going to jump off the ferry? If she is credible here (and why wouldn't she be?) then this really seems to eliminate foul play. It's all such a shame. Such a tragedy, really.
  2. I mainly download from iTunes material that is out of print or more expensive to find than iTunes, or only available via digital media; most of my purchases have been Verve Vault titles (lots more expensive on the Japanese cds they are sourced from) and Grateful Dead Download Series items (not available in the cd format). I have recently joined eMusic and am using it mainly because I'm away from my home and collection for a few more months and it's easy to download and listen on my iBook in waiting rooms and in our little studio apartment. I'll probably buy the cds of my favorite of the downloads when I return to my normal life!
  3. I know you're not. That's the OTHER BIRD though. The Yellow Bird.
  4. Seems like he was a ranch hand somewhere in CaliforneyeA.
  5. I remember being amazed when viewing a Konitz discography online that there are sizable chunks of Verve recordings, entire sessions, unreleased ever. Shiverin' timbers! Would be good to hear some of those.
  6. Evan, an intriguing character. . . I only know of one photo I've ever seen on the internet, attached below. no real information to share I'm afraid. Interested to know more as well.
  7. WELL, it sounds better than SOME live Bird. Better than that one Birdology for example where Bird plays in front of Diz's big band. . . !
  8. Well. . . since it's YOU asking Al, here you go: This discography includes only U.S. issue numbers, with two exceptions. Alternate takes were sometimes used on the French releases of the Apollo sessions on Jazz Selection (78s) and Vogue (LPs). All Vogue LPs use the same masters as the JS 78s. Where they differ from the masters, those takes will be noted for clarification. When EMI Pathe Marconi reissued Jacquet's Aladdin album LP 803 in the early eighties, they used the same catalog number but expanded the contents. That issue is listed as (F) 803. __________________________________________________ _______________ (A) Russell Jacquet (tp, vcl-1), Henry Coker (tb), Illinois Jacquet (ts), Arthur Dennis (bari), Sir Charles Thompson (p), Ulysses Livingston (g), Billy Hadnott (b), Johnny Otis (d). Because of this, jazz scolars, researchers and serious collectors have come to trust the word "complete" when it appears in a Mosaic album title. This set, however, is an exception. Illinois Jacquet listened to this music to provide us with discographical information. Watching him listen to this body of work with rightful pride and impassioned joy is an experience we will never forget. However, he became very dismayed upon hearing "Don't Push Daddy". Even though the track was released by Aladdin a couple of year's after Illinois left the label, he was extremely unhappy with the performance then and feels that its inclusion would only serve to blemish the great music in this set. Mr. Jacquet requested that we remove it, and, out of respect for his wishes, it does not appear here. The sonic quality of the masters contained in this set varies drastically. On some of the Aladdin and RCA material, the original acetates or metal parts were found and used. In most other cases, existing tape transfers from acetates were used. With the Apollo sessions, no master source material existed. These masters were transferred from various Apollo and Jazz Selection 78s and Apollo and Grand Award LPs. While a de-hisser and a Cedar de-clicker was used on most of this set, no attempt was made to lessen surface noise by means of a Sonic Solutions or Cedar system. To be effective, such devices tend to take away much of the mid range, overtones and ambience of the original recordings. Produced for release by Michael Cuscuna Executive producer: Charlie Lourie Tape and disc transfers and technical continuity: Malcolm Addey Mastering: Joe Brescio, Master Cutting Room Design direction: Richard Mantel Design production: InkWell, Inc. Special thanks to Illinois Jacquet for making the music in the first place and for his care and help in preparing this set, to the Institute Of Jazz Studios, Johs Bergh, David Schwartz, Scott Wenzel and Phil Schaap for furnishing rare source materials, to Bergh for two important Savoy discographical discoveries and to Bob Porter for his invaluable input. All Apollo masters (sessions B, C, G & J) are under license from Delmark Records. All Savoy masters (sessions E & F) are under license from Denon/Nippon Columbia Co. 9. Wow, I passed this thread by confusing it with another "anniversary" thread about someone's anniversary of his discovering jazz. . . . Congratulations to you both! I have some sort of a sense of what an accomplishment that is and I'm probably understimating the scope and magnitude! Best of everything to you both!
  10. Jim, Brenda, the best of all possible realities to you both! I'm in a happy and challenging and fulfililng relationship myself that gets stronger the more it breathes. . . and I wouldn't want to be otherwise. Congratulations and keep on keepin' on!
  11. Many many more good and happy ones!
  12. I like Stevie Wonder using it. . . either before or after these cats. But was that really a "vocoder"? Wikipedia shows this: Seems more "Kraftwerky" to me.
  13. Just realized that supposedly the Viola Lee Blues from this show is a bonus cut on the remastered cd of the first album. That's good news!
  14. Thanks for the link. Wish I'd downloaded that when I had the chance!
  15. The books are fantastic, in my opinion. Some of my very favorite detective fiction. The few episodes of the tv show I saw really fell flat for me. Too Brit for Maigret!
  16. I think they should have called that "The Legend of Charlie Parker" or some such. . . . I like it a lot for what it IS and viewed in that manner. Glad it got made. Probably should buy a copy to watch. . . haven't seen it in a while. Scott, lots of good Red Rodney to explore. If you don't have the Savoy sides get 'em. And all the Muse releases I've heard (nearly, mabye all of them) are good jazz to hear.
  17. Well, we'll agree to disagree. . . . I believe Mairgret was more of an inspiration for the Clouseau character than Poirot. I guess only Edwards knows/knew.
  18. Right, Viola Lee Blues is supposed to be from 4/26/69. . . it's not on the Dick's Picks of that show though. (Volume 26).
  19. That's Gigi. Mrs. Bill Laswell. Formerly Ms Ejigayehu Shibabaw. Her latest:
  20. Maigret came first.
  21. I'm going to have to get this Select. I have everything else either on Japanese cd or on vinyl. . . but I don't have all of the Rowles. And. . .well. . .that's not a good situation.
  22. I'm going to have to get this Select. I have everything else either on Japanese cd or on vinyl. . . but I don't have all of the Rowles. And. . .well. . .that's not a good situation.
  23. Damned straight it does! Made me order "Dick's Picks Vol. 26"!
  24. Now it's "Fallout from the Phil Zone." I am so glad I picked this up a few months ago. I don't know how I lived without this for so long. That "Midnight Hour." Wow. I bet the whole show is killer. Maybe we'll get to hear it one day. Long live Pigpen!
  25. Oliphant is a very nice guy. . . . He's a stone cold Kenny Dorham freak. He's retiring in a few months I believe. That book is hard work. . . but a good one.
