I was confused about the Lonehill contents, sorry about that. The sound on Water is better than the Jazzview. . . considerably!
  2. It's a mono recording, for sure.

I don't know about the Lonehill cd, I've read suspicions that it is missing a track. If you can find "Albert Smiles with Sunny" THAT is the one to get. But it's hard to find! The two ESP single discs are pretty good overall. I can highly recommend the Water release of the Fondation Maeght material. EXCELLENT! And "Music is the Healing Force of the Universe". . . I like. Your mileage may vary. It's sort of a mixed bag, with moments both ways, but the great moments are wonderful!
  4. Well all I can say is that in the period of time that I was associated with the University they didn't seem to know how to motivate undergraduates, and their programs needed a lot of attention that they didn't receive because the glory was in the graduate programs. I have a lot of respect for various aspects of the place. And I did meet my wife there (though we were just friends, and became romantic about 17 years later!) and some good friends. BUT all those I was close to there either failed to be inspired to continue there, or completed their education there and were pretty soured by the process. Too bad!
  5. I agree Eric, I think that when another tune is alluded to it is more effective. To me this seems to have been a humorous game or test of skill and knowledge to the early beboppers (though Pops was quoting Gershwin before them, it was going on before that and I'm sure the inventor of the game is long gone) and I really like the way Bird and Bags did it for example.
  6. Have you tried ordering from Fresh Sounds? http://www.freshsoundrecords.com/search.ph...&artist_id=1399
  7. This is a Fresh Sounds/Pujol cd. Looks to me as if www.amazon.fr has nine copies. . . .
  8. Many more happy returns and no saudade ever again! :rsmile:
  9. You'll dig the Bopland set! Many more happy ones Brad!
  10. John A. Wilson, "The Culture of Ancient Egypt" (also published as "The Burden of Egypt.") Quite a good read. This is the sort of material from the University of Chicago that made me choose that school to go to. . . . I made a big mistake. I should have gone there for GRADUATE work in archaeology. Undergraduate programs at U of C BITE. Or bit. . . back in the first half of the seventies I should say.
  11. None the less, it has not been released by Blue Note ever. B-)
  12. Lately "Memphis Blues" as done by Louis Armstrong and Velma Middleton is one of my very favorites. I've had this SACD going for some time now. . . on and off, and this tune KILLS on that. And then I had to dig out the Babs Gonzales version. . . which kills me too!
  13. You mean. . . John Lee is NOT a better guitarist? Yes. . . . Hey let's give him the benefit of the doubt, he'd rather hear the music recorded differently. He should just drink and smoke more before listening. . . .
  14. Yes, and Kaiser Marshall too. Agustin and others here pretty much say it all. I find that I don't listen to much Fletcher these days and haven't gone the complete route on Classics/Neatwork with him. . . maybe someday! I've got the GRP, RCA, Forte, and Columbia cds mentioned here and a few others, and it's a good collection that holds me!
  15. Now if we could just get rid of that damned thread with the babies! Do we really want people coming to this board who are looking for baby pictures? (I'm half joking. Personally I'd rather look at babes than babies).
  16. There is now talk of a 1972 to 1975 box set; the Seven Steps is the last of the originally planned box sets.
  17. Hmmmm. . . well, I guess res gustibus nondisputandum est. . . I'm not a Mickey Hart fan, and I prefer Wake to any album that preceded it. But that's cool! I hope I don't have to wait too long for remasters of the first three albums in the box set!
  18. I really think that Wake of the Flood is an excellent album. . . It was the first that came out under their own label, and everything was different about it: the weight of the vinyl, the production, the sound. . . . I think it holds up very well. Blues for Allah, Ace and Mars Hotel share this sort of vibe . . . They are the studio lps I value the most.
  19. I have a Sonor Performer set, pewter finish, but I can't bring myself to sell it or parts of it. . . .
  20. I really like the Kid Ory, and I think you will too. A working band, a solid and sure group that knows the material and each other. Traditional repretoire done without a sense of "preservation." GREAT sound.
  21. Believe it or not, the first person I have ever seen that pointed out this spelling error online is DEEP (Danny D'Imperio) several years ago.
  22. Well, they were studio jams that were similar in some ways to the JATP on stage jams. Usually long selections with stars of the Granz stable combined. 1 and 2 were the great alto player jams (Hodges, Parker et al), 3 and 4 had Basie at the keys and players such as DeFranco and Getz and Gray and Smith and Jones, etc. Most of the really good guys that Granz produced had a turn here or there. As a body of work it's quite interesting and impressive. . . some volumes better than others of course, but I've been waiting for a nice package like this for some time!
  23. I've been considering the sale of my copies of the first twenty Dukes on Chronogical Classics as well. Anyone that wants to give me a little personal nudge is welcome to. . .
  24. Looks to me as if there's nothing extra, and they're not LOADED discs (two jams per disc on four discs, on on the last. . . . At least they're at a good price here. . . .
