    Sun Ra

I think L. Ron Hubbard stole his ideas. Must have been able to get into the safe in the ship.
  2. You better! Thanks for letting us know!
  3. Nina Simone, Carmen McRae, Jeri Southern.
  4. Yes, for Lady Be Good and for How High the Moon. . . Lady Be Good is almostg enoupgh alone but you have to have How High the Moon! I haven't heard the Mendes but it should be good.
  5. I'm a big Lars fan and I've enjoyed the Swedish jazz I have discovered.

    Jazz & Blues

It's not very simple and there aren't definitive answers (if you ask me). Blues and jazz. . . which came first? Depends on definitions. . . . My money is on blues as a forerunner. Jazz could have numerous wellsprings. . . ragtime. . . nineteenth century brass bands. . . opera? Certainly blues. Anyway, there's reading material out there on the California, New Orleans and other early jazz scenes that make very interesting reading!
  10. By the way, all the time I've been "Super Bad". . . I've felt sort of as if I could be punished at any time!
  11. Mike, any mention of the mono session tapes for Mingus Presents. . . ?
  12. Yes.
  13. Well, at the moment my booklet for the cd set is AWOL. That might have some information. I just listened to the cd version on headphones and in my HHB burner which allows me to look at volume levels. The two channels do show some slight variation in level but not much, and the images are centered. . . it's a mono source, there is no separation. The sounds is very different from that on the DA Music cds; there the source is clearly stereo. Not sure what is up but my guess is there's a difference between the lp and cd masters on the Mosaic sets.
  14. I'm pretty certain that the Mingus Presents sessions is in MONO on the cd box set, just listened to half of it. . . . Sounds great, I agree about the very natural sound, I'm sure the lp set slays the cds but the cds are no slouch, very very good sound for digital of its time frame!
  15. Well, Brothers and Other Mothers Vol 1 was on ebay for a very reasonable "buy it now". . . It's going to be on the way to my house!
  16. Reiner: the "Sings Johnny Mercer" sounds VERY NICE. I'd welcome many more on this label.
  17. Thanks for the information Brownie and Chuck. Wow. or rather WOW! Sumpin' to look for.
  18. Some great names tossed out here. Definitely agree about Al Haig. How about Mel Powell. And Jimmy Rowles. Those guys get talked about, but both deserve better recognition.
  19. You know the Miles material must be considered "legitimate" because when the estate clamped down on the sale of dozens of bootlegs, the Dragon set was still present offered for sale by the chains and I was told by two jazz buyers that this set was "allowed."
  20. Must agree with Vic, Dragon is a great label and I love the releases I have. Great notes and production values as well as sound.
  21. David, how many sides are there? I know there is one track (Churchmouse) on "The Savoy Story" three cd set. I love his sideman appearances on the Winding and Moore cuts on the "In the Beginning Bop" Savoy/Denon cd.
  22. Good call DIS!
  23. Terry Pollard
  24. Don't make me Choose! Not exactly a newbie question, but a question about jazz music. I used to play jazz at a state office supply store I worked at for years and several times when playing early jazz I got asked: "What cartoon did that music come from?" ARGH!
