And when you keep on thinking openly, as Miles' soloing and other aspects of his playing changed all throughout his playing life; what was "Miles Davis" was a plastic fantastic thing.

Hey, not many of us can spin the original Notes and be lost in that sound locked in forever. The RVGs do in many cases have that boldness and that strength of sound that I hear in original Notes when I can hear them, more so than other digital releases to my ears of the material (the TOCJs sound great, but they're sort of greywashed to all sound the same to my ears). Sure, they're different, but this is not 1965 no mo' and they are NOT in surround sound or anything such. So. . . I'm a digital guy and these are good digital ammunition to feed into my source. . . . I'm buying them all. They get the job done for me.

Hmmm. . . I've never seen the cd, it's a great lp. I was just looking at a copy of "The Greatest Trumpet of Them All" at the Austin Record Convention Saturday; it was too expensive for me to consider purchasing, but it sure looked as if it sounded great!

Hmmm. . . not all of those were at 5 dollars when I looked this morning! I've since decided to hold off . . . I have five of them now, six if you count my Stash copy of "Best Of" and haven't heard them all yet. . . .

I'm plagued with regret that I didn't get two items (though I would have had to come back yesterday because I didn't have enough cash on hand Saturday, and I would have had a whole different Sunday and this week if I had gone back). One was Slim Gaillards last recording date, the one with Budd Johnson, on cd. The other was a sealed three lp box of fifteen minute shows for radio about Ellington; there was a selection or two played, and then an interview with folk like Mercer Ellington and Joya Sherrill. . . there was quite a bit of Joya Sherrill interviewing going on. . . I wished I'd just had an extra 35 bucks when I had it in my hands!

I agree, I mentioned that the Lancaster was beautiful in the opening post, and I still think so!

Morgan/Shorter and Chambers/Kelly Vee Jays

I'm glad I don't have to choose between the Wilson and the Chambers/Kelly! I'd need them both! Neither is more repititive than the other if you count all those Kelly Trio alternates. . . . -
I only know of one volume of the Autobiography, long long out of print; was in a pocketbook style paperback book. . . . A kind boardmember let me borrow it to read; it was an adventure!

The Classics has the following sides (Apollo and Manor I believe) not on the Blue Note cd: Roy's Groove Phipps' Deep Everything Is Cool 1280 Special A Lesson On Bopology Loop-Phy-E-Du Honeysuckle Bop A Choice Taste The Blue Note has the following not on the Classics (are these all the Jimmy Smith sides? maybe I can't remember precisely): 'Round About Midnight You Need Connections Encore Encore Wonderful stuff, all of it!

The overlap is big. . . and there are things on each that are not on the other. If you can only have one, I'd say the Classics indeed. It also has the benefit of being in print. . . !

That Babs Chronogical Classics (sic) is DA BOMB. Git It.

Unless you are a piano trio loving fiend (guilty as charged) or a Wynton Kelly fanatic bordering on NUT (uhm. . .guilty again) go for the Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter one first. . . . -
Laughing my ass off just thinking of one of my nephews playing the braithaphone in his house. . . ! That would be chickens coming home to roost for my LOUD-when-a-kid brother!

Hmmm. . . have you been fingering your balance knob? There is something on my right channel, but the staging bias is definitely heavily to the left.

I love old pianos too. Though at the moment they are sort of a sore spot. I've enjoyed old pianos in the church my father "pastored" in Burton Ohio for thirty years. And I've always wanted one of my own. My wife's aunt died recently; Helen's aunt had inherited her own uncle's Steinway grand "reproducing" piano, built in the twenties, and that is one FINE instrument! Helen was offered the piano. . . I was not sleeping well at nights trying to negotiate getting that piano to our home. First I convinced my wife by actually rearranging the living room and putting up boxes in the appropriate area that we COULD fit the piano into our living room and still "live." Ultimately I lost out, because my father-in-law refused to ship it to us unless we ALSO took a nineteenth century dining room set and a lot of other furniture from this huge Chicago house her aunt had lived in most of her life, and we would have to get a larger house, and we simply COULDN'T afford that even if we WANTED to move somewhere else, which we really and truly DON'T want to do. So we passed on the Steinway. . .and I had a hard time sleeping again. . . til my wife announced we could buy a digital piano and we shopped around and settled on my new P120S. It's no Stienway, but it amazed me how good it sounds, it does play convincingly like a real hammer and strings and big harp piano and can also do so many things. . . .

I got this batch this weekend and really love the sound on these. This may be my FAVORITE batch of RVGs, sonicswise; I think he did a great job. The Newk's Time I think must have been one of the earliest stereo efforts, and he didn't get it right, for sure. Occasionally I get some bass notes out of the right channel but that is just about it. However I must say that Rollins sounds pretty scarily real at times! It's good sound, maybe it would have been better to use the mono reel! (I bet Michael had to keep Rudy from doing so!)

Thanks for posting that! Was great to see Tubby getting some love from core Ellingtonians!

That was my reaction as well, the remastering made me enjoy the sextet side much more than I had in the past. J. J. even sounded eerily real in his solos. . . I think RVG really nailed the sound on this batch of reissues! I was struck also at how rich the sound of the quintet was, especially when Woody was playing low notes. Great writing on Horace's part and great execution from all on both sessions.

Pre-ordered the Jazz Oracle three cd "Complete Red Heads" and the Jerry Garcia box set from cduniverse. Lotsa dollars out of my mad money budget to come!

Mixed bag or NOT, I sure wish someone would get around to reissuing that Earl Hines!

Finally got the RVG of this one this weekend. I think RVG really nailed the sound in this batch; this RVG sounds GREAT. I really enjoyed listening to this session again; I purposedly avoided listening to it for the last few months waiting for the reissue; it was worth the wait. Larry Willis really came on strong on his recording debut! For me he makes the title track happen, ably abetted by some mighty fine drumming by Mr. Jarvis! I really like the sound of the piano on this cd!

I bought a copy of the Lewis Mosaic from Mosaic shortly after Charles Lourie died; it was apparently an extra promo copy that he had in his collection. . . paid the 45 dollar face value for the set. Was so happy to do so!

Listened to this one yesterday, with great joy! I think the remastering is great, an improvement over the previous domestic cd, and I have great love for the music!

Finally got all the March RVGs in and listened to this this weekend. Wow, in my opinion it sounds REALLY GOOD (well, my stereo is blessing everything with great sound lately, but I think this last dozen RVGs sound extra good). I really like the way that Cecil's piano sound is so markedly different from say Horace's of the same time, and the remastering displays this. Quite a nice session. . . this is right on the edge of where Cecil Taylor's music escapes me for now. . . . After this it gets harder for me to enjoy at all, BUT I know that there will come a time. . . . I do listen to later Taylor and I know I'll find a way towards enjoyment.

When I tried last week there were about five that WERE in stock, but would not show up as part of the five dollar sale and would not ring up at five dollars even if you had three or so other five dollars in your basket. Hopefully that won't be the case when these others are back in stock. . . I may or may not order more. . . I'm way over budget with a huge family thing to pay for coming up . . . !
