  1. Well DAMNIt, it's not in STEREO! B) (But then again, I wouldn't want to change the magic sound this has.)
  2. No, I haven't heard that one. I've heard a few of the Muses and his work with Tony Williams, but I haven't been too impressed til this one. I liked his work elsewhere but this I like a bit more.
  3. Okay, I'll freely admit it, I've been listening to a Wallace Roney cd and enjoying it somewhat. . . . This from 2000, No Room For Argument, is interesting. Sure he plays as if he were Miles. If you look closely at the liners, there is a quote from II Kings that would lead one to infer that he thinks of himself as taking the prophetic mantle from Miles as Elisha did from Elijah. And the music is definitely MILESIAN in a Nefertit-Filles de Kilamanjaro-Waterbabies-Bitches Brew sort of way (with a few Oberheim like organ-synth blasts thrown in to Get Up With It-ize a minute or two.) But with Mrs. Roney (Geri Allen) and Buster Williams and Lenny White and others it's not just throwaway music. It does represent a tiny little updating of the style of the material from its Milesian roots, perhaps. . . or perhaps not. I still find myself enjoying the texture and the playing, and even enjoying the fact that it IS so Milesian! So I'm divided about this. I clearly enjoy it. I also feel it's somewhat of a waste for someone to emulate so closely the work of another, and not really have much more than just imitation as a result! Anyone else hear this and have impressions?
  4. Catesta, I still struggle with those two as well. They're probably not overrated, but I don't get pleasure out of listening to them.
  5. Okay I watched the video, didn't bother to listen to it. . . . Could this be PARODY?
  6. Vive la difference! For me, Herbie Nichols. . . always STIMULATING!
  7. I haven't yet heard this ---and would only be able to report on the cd layer anyway. . . . But I do have a copy of the JRVG and really like the remastering there best of the cd versions before it, even though the stereo spread is a little on the narrow side for most tastes. . . I bet this is widened in this release.
  8. John, that's how I feel too, that contrast was a very strong factor for the musical stew in my opinion. And Miles looked for and used a similart contrast for most of the music he made in the decades to come.
  9. Welcome Evan! I'll recommend "Louis Armstrong Plays W. C. Handy" and Charles Mingus "East Coasting." Two recordings I can see a Lee Morgan fan digging! Guess I don't do the K-word because I don't know what it means!
  10. "Blues in Orbit" has been out on hybrid SACD for about three years, maybe four? It was one of the last Mobile Fidelity titles released before they went belly up and then came back under new ownership. I'd like to see a little box set of the Chico Hamilton and Charles Lloyd releases, and the rest of the Brubeck catalog, and the rest of the Monk catalog. (The latter two are stronger possibilities!)
  11. Post away!
  12. I am not a jazz guru on any board! But I don't hear his playing as shakey on almost any of the recordings. Different yes, seeking, questing, cautious, maybe even unconfident, but not shakey. USED to hear it that way a bit but don't any longer.
  13. though the sound bugs me a little. . . . Not a crucial thing though.
  14. Looks focused enough for me! Thanks for the Una Mae photo as well.
  15. I get separate links Mnytime. Yeah, probably they shouldn't have been there. . . but they can lay a claim to being there. . . they're sort of box sets.
  16. For me it's the Moncurs. Just never have seemed as great to me as everyone else seems to find them. But then few here get excited as I do about the Hodes dates, so vive la difference!
  17. Una Mae Carlisle. . . wish there were dozens of pictures of her available on the net! I really dig her playing and singing.
  18. Very cool photo Chris!
  19. I'll agree that this stuff is subversive in its way. Nice analogy. It's really very interesting stuff.
  20. I really like these sessions. The vocals are on neither of those you mention, but on "How Insensitive." They are not like the vocals on "Life Every Voice!" But I like them. But then I'm different! The Brazilian inspired items on this (and on other Pearson sessions) I find among the best of these years of Blue Note's history. And the Xmas album is my favorite Xmas album.
