  1. Continuing my re-visit of the second half of Yes’ career. . .“The Ladder” Eagle cd . . . .
  2. A warm day–55 degrees right now! I was outside doing a few chores, and Lucinda had a PT appointment we went to. Finally I get to sit down in front of the system for a bit. I dug this 2 cd set out this week to listen to, it’s been a while. A killer band. . . I sort of think the two synth players are a bit unnecessary, but if Stan wanted them why not. Supposedly the last recorded concert for Stan. Stan Getz “The Final Concert Recording” Eagle cd disc 1
  3. I have the V-Disc box set and the Transcription five volumes so I'm covered (which as an Ellington nut makes me feel good).
  4. Eddie Condon “Town Hall Concerts Vol. 2” Jazzology 2 cd set disc 2
  5. David Bowie “The Next Day” from the “I Can’t Give Everything Away” box set. Somehow listening to Bowie makes me feel like a teenager again, even though this one was originally bought right before I moved from Texas to Ohio, and also brings back the stress and emotional shift of that transition. Bowie was an amazing artist. 869×1024 98.7 KB
  6. Pulled out another Dick Cary to listen to. Great for this early morning stillness. 500×500 71.3 KB Dick Cary’s Tuesday Night Friends “Got Swing?” Arbors Jazz cd
  7. Two more Blue Note 85th Anniversary discs from Japan have hit the transport. First Lou Donaldson “Blues Walk” SHM-SACD 640×480 73.2 KB Then Freddie Hubbard “Ready for Freddie”
  8. Johny Coles, “Little Johnny C” on Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversay UHQCD.
  9. Duke Ellington “Vol 6 1929” Masters of Jazz Media 7 cd. This one sounds best to me with Phase reversed on my DAC. I feel an early Ellington jag coming on. It happens. This music is so full of joy and wit and bravado and grace. . . wonderful stuff.
  10. Jimmy McGriff “Electric Funk” Blue Note Japan cd Jimmy McGriff – electronic organ Blue Mitchell – trumpet Stanley Turrentine – tenor saxophone Horace Ott – electric piano, arranger Unknown – guitar Chuck Rainey – electric bass Bernard Purdie – drums From 1969. “Groovy” is the word that comes to mind for me when this one plays. I wish I knew who the guitarist was.
  11. Stan Getz with the Kenny Clarke Francy Boland Big Band “Change of Scenes” Verve “Elite” cd It’s been too long since I played this. A great soloist in front of an amazing band full of great musicians. Love it!
  12. I am sitting here comfortably in a way I haven’t since Wednesday or so. . .with a new furnace heating the house, all the house. The expense is going to be crippling in some ways in the year ahead, but the comfort and sense of security against the weather seems worth it right now. The former furnace lasted 27 years. . . I hope I get more than half of those years out of this one. Starting off a listening with disc 2 of this new release, Thelonious Monk “Bremen 1965” – a truly nice 2 cd release from Sunnyside. 185×185 10.4 KB
  13. Kenny Burrell “Midnight Blue” Blue Note/Tower Records SACD This edition sounds very nice.
  14. Grateful Dead “To Terrapin–Harford '77” Disc 1 of 3 It’s been too long since I heard some guitar from Jerry. And much longer since I listened to this show. Man, the system is really warmed up and sounding great.
  15. Bouncing in my head while I was tinkering with the cars outside was a tune from “The Spirit of Condon” – Louis Armstrong’s “Someday You’ll be Sorry.” I’ve learned the wisdom in that song a few times. Need something to push that tune out so. . . . “Count Basie & Friends–100th Birthday Bash” Roulette 2 cd set, disc 1 Pulled this from the shelves, a great collection of great Basie in that Roulette sound. 300×300 10.8 KB
  16. Some late Chicago Style. . . . “The Spirit of Condon” Jazzology cd Eddie Condon on board, with Wild Bill Davison and Art Hodes as well. Recorded in Manassas, VA 1971 and 1973
  17. Have a little time with the system again and this one caught my eye and called to me. I really like the first of the two “shows” released here. The sound quality is excellent, and “Round Midnight” is really interesting to hear. Bill Evans “Portraits at the Penthouse: Live in Seattle” Resonance Records cd IMG360×360 26.4 KB
  18. And now for something completely different, and sounding really great on the system today. Stan Kenton “New Conceptions of Artistry in Rhythm” Capitol cd
  19. Me too, very grateful.
  20. No frozen pipes! No frozen people! I’m listening a bit before going out to shovel 5 or 6 inches of snow. . . . IMG500×437 36.8 KB Joshua Reman Elastic Band “Momentum” Nonesuch cd
  21. Continuing my revisit of Yes material with “Open Your Eyes.”
  22. On to a new reissue of a session I have not listened to in too long, Manfred Schoof / Irène Schweizer /Barney Wilen “Jazz Meets India” MPS Japan cd
  23. Benny Goodman “Complete 1937 Madhattan Room Broadcasts Volume” Viper’s Nest cd From this box set:
  24. I have and enjoy all nine volumes in this series: https://www.discogs.com/label/441012-Svensk-Jazzhistoria
  25. Sorry . . . having no heat and having to shell out 8500 for a new furnace has my brain a little fuzzy as a defense against reallity. Right now Bob Wilbur and the Tuxedo Big Band of Toulouse, France "Unrecorded Fletcher Henderson Arrangements for Benny Goodman" Arbor Jazz cd Fun, swinging stuff.
