Starting off a rainy morning with Branford Marsalis Qartet’s new one on Blue Note, “Belonging”–the Quartet re-interprests the Jarrett album with pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Eric Revis, and drummer Justin Faulkner. Very nice. Hope the rain goes away. . .we’re supposed to go to Chagrin Falls for a “Hands Off” event this afternoon with a few neighbors.

I saw the Basie Orchestra about this time in Chicago in a Catholic Church near the University of Chicago which I was attending. I had wanted to go to the concert with the woman who seventeen years later became my first wife, but someone else had asked her first. I remember loving the show. . . and also watching her as much as I could out with the other guy. I was always drawn to her like a magnet. I think that emotional activity causes me to really remember the band’s performance. This disc has real dynamics. A great recording.
