  1. "The Classical Jazz Quartet plays Bach" Bass – Ron Carter Drums – Lewis Nash Piano – Kenny Barron Producer, Arranged By – Bob Belden Vibraphone – Stefon Harris
  2. "Bud Shank/Shorty Rogers--Bud Shank/Bill Perkins" Pacific Jazz Toshiba Superbit Jazz Classics LP facsimle cd. Two different sessions, and an alternate from the second. Jimmy Rowles on piano on the first, Hampton Hawes on the second. . . hard to get better West Coast piano playing.
  3. I'm watching Mindhunters Season 2 and Season 1 of The Man in the High Castle. I tried The Man in the High Castle when it first came out but didn't get into it. I revere the book itself so much that I was not willing to put up with this alternate version of an alternate historical time line. But enough time has passed and the series is completed and I am enjoying it more this time, my mind having had time to get over the profound differences and see the grim reality of the Amazon series as a past we've escaped and I'm enjoying the production values quite a bit. I really enjoyed Mindhunter's first season and this second one is shaping up to be as powerful.

Unlike Kevin I found significant differences between the Audio Wave XRCDs and the TOCJ Works cds on my system. I have collected all but about 4 of the Audio Wave.
  5. Didn't get to fire up the stereo at all yesterday, and only for an hour or so on Saturday, so being able to plant myself in front of it today is a great thing. And it sounds stupendous this morning. First up Zoot Sims "Choice" Pacific Jazz/Toshiba Superbit Jazz Classics lp facsimile cd from Japan. Followed by Richard Williams "New Horn in Town" Candid/Solid Records Japan mono mix cd
  6. I have the cd version. Sounds very good--I have bought all but one of their releases (have the one I did not buy in a Japanese version) and I have no complaints with the mastering/sound quality.
  7. I pretty much have spent thirty years developing systems at home and currently my own intuition is instrumental in guiding me to incremental changes. I've used Decware components for the most part for pre- and amplification and speakers, and their forums and the friendships I have made with members and owners there and the builder have been influential in the directions I choose which often have a lot to do with tube substitutions and gain experimentation. And having Decware components have shown me that high quality sources are beneficial and over a decade ago PS Audio showed me their mettle in that regard after quite a journey trying digital sources and I have followed their product line development for improvements. I could go on but audiophile talk here usually gets met with derision or distaste or insult and ridicule and I'll just say no more right now. Tired of that sort of stuff.
  8. I'm of the same age, and after losing my first spouse 13 years ago and realizing how fleeting life is I have had no hesitation in keepng competent reliable audio equipment and making improvements to my system as music is a primary joy. . . and life is not guaranteed and always too short, and I don't deny myself principle pleasures and enhancements are welcome. Some SACDs that I have are phenomenal sounding--Miles and Duke and Mingus and Coltrane and Armstrong and Santana and Dylan et al. A pleasure to hear, and the preferred version. SACD playback is worth exploring if time and money allow.
  9. That "couple of years ago" was probably ten or more. Available SACDs are mainly back catalog, some new but classical mostly. For instance: https://store.acousticsounds.com/cat/4/SACD Some new releases in other genres. This label for instance: https://www.psaudio.com/octave-records/
  10. Yes. Probably more than you imagine. Major labels. . . not so much. Audiophile labels mostly.
  11. Another 24bit by RVG Blue Note Japan cd that arrived today from "bresna," Sonny Clark "Leapin' and Lopin'"
  12. Jackie McLean "Bluesnik" 24bit by RVG Blue Note cd from Japan. This is newly arrived in the mail--I have other versions and this one sounds very good.
  13. Karl Berger "Crystal Fire" Enja/Solid Records Japan cd
  14. Well, the box was the first of their sort of annual big box set releases and because it was such classic and lauded material it sold out fast and has commanded high prices in resale markets ever since. Among the faithful I've seen lots of queries of "why don't they just redo the damned thing!" and although I don't think I've seen an official response the assumed answer is that they don't plan on doing that, period. They mean these sets to be limited and have stuck to their guns. I'd love to see it redone. In a moment of idiocy I let mine go. I certainly would love to have a Plangent Process remaster of the "Live/Dead" release with some extra material. I have not seen an official reason why we haven't had one, nor a statement we won't. I have a nice SHM-CD version from Japan I listen to when I get the itch and don't want to hear my original vinyl 2 LP with its snap crackle and pop.
  15. No argument from me. I hope we see a reissue. But they skipped over it. . . we'll see.
  16. My guess is that it is related to the fact that they are sticking to their guns about keeping the '69 Fillmore box set (and I guess material} from being reissued.
  17. William Parker: "The Music of William Parker--Migration of Silence into and out of the Tone World" disc 7 Lots of accapelo voice by one masterful singer, Lisa Sokolov, often multi-tracked.
  18. "The Complete Pacific Jazz Live Recordings of the Chet Baker Quartet with Russ Freeman" Mosaic records, cd 2 You can hear why this Quartet was a fascination at the time--they had a new and charming thing going on.
  19. "Jazz Reunion" Pee Wee Russell/Coleman Hawkins et al, Candid/Solid Records mono mix Japan cd
  20. This is one of my favorite Brazilian jazz cds. . . it has such a nice breezy feel to it but is also full of delicious chops served up saucily. Jovino Santos Neto "Current"
  21. Sure. But somehow if it isn't a show from Europe. . . it just wouldn't be almost exactly perfect.
  22. Ha, good question. Just reissue it straight I would guess. Or maybe they'll find something that escaped the suitcase. . . one never knows with this band.
  23. I agree, it should be a good reissue. I really enjoy the Plangent Process results on what they have released.
  24. Good to see you post my friend. Yes, '73 was a good year. First year I got to see them. And though first albums I got to know were "Live/Dead" and "Skull and Roses" "Wake of the Flood" was the one that really got my attention and made me listen in a new way. "Row Jimmy Row" followed by"Stella Blue!" And then "Weather Report Suite." Just great stuff studio or live.
