This morning I spent with my Dad and on the hour plus trip there and then the hour plus trip back I listened to: The debut release from Miki Yamanaka, a nice pianist with Steve Nelson on vibes. and Duke Ellington "The Pianist" This afternoon Fiona the dachshund and I toughed the hot weather upstairs to listen to: Helen Merrill "You and the Night and the Music" Wynton Marsalis "The Magic Hour" Grant Green "Carryin' On" Blue Note 80th Anniversary reissue cd
-
Sony is releasing an RCA Groovy Songbirds July 24 FYI.
-
Listened this morning to: Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto, "Getz/Gilbrerto" Verve SACD Dom Um Romao "Lake of Perseverance" cd Chet Baker "Peace" Enja cd Andrew Hill "Black Fire" 80th Anniversary Blue Note Japan cd
-
Don't believe Joao was present at the Elis and Tom sessions. Oscar Castro-Neves and Helio Delmiro did the guitar duties there. In spirt? Gilberto was probably there "in spirit."

Mosaic Records is releasing a Savory collection set
jazzbo replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The recordings with Pres and Benny are in the Masters of Jazz volumes of Charlie Christian and less completely on Drive Archives and in the Columbia box set of Christian. The concert of Django with Duke has been out on Music Masters (The Chicago Concerts). -
Believe me. . . I said "some aspects." I'm still working on the problem as a whole.

Well, we'll agree to disagree. I hardly call that a "very large amount" of unreleased Blue Note material. And I do think there's a value to Michael Cuscuna's approach to honoring the "quality legacy" of the label and the integrity of an artist's work, and that this is a large component to his "choices" in the past, and it's far more complicated a process than "Mike doesn't like it."
-
I think it's a mischaracterization to say "a very large amount" of tracks have been reissued in Japan for the first time from Blue Note. More like a few handfuls at best. You'd be hard-pressed to make a full two cd set of them. I also think this is a bit of a heavy assessment of Cuscuna's process of releasing alternate and extra material. It's not just whether "he likes" a track. In conversation with me he described listening to the material with the artist or with other artist/producers and maintaining a strong sense of the label's quality control and the intentions of the artists and producers. I confess that in the past I wanted to hear every drib and drab and drop of these sessions. But now, at this stage of my life and with a collection that causes me storage and at times marital issues, this is less and less important to me overall and only with certain artists any sort of priority. It's good that producers and labels evolve reissuing plans and priorities and it's beneficial to collectors and fans when these change and further bits and pieces emerge. That's good for business too. I'm happier now that I have dispensed with some OCD aspects of my collecting and listening, and can certainly be patient to see more "rejected" or "unissued" material emerge.

Mccoy Tyner "Extensions" Blue Note cd, EMI Japan Here's the review (it's from allmusic.com originally). "Duke Pearson followed the conventions of the time and cut a smooth, commercially-oriented jazz album that made allusions to traditional and contemporary pop, hard bop, soul-jazz and bossa nova... Although the record is a pleasant artifact of its time, it's a rather sad, undistinguished way to close out Pearson's career." Reads like BS to me.

I just read the wiki article on "It Can Only Happen with You" and totally disagree with the review there. Too bad this was Duke's final album as he was one of the very finest American jazz musicians interpreting and arranging the then changing Brazilian music and I would have loved to see how that developed. He was far too young, we should have had many more years of his great work. Now something very different, Larry Young "Heaven on Earth" on a Blue Note 80th Anniversary reissue cd from Japan. I confess I disagree with the review quoted in the wiki article for this album as well. What a shame we lost Larry Young so early as well. He was an explorer!

Glad it made it . . . your check arrived yesterday as well. Right now, the second and perhaps best big band record from Duke Pearson "Now Hear This" Blue Note Japan TOCJ SHM-CD Followed by a real favorite, the Brazilian music album from Duke Pearson, "It Could Only Happen with You". . . excellent Flora Purim vocals. Oddly I did the opposite: I have listened to the cd but haven't read the liner notes. I just don't read liner notes with enthusiasm any longer. Sound on the studio sides is very good, improved in the realms of punch and midrange richness. Sound on the live material. . . I think the previous "Complete" cd may even sound a bit better for the live sides.

Thana Alexa "Ode to Heroes" . . .. This is a very nice debut album by a beautiful singer. Her voice and vocal nimbleness reminds me of Monday Michiru. I learned of her through C.J.'s Facebook page.
