  1. Helen Merill: "Carousel: the Music of Heikki Sarmonto"
  2. Loved seeing those cave paintings! Watching X-Files Season 5 on blu-ray. I've never seen this season before. X-Files looks and sounds so good on blu-ray!
  3. Yes, a dinner in Richfield Ohio, at the Richfield Taverne, about an hour from our house. The dinner was not bad. The second surprise was she chose that as she had seen a jazz band there about five years ago and there was a piano trio playing. They were three young guys, the pianist was quite good, the drummer was a rock drummer and the bassist did not have great time or chops. We sat through a set and went home. Lucy gets an A for effort and thinking of me enjoying a jazz performance.
  4. Thanks Brad!
  5. Thanks gentlemen. Now on to the next!
  6. Well that makes sense. I have little experience with NYC style delis. . . but do like some of those style sandwiches a lot. As one of my former partners would say "You and sandwiches! You never get tired of them!" She was like that with popcorn,
  7. That's the Italian influence. I like it myself, have always had it on subs. I grew up in Philadelphia where "hoagies" are sold. . . there was a neighborhood sub place that every now and then the last few years we were there I was tasked with going and getting hoagies for dinner, special occasion (boy did I grow up poor!) I would walk three or four blocks home and stick my nose in the bag and smell the herbs and the oil and vinegar they put on those excellent hoagies. That became a smell I loved and still do. In Austin the closest to those sandwiches of my youth I found were from a (chain I think) called Hog Island. Here in Chardon, Ohio the closest is the Jersey Mike's #13. . . but it's not as close or as good as the Hog Island "Old Italian." (I really miss food in Austin a LOT).
  8. Thanks Bill!
  9. Dinner is tonight. I don't know anything more about it than it's an hour away from home. I'm doing my best to pretend I like surprises.
  10. You're right. So I think it's time to start reducing the collections of books, cds and instruments as I won't be able to find or afford an ex-nuclear bunker for storage. Thanks SW, Larry and Joe.
  11. Happy Birthday Shawn!
  12. Thanks guys! A landmark year . . . I'm starting social security to supplement my meager retirement pension and hope to get a loan in the coming years to build on the property here. . .we need a garage and I'm hoping to add climate controlled storage so I can do away with my storage unit and have all my things with me. . . so I can start whittling down the collections. Had a great day mostly by myself listening to music and watching a movie, and today I'm being taken out to dinner by Lucy to a "mystery location." So it should be a great evening. Thanks for all the great birthday wishes! I'm so happy to share a birthday with Louis Armstrong and Barack Obama!
  13. This is on the Michael Cuscuna Facebook page: Intro Former President at Mosaic Records It looks to me as if Michael may no longer be the President and has a diminished role.
  14. This Blu-Spec CD2 again because I'm trying to figure out why "Don't Blame Me" is hitting me as a "masterpiece" this week. I guess it's the attitude--right from the start Sonny grabs you and starts telling the story and then Jim replies with his tale and . . .this is a great listen, and so well captured on tape.
  15. Happy Birthday Gates!
  16. The Blu-Spec CD2
  17. It has two extra tracks. One is the additional bit of ending (a climax of a sort) that was on the mono version but not the stereo version. That is placed on it's own track (less than 2 minutes long) at the end of the disc. The other is "The Other World," which is an alternate version of "The Shadow World" . . . and was previously released only on the third disc of the three disc version of "Heliocentric Worlds."
  18. Getting ready to celebrate Louis Armstrong's (and Barack Obama and Billy Bob Thornton's. . . and my own) birthday. Love this music; playing the SACD.
  19. The new remastered The Magic City sounds excellent.
  20. This is not in the Castro box. Released earlier on Fantasy. https://www.allaboutjazz.com/live-at-falcon-lair-zoot-sims-fantasy-jazz-review-by-jack-bowers.php
  21. Sun Ra, "The Magic City," the new remastered reissue from Mythic Sound. Sounds great.
  22. Most of what I read about these were in stereo magazine and from audiophiles; I got the impression that in some cases it was among the few jazz recordings known and in their collection. . . so they may have felt this was adventurous or ground-breaking with little context.
