  3. Jimmy Heath “Picture of Heath” Prevue cd
  4. Well, I was playing a few Bethlehem recordings because a package of new 2024 reissues of four Bethlehem titles was scheduled to arrive this afternoon and it just did. I was hoping these new remasterings didn’t sound better than the 2013 series that was released in Japan which has been my favored sonic versions, and. . . well they do sound a little better. Perhaps just a tiny bit less “loud” but more open sounding and dynamic by a bit. I’ll try not to buy more, but based on this playback of the first one (one of my favorite discs, period, in my listening history) it will be hard to resist not buying a few more of the titles I like the most. Charles Mingus “East Coasting” Bethlehem/Solid Records Japan cd (2024) Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone – Shafi Hadi Bass – Charles Mingus Drums – Dannie Richmond Piano – Bill Evans Trombone – Jimmy Knepper Trumpet – Clarence Shaw

  10. Thelonious Monk “The Columbia Years: '62-'68,” Columbia 3 cd set, disc 1 I couldn’t decide which Monk album to play today, and this seemed a good option. Nicely compiled, very nice sounding overview of the Columbia era.
  11. Dexter Gordon “The Complete Prestige Recordings” 11 cd set, disc 7 Following Lester Young with Dexter Gordon makes complete sense to me this morning.
  12. So sorry Dan. My Fiona the miniature dachshund is in her final months and I am savoring every moment with her.
  13. Watched one of Lucy’s great nephews in his high school basketball game last night. The team was strongly outmatched and it wasn’t much of a game but it was fun to be with the Texans visiting us. Sadly they are leaving to return to Austin today. I’ll miss them. . . those two kiddos are really something. Starting off with “The Complete Lester Young Studio Sessions On Verve” 8 cd set, disc 6 Lester breathily on clarinet for the first two tracks. Late Lester has its charm. And Harry “Sweets” Edison is a great front line companion here. 300×259 9.79 KB

  19. Starting off with the next to the last disc in the fantastic box set, “Classic Vanguard Small Group Swing Sessions” from Mosaic Records. 22. Barbara Lea & The Ed Polcer All Stars “At the Atlanta Jazz Party” Jazzology cd
  23. Lately my old dachshund has let me sleep in a bit later which is welcome. It’s still warm here, which seems odd but welcome. I re-listened to six tracks of the Chet Baker cd “Late Night Jazz”–each track sounds so good, each so succinct and involving. Now onto a disc that arrived yesterday, Renee Rosnes “Crossing Paths” Smoke Sessions cd. . . .A very tightly arranged Brazilian jazz fusion. Like her recent releases excellent sound and playing. Includes several of my favorite singers from Brazil, Edu Lobo, Maucha Adnet and Joyce. I’ll be spinning this one often I think.
