Ha. . . just my Apple laptop's "Photo Booth" at work. Only camera I have that I can post pictures from.

At the moment the cd version of this seems only available in Japan, but I had to have a copy so I ordered one and it arrived yesterday. Would have been prohibitively expensive, but I had a lot of points with cdjapan which defrayed the cost. Joel Ross is on board, one reason that I ordered but I do have almost all of Hill’s previous releases and enjoy the musical journeys he leads one on. Our survivor of a dogwood tree (about six years ago a windstorm broke off the top half which used to crown beautifully in front of our bedroom window) last night with snow and the lights that illuminate the deck stairs shining brightly.

Yesterday I was able to crank the audio/video system and listen to and watch the Wynona Judd "Austin City Limits" episode. What a band she and her husband had, and how polished and controlled the performance. Great great audio as well.

Carmen McRae “Carmen McRae Alone: As Time Goes by / Live At The Dug” JVC XRCD24 Listening to this one again. It was worth the wait. As an XRCD24 the mastering is just right, and the performance is as intimate as you can get. I really enjoy these women jazz vocalists who can play and sing. . . and especially when in Carmen’s case she is so little recorded at the piano, this one is a real treat. I’m glad I saved this for a treat when I’ve come to really love Carmen.

This was one of the only Carmen McRae I have not purchased . . . a sort of grail recording that I preferred to remain in the field to capture at some opportune time in the future. That time arrived last week when I saw this available pristine at the original price on release and I went for it. Arrived this afternoon and the wait was worth it. Miles Davis “1958 Miles” Sony Blu-Spec CD2 One of my versions of this session that is much talked about at the moment as an LP and SACD are forthcoming from Analogue Productions. My beef with this new reissue is they are casting it as a “warmup to Kind of Blue.” Um, no it’s not. I’ll get the SACD eventually when I can find it without paying 10 dollars shipping, further on down the road. It’s fantastic music and this cd sounds really good–as does the mono version in the Mono Albums box set. 500×500 45.6 KB

Re-listening to the second half of this one again this cool morning. Fiona the dachshund and I were battling wills this morning. She wanted up way too early, and I managed to get her to go back to sleep twice. . . but lost this third time. I could use more sleep–going to have to make up for that later. I think as far as Vanguard goes only a piano centered Vanguard set is planned yet to come. A big band V-Disk box has been mentioned. . . I think that rather than a big band Vanguard is what we'll have forthcoming.

Maybe they offered several plans to Concord and a more expansive one was not accepted. I would say that this one makes sense cohesively to me. I probably have all the likely material to be included in the piano-centric set, but it will be great to have them all in session order and annotated in Mosaic fashion. Looks likely to be a good release for next year.

Gerald Cannon “Combinations” Woodneck cd Edit to add: this is a really good cd. Cannon reminds me of Mingus in his tone and playing, and his arranging and directing draws one in. It took me a while but I realize what makes her singing unique for me is a subtle element of Nigerian phrasing. Listening to his "Combinations" so looked up a photo, found this nice one. William Cannon, bassist
