  1. Just finishing up this one. The precision of the unison playing between Raney and the horns is astonishing and so well captured (in mono). "Jimmy Raney in Three Attitudes, "Fresh Sound cd [IMG]634×640 63.7 KB Reissues these: [IMG]500×500 49.5 KB Followed by Grant Green “Blues for Lou” Blue Note cd Grant Green, Big John Patton, Ben Dixon
  2. A beautiful album from “Orquestra Popular de Câmara” on Adventure Music. The sound is wonderful and the arrangements and performances not your typical Brazilian but something new. As soon as you hear the tabla you know you’re in for something atypical. I’ll have to seek out their second album. This one has st on the shelves a long time and I’m glad I am revisiting it today.
  3. I had a part of a dream last night that I was looking for a Blossom Dearie record. Well I have a few, more on cd, and decided to listen to this one. 498×500 21 KB A nice one with full orchestra from 1964, originally a Capitol LP, on cd from the US on her own Daffodill Records (manufacutred by Capitol Special Products) and later a Capitol cd, and from TOCJ Japan a few times.
  4. Finally listening to the final disc of this box. What a great set. One could wish that the last two discs sounded a bit better, but if wishes were horses there would be dung everywhere.
  5. I think the Mel Powell sessions will make the second set. . . I would hope so. . . fabulous music.
  6. I pre-ordered without hesitation--I have much of this material, it is all well-recorded and excellent performances. Looking forward to the piano-centric Vanguard set in the future.

  8. Gary Bartz “The Shadow Do” Prestige Japan cd 250×250 18.7 KB Starting off a relatively warm morning with the humor and light funk of this Bartz album. Alto Saxophone, Soprano Saxophone, Synthesizer, Lead Vocals, Backing Vocals, Co-producer– Gary Bartz Bass, Backing Vocals – Michael Henderson Congas, Percussion – Mtume Drums, Synthesizer – Howard King Guitar – Reggie Lucas Piano, Clavinet, Synthesizer – Hubert Eaves* Producer, Backing Vocals – Larry and Fonce Mizell Synthesizer, Backing Vocals – Larry Mizell The Mizell Bros production is dominant, but Bartz’s stamp is heavily here as well. From 1975
  9. Sonny Stitt “Constellation” Camden 2 cd set disc 2
  10. Lonnie Smith “Keep on Lovin’” Groove Merchant/Solid Records Japan cd
  11. This one again. It's really good!
  12. John Hicks Trio “Impressions of Mary Lou” HighNote cd John Hicks - piano Dwayne Dolphin - bass Cecil Brooks III - drums 498×500 31.9 KB I love how he sneaks that bass line from “Isn’t it About that Time” into the end of the first track.
  13. Re-listeing to disc 5 of this new box set. In part because it is one of the parts of this box set I did not have before, and in part because I just don’t want to get to the end of this set so am saving disc 6 for . . . probably tomorrow.
  14. Another cool and damp morning. We’re finally getting typical November weather, though I think we’ll have a few warmer and sunnier days starting tomorrow. I love the quiet and peaceful vibe of this time of morning outside. Started off with a re-spin of some of the Garland at the Prelude disc 1 then saw Ron Carter talking about Stanley Turrentine’s “Sugar” on Facebook and decided to spin this “CITI-RVG” cd version from King Records Japan. What a great session with Freddie Hubbard and George Benson and Ron Carter.
  15. The Japanese have reissued these dates on cd more than once. I don't think that is a reason the US Blue Note hasn't; in general the expansive reissue objective we saw at the time of "Doubletime" just can't or won't exist today.
  16. 600×600 114 KB “The Red Garland Trio at the Prelude” Complete, 2 cd, Prestige Records, disc 1 Red Garland - piano Jimmy Rowser - bass Charles “Specs” Wright - drums
  17. Jackie McLean “Jackie’s Bag” Blue Note Japan RVG SHM-CD On to something else. . . hard bop and one of the appearances of the “gone too soon” Tina Brooks. The opening track, “Quadrangle,” seems an early response to the Ornette Coleman Quartet with some wonderful drumming from Philly Joe Jones.
  18. Linda Keene “The Dixie Songbird’s Complete Recordings” Fresh Sound 2 cd set, disc 1
  19. Another fascinating Bill Evans release. Seems a good fit for this cold rainy (very soggy) morning. “The Bill Evans Album” Sony Blu-Spec CD2 170×170 6.67 KB This originally released 1971 album featured four new Evans compositions, and was the first album to feature only his compositions. With Eddie Gomez and Marty Morell.
  20. “Bill Evans Piano Player” Sony Blu-Spec CD2 300×298 7.02 KB Great sounding cd.
  21. Bennie Green “Back on the Scene” Blue Note RVG Japan SHM-CD 2024 500×499 72.4 KB Love Bennie Green’s albums! Bennie Green – trombone Charlie Rouse – tenor saxophone Joe Knight – piano George Tucker – bass Louis Hayes – drums
  22. Melissa Aldana “12 Stars” Blue Note cd 300×293 8.09 KB
  23. That was really good. But. . . I don't necessarily assume the music is "out there." Or perhaps more clearly that they are "available." There I am sure are many things of all types I would like to hear that just aren't able to be licensed and released fro many reasons. There is so much of so many artists that are available to listen to that I will spend the rest of my life looking for and listening to that. . . well it would be great for a box set of Carter material but if it doesn't appear I'll be fine. I love that woman's work. I'll listen to what I do have, which I think is all the official, over and over.
