Coincidentally, I just started listening to Resonance's Nat King Cole box. This box includes some tracks from Jubilee shows. No mention is made of any complications regarding their use, or of needing approval from the government. Indeed, the credits mention "Episode #29 of AFRS Jubilee is newly transferred by United States Library of Congress." Maybe the government simply doesn't care anymore. The box was produced with permission of the Cole estate.

I'll be interested to read the Mosaic books. I do know that, while the Jubilee shows presented themselves as "live," much of the musical material was recorded in the studio beforehand.

Vanguard was a label: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanguard_Records. Their masters are currently owned by Concord. Per the original post, Mosaic is planning to release two boxes of Vanguard jazz: one of small groups, and one of pianists. Mosaic is also planning to release two other boxes of V-Disc recordings: one of small groups, and one of big bands. These would indeed be recordings from the 40s and 50s. Nothing from the Village Vanguard. I hope this helps.

I have sympathy for him. His gatekeeping is probably a way to cut down on theft (gingerly alluded to in the paragraph that begins "The day that I visit Chase’s shop to interview him..."). It sounds like, when he asks “Need any assistance?”, all you need to say is "I'm looking for some jazz," and he'll steer you to the jazz area. There's no requirements to buy, and you can still look at the condition of the records (though there's no mention of how competitive his pricing is). He sounds like an ornery old guy; retail will do that to you.

I didn't realize there was a series. I have this:

A lot of the performances on the Jubilee shows aren't special in and of themselves - the established bands' tracks sound very similar to their original versions. Of more interest are bands whose official recordings weren't easily available. For example, Wilbert Baranco makes a few appearances on these Jubilee shows, but I first heard his original recordings on Mosaic's Black & White box. I've listened to quite a few of the original Jubilee shows, and a lot of them are a tough slog to find the few items of interest: you get a lot of Ernie "Bubbles" Whitman, interviews, vocal groups, girl singers and the like. I think it's much better to get a curated version. Hindsight did put out a good box in 1998; they selected excellent tracks and used judicious EQ to make them more listenable:

I think with Cuscuna's demise (may he rest in peace) and Scott's elevation, we'll see more pre-bop Mosaic releases. I think that era is Scott's first love.

I had a similar experience in Stamford, Connecticut. We lived in a hilly, wooded area, with only 7 houses on the circuit. There were power outages all the time: in the winter (ice and snowstorms), spring and summer (nor'easters), and it took forever for the power company to restore our power. I couldn't assail their logic. So I installed a generator in that house; because there were no underground gas lines there, I also had to install a propane tank. The generator is noisy and smelly, but there's nothing like it for peace of mind. Fortunately, when we moved to Houston, the house came with an installed generator, which the prior owners installed after Hurricane Ike in 2008.

We’re more fortunate than most, because our house came with an auxiliary generator, so I really can’t complain. We were able to live in our house (no mean feat with temps in the 90’s every day) and our food didn’t spoil. But being without internet opened my eyes to how much we rely on it these days.

This pretty much says it all. I have the Archeophone release, which we were told were speed-corrected and in the best possible fidelity. That would leave two discs and a book for $100. I can wait for someone to give it to me as a gift (which probably won't happen).
